Staff Review

Randy Yard:
Viewers who speak German will get far more out of this film than those who do not, as there is virtually no action in the film with the notable exception of one brief fight scene. The story is instead told almost exclusively through dialogue, leaving the film decidedly inaccessible for English-speaking viewers. Another issue is the animation; the directors state that they had never done stop-motion before, and though it's certainly adequate, the lack of experience shows. That said, there are plenty of enjoyable facets for those who don't understand what's going on... the image quality is quite good and many of the shots are quite clever, sets are impressive, and little animations here and there, such as a waterfall and a man falling off a pier, are tackled in unique and surprisingly effective ways. If you speak the language, this film is a no-brainer, but even those on whom the story will be lost should have no problem sitting through the film's 12-minute running time.
