Re: Holding Our Own: Episode 4 Production Log

Today I am working on a Johnny Strange animation sequence.  The good part is there's no dialogue to sync up.  Well, there is one line: his famous line whenever he enters the Schneider home.  The not-so-good part is that it's a lot of frames for a small bit of animation.  With dialogue, I am able to recycle short bits of movements.

Also, Thanks to William Osborne, creator of App Man, I have what I call the Holding Our Own Pseudo-Wiki.  Wikia, or Fandom, or whatever it is calling itself these days, forbids Wikia wiki pages to contain the word "Holding", Believe it or not.  Thus, no "Holding Our Own" wiki.  I tried under other names but have had hassles.  I tried other wiki pages but I don't like them.  So I went outside the box and made a message board, much like Bricks In Motion.com.

There are categorized entries to read.  So far, only two categories exist; characters end episodes.  The episode category only contains "stubs" for now.  The site will be more fully elaborated upon later, but many regular and semi-regular characters now have entries.  I started this a while back, but was inspired to actually begin maintaining it after being introduced to William Osborne's App Man Wikia.

most of the text come from the Holding Our Own character reference, a personal file I keep to maintain continuity.  Other information will come from another private document, the HOO Continuity Guide, which I maintain for the same reason.  For now, you can read the character profiles, including previews of Missy's friends, at http://holdingourown.proboards.com

Re: Holding Our Own: Episode 4 Production Log

I finished Johnny Strange's song for the episode.  Brandon fields (DarthVincentPrice on BiM) really delivered on the song this time, pucshing his vocal chords to the limit.  He deserves every viewer's appreciation for this one.  This brings post-production at the 50% mark!  I hope to release a sneak preview soon...

Great to hear it, the songs are my favorite part!

Re: Holding Our Own: Episode 4 Production Log

Well, thanks!  I enjoy writing the Johnny songs.  My brother is a signed punk rock artist, and many punk rockers have "noun-adjective" nicknames.  (Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Joe Queer, etc.)  We've had many interesting and colorful characters, literally and figuratively, at our dinner table, hailing from all parts of the USA.  Anyway, one of the musicians we know goes by the name "Jimmy Odd".  That is the inspiration for Johnny Strange's name.

Re: Holding Our Own: Episode 4 Production Log

Suddenly, the animation has taken a brisk pace, and I'm trying to maintain this pace.  Currently, I'm animating a music montage that appears in HOO 4.  I consider it one of the funniest parts of the episode.  I recently wrote about it on IRC:

I'm animating the music montage video segment of HOO 4 right now!  Except for some lighting consistency problems in a few basement scenes, it's coming out better and funnier than I though it would!  I'm really happy with this, and I've been doing a lot of progress in a short time.

The second half of the episode has some focus problems not apparent in the first half, because I stopped animating for a while halfway through when summer came, and I was never able to get the settings right when I returned to the project.  But hopefully, the quality of the story makes up for it!

Re: Holding Our Own: Episode 4 Production Log

Missy's birthday is August 8th, 1993.  Missy celebrates her birthday in Holding Our Own episode 4, and I wanted to release it on her birthday.  Hard as I tried, it just don't seem feasable.  I'm hoping to pick up the pace beginning with episode 5, but here's my plan:

Right now I'm adding the sound effects and laugh track to the first 2 of episode 4's four segments.  A bit more polish after that, and at least the first half will be done shortly.  Already much of the supplemental audio on segment 1 is complete in ony a few short hours... this all shouldn't take too long.  I'll continue of segment 3, the longest and most difficult of the four segments, and in the meantime, I anticipate releasing segments 1 and 2 on August 8th, which is Missy's birthday.  After ep 4 is released, the DVD and blu-ray will be produced, and I'll shoot episode 5, writing a large batch of episodes  while doing so: 7, 8, 10, 11, and 12.   7 and 8 are already outlines and 9 is completed; I wrote that script in under 24 hours!

So by releaseing half the episode, it will hopefully keep you wanting more, and will make sure I don't rush the second half, which already has some technical issues with which I must contend.  Mark your calendars!

Re: Holding Our Own: Episode 4 Production Log

The laugh track has been added to the first two segments.  I'm currently adding sound effects.  They're coming out well.  Over two minutes of sound effects are in place already.  Meanwhile, two years of writer's block ended and my outline for episode 7 is turning quickly into a script.  I wrote down a lot of dialogue in one sitting, and more after that.  I didn't want to take too much time away from the sound work but at the same time needed to get these ideas down lest I forget.  I'm still on a decent schedule to meet the August 8th deadline.

Thanks, Frame 5 Studios!

I hope to have a trailer soon.

Also, this Hanna-Barbera cartoon is one of HOO's biggest influences.  And although The Flintsontes is an influence, it's not that.

Re: Holding Our Own: Episode 4 Production Log

Missy's birthday is in one week!  Also, it will be the release date for Holding Our Own 4, segment 1 of 4.  Segment 2 will be released shortly after that.  The entire episode will then be released as a whole in the future.

Stay Tuned.

I can't wait!  I'm so glad you were able to get it done.  I know how much time and attention you put into this series! mini/bigsmile

Re: Holding Our Own: Episode 4 Production Log

I'm so excited, man! I've been eagerly awaiting this for a long while.

Re: Holding Our Own: Episode 4 Production Log

This is the first segment of episode 4.  The next segment will be released soon, too.  But since tomorrow is Missy's birthday, you get to see in tomorrow's segment how Missy was born!  Also, in segment 3, she'll be celebrating her birthday.

The plan is to release segment 1 tomorrow, segment 2 soon, and when the whole episode as the full 4 segments at once.

I decided on this because life happened and it took me a lot longer to make this episode, and I wanted to post something for you all!  Especially the voice team!

A few of our semi-regulars from episode 2 will appear here: Chay (voiced by BiM's own Allana Carnie) and Carleigh (voiced by semi-pro voice actress Jakunen Neesan) are in the episode.  Also, two of BiM's greatest voice talents: Rachel Dew AKA Dew Films and Jay (Silver) share the screen together as municipal clerks.  They'll probably be single episode characters, but will first be scene in the second segment.  Holding Our Own wouldn't be what it is without such talent.

Re: Holding Our Own: Episode 4 Production Log

I hope to resume my brisk pace again.  I was bogged down by stuff but spent the time organizing frames, which isn't easy when thre are 17,000 in one brickfilm!

I completed animating two scenes last week.  I hope to be on a steady schedule again for the rest of the film.
