Re: Photography

The shape of the bokeh is a result of the shape of the opening through the aperture blades, so the most legit way to get hexagonal bokeh is to use a lens that has 6 aperture blades, ideally not rounded. There are ways to cheat it, though. Since the bokeh resembles the shape of the hole through which the light is traveling, you just need to change the shape of the hole. Theoretically if you put a piece of paper in front of the lens that has a hexagonal opening in it, you should get hexagonal bokeh; there are even kits you can buy that let you do all kinds of crazy shapes this way. Keep in mind, though, that it's going to do all kinds of crazy things to framing and exposure, so you'll have to mess around with it a lot.

Those are beautiful, Jayem.  The only thing a bit off is that the depth of focus in the first picture is a bit shallow, in my opinion.  Aside from that, wonderful.  Love the clouds.

Thanks. Yeah, I've gotten one other comment about the DoF there. I was going for a kind of tilt-shift effect, but I guess it didn't come off. Thanks for the advice.

This is very true. My photographs look nice, but there wasn't a huge amount of skill involved in taking them- the countryside is very photogenic. Urban photography is probably more impressive technically, in some cases.

Re: Photography

After all of Smeagol's (and others') praise of certain old Russian lenses, I went and bought myself a Mir-1 37mm f/2.8. It's a really slow lens to operate, but it has a really nice aesthetic, and is really good for certain applications. I don't think I'll ever use another lens to take pictures of flowers (because those are so interesting mini/tongue ). It renders greens and warm colors really nicely, but struggles a bit with blues and other cool colors, and flares massively into the sun. Despite these fairly significant flaws, as a specialty art lens, it works wonders for the $50 I paid.

I really want to try using it for portraiture, I've seen some great success with it online, and I can't wait to pair it with some extension tubes, the bokeh this thing makes should produce some stellar macro shots. 10 rounded aperture blades is usually something you have to pay huge money for. Seriously guys, after spending a few hours with it, I can say that buying one of these things is totally worth it. They're cheap, fun to use, and in the right situations are definitely capable of producing some stellar images. No good for brickfilming though, the minimum focusing distance is absurdly long (0.7m).

Re: Photography

I think photographers (and even some filmmakers) are getting lazy with today's new AF lenses. AF is great, but I always get inspired from photographers back in the day when there were no autofocus lenses. Like I said, AF is nice, but I try to stay away from it as much as possible. I always enjoy photographers getting into manual focus and aperture with their lenses. I wish more photographers had manual lenses.

I can imagine. I have the Helios 44-2 58mm lens, and it is a lot easier. But with a 37mm, that's got to be impossible. Maybe extension tubes will help you.

I agree. I tried taking family portraits last summer with an autofocus lens, and it would focus on the eyes like it was supposed to, so my family pictures didn't come out well. mini/sad Though, it is very hard go focus things with a manual, unless you have the hang of it. The results of manual focus, are extremely rewarding if you can get your subjects from getting tired of standing in front of the camera while you focus. mini/tongue

Re: Photography

I think a lot of laziness comes not from auto focus,  but from an over use of zoom lenses. Photographing people with manual focus is hard, I've done it and I've got some good results, but I felt that I was so focused on getting my shots in focus that my framing suffered as a result. The problem I have with zoom lenses is people are more likely to stand from the same place and just zoom in and out so they can get everything in frame even if the framing is not perfect, with a prime lens you are already in a fixed focal length mindset and you expet to move around more to get the shot you want.

I would really love a couple auto focus primes, maybe Canon's 40mm f/2.8 and the 85mm f/1.8, I would have a lot more fun photographing people with those vs my manual 50mm f/1.8 or my 18-55mm kit lens.

Thanks for the advice.  If I understand correctly you can put a piece of paper with the desired shape of hole in between the lens and camera body to get that effect?

Re: Photography

Yes, that should work too, and with less of a loss of light. I'm not sure how you would manage that without some really sketchy lens whacking, unless you can find an actual piece of equipment for the purpose.

Re: Photography

There's some really nice stuff in there, you have a good eye for composition. I'm not sure what you've got as far as a photo editor, I know you don't have Photoshop, but you should really level out those images that are on an angle. The only thing keeping most of those from being really nice photos is that their awkwardly cocked to the side, which is clearly a simple user error as opposed to a creative choice (the third and fourth ones down being the most severe). If you don't have a decent piece of editing software that has this feature, I'd suggest Lightroom. If you're a student, which I'm assuming you are, it's barely more than Photoshop elements and has all the tools you could possibly need for lighting and color post processing for photography, I use it for paid work.

Ah yeah, I see what you mean--glad you pointed it out.  I do have GIMP so I can easily correct that (I think you can even edit that in Windows Photo Viewer).  It was basically my first time using a DSLR for anything other than Brickfilming, and I think I'm generally unused to the weight and size of such a camera. Good to know for future reference, I'll definitely keep this in mind when shooting on the street (or wherever) again.  I'm glad you like the composition; it was the main thing I wanted to accomplish--I was mainly interested to see how the subject filled the frame (plus just generally getting to know my camera better and gaining experience; I've been told that if one has an interest in cinematography they should definitely pursue photography as they're basically the same in many respects).

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, this is probably my personal favourite, composition-wise:
