I've been reading Transformer comics the past hour or so.
I met Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime
He signed a TF annul-type trade paperback that I owned. He actually never saw that one before and was impressed by the artwork on the cover.
He really liked the rendition of Optimus
I cna't find the image on a duck duck go search. it is an obscure title.
however, the image of Prime on the first TF comic book is really nice and unique
Sparkplug and Buster (Spike's brother) on the cover
in the stupid Michael Bay movies they call Spike Sam.
<Regan> Stupid
Calling those movies stupid is an insult to the word stupid
Stupid has some standard of decency
<hooep9> HOOep9 hahaha
Then there was the cover to issue 5. This was one of the best covers of the 1980s, let alone the entire 80-issue Marvel Run. Known as "Are All dead", this continued the story that was originally going to be a 4-issue series. When they decided to keep running the comic, the ended issue 4 with Shockwave defeating all the Autobots.
Let me think... which was another great cover.?
Well, #6 was really cool: Megatron vs Shockwave, and it appeared in a few eps of "You Can't Do That On Television", a Canadian comedy series for children
let me duck duck go issue 6
nice touch with a military helicoptor trying to intervene
Number 17 was awesome to me. Part 2 of a Cybertron 2-issue story. Blaster condemned to death by melting
Issue 23 "Decepticon Graffiti", featured two delinquent Decepticon cars, Runamuck and Runabout, who vandalized the Statue of Liberty. Mostly they wrote in Cybertronian, but on the cover they mock humans in English
Headmasters 1 was a 1987 spin-off that tied into the main series by issue 38. Way cool cover of Fortress Maximas removing his own head to prove he will not harm planet Nebulon's natives.
I also loved issue 38's cover
HOOep9 Issue 47 was the first in a 4-part "underbase saga" which led up to a special double-sized 50th issue. Awesome cover of Buster's girlfriend, Jessie Beller, pursued by Overbite, one of six Seasons, who are nautical Decepticons
shame I can't find a good 50, one of my favs. Starscream, under influence of the underbase, become a Galactus-type being, who killed about 50 regularly appearing Autobots and decepticons alike in his lust for conquest
Issue 53 took Two "Pretender" transformers to planet Femax, a Feminazi planet, to do a favor for "The Mechannibals", a race of robots that eat other robots, in exchange for 50 million microchips to (try to) repair the Autobots killed by Starscream in issue 50
In issue 56, TF Uk writer Simon Furman took over and the writing dramatically improved, although the art became pretty average with pencils by Jose Delbo. I like him, however. But when Furman's friend Andrew Wildman also moved from the UK to work for Marvel US, the art matched the quality of the writing. Here's his first cover, issue 70. The final 12 issues of Transformers (69 to 80) are my favorite and represent the comic at
its best.
however, sales were slipping and it was cancelled by issue 80. Here is #70 cover: Still Life, by Andrew Wildman. Features Megatron and Ratchet Fused together in an interdimensional accident
WRONG IMAGE POSTED
wait. that's 53
I also love 71, Wildman's cover of Optimus surrenduring to Scorponok, the Headmaster who is leading the Decepticons at this point. The rain adds to the drama; chars are at their worst when it's raining
Wildman penciled the entire run from here till the end, except for the double-sized issue 75, which was by Geoff Senior, Wildman's UK partner. I never liked his [Senior's] art. It alwasys looked flat and static to me, until generation 2. Issue 80 is the final issue, and I love the cover. I own Andrew Wildman's original pencil sketch of the final splash page to this final issue. A funny story follows this picture
With the TF comic getting the axe on issue 80, Furman was only given notice to wrap it up after 76. So the entire storyline had to be complete in 4 issues. The deadlines were crazy and they were all under a lot of pressure. After meeting Andrew Wildman on the day he gave me this final splash page, he told me about the stress they underwent, and told me not to miss any details on the art work.
After taking the image home, I noticed something he wrote outside the border, where it wouldn't get copied and appear int eh comic book, a message for Steven Baskerville, Wildman's inker. the message was "I'm HAVING A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN!" followed by numerous !!! that were gradually increasing in size.
I hope you enjoyed this excursion into the best Transformer comics covers from Eneration 1.
generation *
This is all from my memory. I only used Duck Duck go for ht ecover images
