General Film Discussion

Sen-talk-tys: So I was watching a lot of reviews and stuff & that got me wondering. What's the best use of foreshadowing you've ever seen in a piece of animation? Brickfilm or not?

I'll put mine first, Gravity Falls season 1. Everything on how it's handles is just pure genius, from how it manages to recontextualize certain gags into dramatic & even heartbreaking scenes (like wax Stan's statute) to how is gradually builds up (like Stand's handwriting not matching the deed). To how it leads to him hiding a grand event without it being the main twist (the ending of "Gideon Rises"). And even how it leads other hints of more basic foreshadowing along the way to keep the viewer on their toes. I've seen good & even great use of foreshadowing before, but I don't think anything ever like this before,& I hope one day to be as great as a writer as the people working on this show.

This is the place here on BiM to discuss Gravity Falls, a fairly new Disney cartoon.
Some people have said that Disney channel cartoons aren't that good, but this one is much better (many will agree).

The Main Characters:

I don't think anyone is going to object to this thread, so we might as well start it up now.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
I got this on DVD for Christmas, and I still enjoy it, even though I've seen it several times already. All the actors play their parts perfectly; even though some of the special effects seem a bit fake, they blend in well with the film, giving it the older film feel that I love, and even make it seem more authentic then today's films at some parts.

Now I want to get the rest of the films, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but where will I get the money?

We don't discuss enough bad movies in this forum, which I find odd beacause one can usually get a pretty interesting/funny conversation going on the subject.
Well I like the idea.
So...

Alien vs Hunter
A shoddy, straight-to-DVD ripoff of Alien vs Predator made to cash in on the release of the AvP: Requiem DVD. It almost goes without saying that it was done by The Asylum. My friend accidentally bought it, so we watched it, and it was just so bad. The dialogue was obviously made up on the spot by actors who couldn't make up dialogue very well. The plot didn't make sense and the 'twist' at the end made even less sense. I mean that's gotta be the second worst movie ending I have ever seen (Skyline's is still at #1). Awful movie, but there were moments that were "so-bad-it's-good", but overall it was just stupid.

Energy Troopers: Indiegogo Campaign

Hello. I'm running an indiegogo for a proof of concept anime short film!
Link to campaign: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/energy-troopers-anime-short-film/x/936767#/

A basic synopsis of the project is: "The Energy Troopers, a team of young adult superheroes must come together to defeat Scarlett Delacroix and her fellow acolytes from obtaining a great power that could end all life on earth."

I wrote a feature film treatment as I envisioned this as a feature, but I'm looking for funding of a Proof of Concept short. Making a short film is a way for to tackle the story creatively in a different format while showcasing the potential of what could be. The script for the short had been written, showcasing the main 6 characters, the tone of humor and action, with great performances from the cast. Concepts have been designed, the script has been storyboarded, and an animatic has been created. Funding is strictly for the animators and the film festival run.

Special Thanks Credit
Advance digital copy of the short film
Director's commentary
Storyboards/Animatics
Concept Art
BTS documentary highlighting actor recording sessions
Exclusive poster designs/computer wallpaper
Soundtrack
Producer credit

I'll describe what I remember. I used to watch this series on a website called Kidstube.com.

It was mainly sound effects/music and the dialogue was just subtitled; no audible voices for any of the characters. I remember one scene where Dr. Curt Connors is teaching the class. The series was probably about 5 episodes? I remember it being decent.
Yellow heads. Ring a bell? I'd love to see it again.

The Brickfilm Archival Project

Fellow brickfilmers, I am happy to present my latest endeavour, the Brickfilms Archival Project.

For years and years, brickfilming has spread all over the internet and around the world. The brickfilming community has grown and produced hours of fun, artistic, entertaining and enjoyable brickfilms. However, as the years have gone by, past generations of brickfilmers have faded, or moved on, or completely disappeared. Luckily, most of their films have survived, but they are scattered across the internet. Before YouTube, brickfilms were hosted privately, on individual servers, tucked into personal websites. But personal websites disappear, servers go down, data gets deleted. Even YouTube videos get removed.

It is important that these brickfilms are not lost. Brickfilming may be a niche within a niche within a niche, but we are significant. We’ve been featured in newspapers, magazines, television shows, prominent news sites, even been hired by the LEGO company to promote the little plastic blocks we all love. Brickfilms get hundreds of thousands, even in some cases millions, of views on YouTube. And even the look and feel of The LEGO Movie was influenced by brickfilms. We can’t afford to lose these even one of these brickfilms.

This is why, a few months ago, I started the Brickfilms Archival Project. The Brickfilms Archival Project’s mission is to seek out the greatest, most interesting, most important brickfilms of all time, catalog them, preserve them, restore them if necessary, and share them with the world. Now I need your help.

You can check out the current catalog here. As you can see, I’ve made some progress, but I still have a long way to go. This is where you can help!

You can suggest films that should be archived here. This post will have all of the info you need to learn more about the project, and how you can contribute. Feedback and input are welcome.

Long Animation Hiatuses

It has been a long time since I was working on my last brickfilm, or on any form of animation. When I was animating last, I could tell that I was getting rusty, as it took me a long time to make my minifig movements look as smooth as I'd like them to be. By the look of things, it is going to continue to be a long time before I put bricks in front of a camera again. My 'animation studio' (AKA the spare room) has recently been used for storage, then a guest bedroom, then a storage room again, and now it's being kept available for one of my younger siblings to revise in for his upcoming exams. I simply do not have the time or space to animate anymore. :(
As time goes by, I'm getting more and more anxious that I'm going to either be really rusty and out of practise by the time I try to brickfilm again, or at this rate perhaps simply cease to be a brickfilmer for good.
I suppose the point of my self pitying ramble, my patient readers, is to ask for advice on what to do during long hiatuses between brickfilms. Are there things that anyone would recommend or advise to keep myself from getting rusty?
Thanks.

Classic Space Film

Hello everyone

My name is Ben Smith and I am a filmmaker from Bristol in the UK. In my day job I am the creative director of animation studio Red Star www.redstar3D.com. We're currently working on an animated movie based on the Terry Pratchett novel THE AMAZING MAURICE and I am also the writer/director of the studio's first movie STARDOG AND TURBOCAT.

I am also a LEGO fan and build my own MOCs which you can see at flickr.com/threeDadventures. As a child of the 80s I am also a huge fan of the Classic Space theme and some time I have been thinking of making a film which is "a love letter to classic space" However, my assumption is that I would aim to raise the budget via crowdfunding on e.g. Kickstarter, and I am imagining this will probably be several tens of thousands of dollars.

Given this, I was hoping people on this forum could advise me on dealing with the LEGO group on projects like this. The internet is awash with brickfilms; but it seems like when you aim to raise money to finance them and intend to use LEGO's trademarks (e.g. the classic space logo) you must have to be diligent about that or risk LEGO shutting the project down or worse.

Does anyone here have experience of these issues?

Many thanks

/ben
