Topic: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

It's been a while since I've made a film, a (I think it's been at least two years) about a year ago I started making a musical about an evil scientist who wanted to steal hair from the dead because he was balding, but do it ended up becoming a living toupee and terrorizing the village, sadly this project fell through because I moved to Seattle and the guy doing my music stayed in Moses Lake. I remember trying to do some more stuff down the road only to discover my field recorder stopped working, which really killed any motivation I had.

After nearly a year of living in Seattle I was pretty settled in and not having some kind of project going had really been bothering me, so I went to B&H and started looking at field recorders. I ended up getting a recorder that hooks into my iPod and this shotgun mic. The new audio equiptment is so much better then the old M-Audio recorder and Shure SM57 I was using before.

On my only day off a few weeks back I sat down and wrote a script for a new LEGO film, and I'm really excited about it. I remember after I had finished writing it one of my room mates came home and I let her read it and she was laughing through the entire script. I built the set for the opening establishing shot but realized my light gels had been lost in all the moving. I can't properly function without gels, I figured I could bike out to my bike shop and ask the mechanic Niki (the only local photographer I know, check out her stuff) where I could get some gels locally. It turns out she was interested in the film and is interested in helping me, so I may do some animation (or at least set building and lighting) with her. She also pointed me to Glazer's Camera Supply which had everything I needed.

You may have already seen the opening shot:

I was able to bribe some voice actors with beer and we all had an absolute blast recording the bulk of the films audio. For the record the film has three scientists, two of which are played by real scientists

I later edited down the recording sessions and built the first set that would actually contain animation. I needed a very complex lighting set up with animated lighting effects and the whole setup was lousy for animation but the visuals turned out pretty awesome. It took me the better part of two days just to set up the shot and another two days to animate the scene (two shots, a total of 27 seconds) I didn't have a frame grabber and was shooting blind, but I only had to redo one of the shots. This is the nightmare I had to sit in as I animated, I sat on the orange lid that was on top of a paint can.

Here are the lighting tests I did for the scene, took a little while to figure out how it would work

Looks epic. Can't wait.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Despite having a room dedicated to LEGO in my house it's not set up well, also my animation setup is currently pretty bad, so I decided to build a work table I can animate at (or just use as a work bench) and some tables for the LEGO room so its easer to build stuff. I borrowed my brothers car with some plans for the tables and drove to the hardware store. It was the first time I had driven a car in months. I picked up what I needed and got them to cut most of the stuff I couldn't cut at home, however when I brought them out to the car things got tricky. It was an economy car and was not really build for hauling things, but I was able to attach every thing to the car in a rather sketchy manner using string. Remember: Safety Third! I took back roads home with my hazard lights on only going around 25mph. I should be able to build a good animation space tomorrow.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

One of the problems with the way I recorded my dialog for this film is it takes a lot longer to edit then in my old films, however having multiple actors recording dialog at the same time makes it a lot more dynamic and having the recorder just rolling the whole time means you never need to worry about missing that great take. It does leave you with chunks of audio that range from 5 to 20 minuets, sometimes even when the scene is only 5 seconds long. I spent quite a bit of time editing down the audio for the next shot which looks like its around 15 seconds long, I also got started on the set, I'm pleased with how it is coming. Hopefuly I can shoot this scene on Saturday.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

This looks amazing.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Looks lovely, can't wait. =P

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

For the record this film does not have Batman or Jar Jar in it, I may find a way to work in the robot though. Every set seems to have turned into a huge display of excess, I'm probably going to start regretting that real soon.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

I'm really looking forward to this. It could become my new favorite brickfilm, and that would be awesome.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Well so long as your not looking for serious storylines or CGI backgrounds you should find this quite delightful.

I'm not. Just because that's the style of film I tend to lean towards when making my own films doesn't mean I can't like a good humor brickfilm. mini/wink  In fact, usually my favorite brickfilms are filled with slapstick comedy and stuff that makes me laugh almost the whole way through.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Agreed. There's something of a classic feel to it, and the lighting reminds me of Twelve Bucks. Really looking forward to it, there's some great projects coming here in the community, and I will be happily looking forward to this.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

I am definitely looking forward to this. True Love Waits was one of my favorites.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Was that set inspired by the "Dr: Strangelove"'s War Room? Anyway, the movie looks awesome. I'm definitley looking forward to it.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

If by inspired you mean outright stole, then yes, yes it was. I had a little trouble figuring out how to make a round table but I think it turned out well, and it's not held together by sticky tack which I thought I might have to do.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

After setting up the lighting for the next shot I was having a little trouble with the set, after a bit of investigation I discovered my lights were warping my LEGO bricks:

Melted LEGO

Because I really liked the way the lighting looked I decided to build a shield of Megablocks covering the LEGO that was closes to the light, I had two shots to animate on this set for a total of 25 seconds of animation. After the animation was done the Megablocks were shot:

However, in the end I think it was worth it:

My movie is now 58 seconds long!

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

The best thing to melt! mini/wink Looks like a great project.

Re: Interdimensional Adventures (working title)

Some great lighting, I'll have to try some of these techniques one day. How long do you expect this film to be?
