Re: The Animation Challenge

This was not easy, and I'm not that happy with what I came up with, but still, a fun and challenging theme.

I didn't have a camera with me, so it's shot on my iPhone, and the quality is just ok, I still need to work out some of the settings for the best quality, But it was still fun to make. mini/smile  I built a custom rig out of tecnic/bionicle to hold up the figure while upside down.

And yes, I am aware that its not technically a cartwheel.

An aerial cartwheel, a little Liu Kang action.

Re: The Animation Challenge

Alrighty guys, the deadline is here!

I must say I'm extremely pleased with the number and quality of entries. With 9 participants total, this round had quite the respectable turnout. It took a good deal of deliberation and soul searching, but I think I finally narrowed it down to a top 4.

- 4th Place

rioforce!

Was gonna just do a top three but had to give this one a shoutout. The use of multiple disjointed arms to convey a sense of motion blur was pretty creative. However, I couldn't help but notice that the animation felt a bit rushed. Honestly, I felt a tad dizzy watching it. Could have used a bit more experimentation with the execution, but the technique itself felt rather innovative and I couldn't help but appreciate that.

- 3rd Place

Raytistic!

Good anticipation and follow-through. Nice use of disjointed arms. I feel the motion could have been refined a bit but overall a solid entry.

- 2nd Place

Shawarma Studios!

Your entry has a really fun, cartoony style. Great anticipation and nice, subtle follow-through at the end. The mid-maneuver bounce was well done and a nice deviation from a generic cartwheel.

-1st Place

Pongowl!

As far as I'm concerned, this entry is basically flawless. You managed to capture such a natural, flowing motion that's just plain fun to watch over and over. I'd also like to point out how much I appreciate the sense of weight you managed to give the character. Very well done.

Good to see the Animation Challenge back on it's feet again! Let's make sure it continues that way guys. Take it away, Pong!

Re: The Animation Challenge

Congrats Pongowl, an excellent job. I animated my test during an animation demonstration as a guest speaker for my mom's 4th and 5th grade classes. They wanted me to follow up on the results, so I've sent her your link so the kids can see how different an animator's approach to something like "a cartwheel" can be. I'm sure they will enjoy seeing how you used antic/follow thru, squash/stretch, and slow in/slow out (ease), which are the three principles I covered with them that day.

Awesome! Nice going, Pong!

Re: The Animation Challenge

Thanks, everyone! I'm glad to see the Animation Challenge is alive and well once again! mini/smile

The challenge for this week is Crawling in a Tight Place! Have your minifig get down on their hands and knees and move through a narrow passageway. To be clear, this involves showing the figure crawl below a barrier or into a tunnel that has a low ceiling. In real life, this maneuver heavily involves the knees, so I'm interested to see how this motion is approximated with minifigs.

The deadline for this round is February 19th, which leaves opens two weekends for folks to make entries.

Good luck, I can't wait to see what y'all come up with!

Re: The Animation Challenge

I tried and failed miserabley. I hope everyone else succeeds though! Maybe I'll try again once I regain my confidence. mini/tongue

Re: The Animation Challenge

Ah, but the challenge isn't about winning, it's about forcing yourself to do brief exercises that challenge your current abilities, in a low risk environment. Best way to build confidence is by doing the challenges. It's really more of a workout than a contest.
