Staff Review

Randy Yard:
The third-place winner in BiM 2010, A.'s "no title 17" is a film that doesn't neatly fit into any predefined genre. CG animation, a repetitive computer-generated soundtrack and a completely immobile camera all call to mind an old-school video game, but there's more to it than that; telling a simple but entertaining story using only speech bubbles and the most basic of LEGO elements, this short is both a cartoon and an abstraction without really being either. It's worth noting that it wouldn't be nearly as effective if even the smallest of changes was made; using more words, sound effects, minifigures instead of bricks, etc. would all detract greatly from the experience, and the way that A. completely nailed what his film needed is perhaps its most admirable feature. Unique without being especially groundbreaking, this short neatly bridges the gap between silent films and the non-objective, resulting in a surprisingly accessible two-minute viewing experience certainly worthy of your time.
