Re: The Animation Challenge

Well, I don't really feel qualified to judge or critique these, but here goes,

And the winner is ..... 1999mrlegoman mini/smile
I liked the way you used different color and shaped bricks for the sand, the video seemed a little dark, and I felt like there should have been a shot looking up out of the hole at the minifigs face, but over all, good job!

Rivvm M, I liked your movements, they felt smooth and natural, but I feel you put to much time into matching my description mini/smile  (it was just supposed to be suggestions) and not enough into the animation,  over all though, good job as well

Thank you, and congratulations to all who entered,
1999mrlegoman I guess you pick the next chalenge, have fun!

Re: The Animation Challenge

Congratulations 1999mrlegoman! Well deserved win.

Thanks MarkNelsonMovies, it was fun and got me animating something, so I would call it a success. mini/smile I completely agree with your judgement. Also, an added benefit is now I get to enter this next one as well!

I finished mine: https://youtu.be/cbGQedJZduk
My animating table is extremely cluttered right now, so it is a bit shaky and has some light flicker, but not too much.

It has some set bumps and light flicker, and the masking isn't the best, but it was fun to make. mini/smile

Re: The Animation Challenge

Congratulations Pongowl, you are this weeks winner! mini/delirium
The "Magic Toss" segment was amazing, and the panda plane was also well done if a bit fast. However, I honestly had no idea what was going on in the fishing part.

Rivvm M- I loved the shrinking effect, and the "stroll" segment was really cool too.  The only thing I would say is not to shift the focus to the background, it became obvious then that it was only a miniature.

N0odlebrick- Your entry was quite well animated, but a bit simplistic.  There wasn't anything bad about it, but there was nothing to make it stand out from all the other excellent entries.

MarkNelsonMovies- You did a nice job matching the movements of the minifigs with the snowman's head, but the set bumps kind of broke the illusion.

Anyway, great job to all who entered, this was a tough contest to judge!

Re: The Animation Challenge

Thank you everyone, I really enjoyed entering. I appreciate the support from everyone and the work that 1999mrlegoman put in to run this week's challenge.

For next week's challenge, I already got "animating non-artiulate characters" as a suggestion and I think it's a good theme, but if anyone else has some theme ideas, then I would appreciate hearing those as well. mini/wink

Re: The Animation Challenge

as in big figs? or even more non articulate?

Re: The Animation Challenge

Walking cycles of the short minifigure legs. You should do that.

Re: The Animation Challenge

Alright everyone, thanks for the suggestions. Here's what this week's challenge is going to be:

Theme: Animating non-articulate characters
Deadline: Monday, February 15 (Presidents' Day)

This can be anything that does not have joints in it. For example, the dog, fish, or mouse LEGO elements that are all one piece, or even a brick build that doesn't have any articulation. You can also animate with the horses, bigfigs, or even the short minifig legs, as long as the focus in on the inarticulate part and trying to animate that.

I hope I have clearly explained the theme here, but if there are any questions on that or anything else than please let me know. Good luck everyone mini/wink

Re: The Animation Challenge

Wow, thank you MarkNelsonMovies. I triple checked my calendar to make sure that I had the date right, but apparently I was looking at a 2015 calendar, on which the 16th is a monday. mini/blankexpression

Sorry about that. I have edited the original post to say the correct date now. So to be clear, the deadline is Monday, February 15, 2016.

Again, sorry about that everyone. mini/smile

Here is my entry!

I've only got a little bit of space LEGO and some white paper, but I still wanted to enter. I don't have any dogs or cat figures unfortunately, so I had to make due with what I had.

Here is my entry

I tried two different figures, a horse and a seagull,
I'm not sure if there is a standard walk cycle for horses, but I tried to get something that looked sort of like a trot.
I tried to improve the set stability over last time, but the floor under my tripod flexed a little so there are some camera bumps.

Also, after seeing "Egyptian Holiday" BTS I though I would try to make a more realistic sky, so I tried to simulate a sunset.

Re: The Animation Challenge

Ok everyone, I guess it's time to announce the winner.

Geouug, looks like you're the winner! mini/sunnies The bot that you built bounced around very well, though it appeared to jerk around a tad too abruptly at the start. Overall, your entry was really well done.

MarkNelsonMovies, your entry was great as well, the horse was animated well. I wouldn't know from experience, but perhaps adding more hop to it's trot would make it appear more lifelike. The seagull was alright, but could benefit from some side to side motion so that it doesn't look quite so flat.

1999mrlegoman, your first animation is really good, though not exactly what the theme entailed. I believe that would fall under the category of replacement animation. The latter few animations with the animals did fit with the theme, and they were also very good, though they might also benefit from more upward motion, like I said to MarkNelsonMovies above.

Thank you all for entering, I'm not a pro animator myself so it's sorta tricky to give useful advice, but hopefully I've been able to help you guys out a bit! Also special thanks to MarkNelsonMovies for correcting my mistake about the deadline earlier and Rioforce for helping come up with ideas for the theme. mini/smile
