LEGO CITY Stop Motion - Jungle Starter Set

LEGO CITY STOP MOTION

Hi everybody !

This is my very first stop motion video, so if you have any advice, I'll be very happy to know. I wanted at first to only concentrate myself on how to do it rather than a big and complex scenario, so, that's why it's kind of a presentation of the Jungle Starter Set.

If you liked this video, give it a thumb up, and don't forget to subscribe for the upcoming brickfilms.

Re: LEGO CITY Stop Motion - Jungle Starter Set

For a first animation, this is very impressive. It was engaging, creative, amusing, and full of life. Not much I can say about the animation except practice makes perfect. Some of the shots were a little choppy, but considering this is your first stop motion, that's to be expected. I noticed that you used easing and a decent walk cycle which is something I don't notice in other first attempts. It isn't a stretch to say that this is the best first stop motion I've ever seen. Keep it up, man. I'm looking forward to your future works.

Re: LEGO CITY Stop Motion - Jungle Starter Set

This is your first one? THis was really really good! It takes a lot of people (myself included) years to get this good at it! The only thing wrong really was the flicker, and even I still struggle with that. This was a very creative way of showcasing your new set! I especially enjoyed the bit where the minifigure threw the knife at the hand. The sound effects were spot on as well! When I was six, I had a nightmare about a talking alligator, and it sounded exactly like the one in your video, so I’m not sure if that’s positive or negative....
Well done!

Re: LEGO CITY Stop Motion - Jungle Starter Set

Thank you very much to both of you ! I note the negative points and will be working on it.
And yes, it's my first, or kind of... I would say that I already did some when I was younger. No more than 4 stop motion videos maybe, with Transformers, Cars and Lego but the last one is from 2011 and it was just to see how could it be (they are pretty bad, but I was impatient sadly, that's why I've never done it before I think).
Anyway, if I'm not late on my actual work, next video's coming Friday 27th at 7 o'clock pm (this kind of news can be found on my Facebook page mini/wink ).

Re: LEGO CITY Stop Motion - Jungle Starter Set

What an incredible first animation! And a fun way to showcase your new set. My favorite part was the cop jumping/sliding across the boat.
You're ready to dig deeper into the principles of animation and bringing greater detail to your already smoothly moving characters. What I recommend looking at next is gravity, specifically, how things speed up as they approach the ground, and how each particular thing bounces or falls flat. The classic animation exercises of animating a bouncing ball or a falling flour sack are very famous and should be easy to find. Study them and try them out in stop motion. Try them out with clay to get a feel for squash and stretch and how the volume of an object remains consistent, even when they squash or stretch. Then see how you can apply that to lego models doing similar actions. The illusion of weight, and of effort used to lift that weight, are one of the "Holy Grails" of animation, that we all hope to be able to achieve.
Also "anticipation and follow-through" are never to be underrated, and something I think almost every animator can pay more attention to.
Excellent work, and welcome to this bizarre and wonderful craft!

Thank you thistof ! Yeah, I like it to ! mini/wink
Great, I note that and will work on it. That's incredible how it's complex sometime to anticipate a movement, so it will be a really important exercice.

Re: LEGO CITY Stop Motion - Jungle Starter Set

The best example is to watch a pitcher in baseball. The ball doesn't just fly out of his hand, there's this big fantastic wind up, and then after he releases the ball what does his body do? Exaggeration is another principle of animation, so making the anticipation and follow through really clear and exaggerated makes the motion very clear and entertaining.
