Re: Your Top Ten?

I read every single one of the posts in this thread. What a varied community. Some of my favorite movies are in your lists but to narrow them to ten? Holy cow.

I'll try:

Dummy-this ensemble cast is brilliantly eclectic and Adrien Brody is in top form
Black Sheep-Were-sheep? Favorite quote: "You've got a pretty f*@#$ up idea of animal husbandry!"
Donnie Darko-Finally saw the director's cut and prefer the original
Breakfast Club-A movie that captures the insanity of being a teenager.
Zombieland-"What's your biggest regret?"
Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit-the detail and humor are unmatched in animation.
Drop Dead Fred
Aliens-My dad let me watch this when I was 7. I've been hooked ever since.
Willow-Just watched this again recently and found it just as fun as I remember it.
Dark Crystal/Labyrinth-2 films same spot. I can't talk about one without discussing the other. Terrific and epic all around. Side note: Last summer I was able to see the traveling Jim Henson exhibit in Lexington. It was one of those experiences in my life I'll never forget. To be able to glimpse the inside workings of a most brilliant man...awe inspiring.

Thinking of the hundreds of movies I've watched in my lifetime-it's always possible to overlook some. I tend to think of "My Top 100" in each genre I like. I also tend to see "My Favorites" as those that have weathered the years and still seem fresh. Perhaps this is why most of the films on people's favorite lists are older. Movies like the Dark Knight haven't been around long enough to be a favorite. It really is a brilliant film and should be on favorite lists in a few years.

A lot of people like Star Wars. I watched it the first time in college and it was homework. I was required to watch it to pass a class. Having not grown up with it (we chose horror in the household over science fiction) it was humorous to see what all the hubbub was about.

Your thoughts?
Jared

Re: Your Top Ten?

These are not in any particular order.
1.) The Iron Giant (1999)
This movie is just incredible. Warner Bros. really mishandled distribution of this one.
2.) The Toy Story Trilogy
These films really made Pixar what it is today: one of the best storytellers of all time.
3.) Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Another really good film, though not as an adaption of the book, as I feel it focuses too much on Wonka, and not enough on Charlie Bucket.
4.) Raiders of the Lost Ark
My only issue with this epic film is that there isn't a single song of-the-time [1936] in it. Not once do you hear Benny Goodman's clarinet, or Tommy Dorsey's trombone, or the vocal chords of the Andrews Sisters. Not once!
5.) Ratatouille
I like this film because of the different artistry style that Pixar was experimenting with at the time. Not only with the opening and closing credits, but also with construction of the three-dimensional characters themselves. And because of the pun in the title.
6.) Duck Soup
I haven't watched the whole thing, but what I have seen of it is absolutely hilarious. The Marx Brothers were really able to achieve some amazingly funny jokes and gags without swearing or sexual references. That's not to say they didn't, but I haven't seen any thus far.
7.) Airplane!
Unlike the above film, this one does use swearing and sexual references to make some of its jokes, but it's done so well, that there isn't much to complain about, though some of their better jokes didn't contain either. Being a pilot myself, I find the entire premise hilarious because it's so improbable. Also, the use of the propeller gag when the main airplane is a Boeing 707 was the best.
8.) The Empire Strikes Back
This is my favorite Star Wars film out of all six, though I'm not sure why.
9.) Inception
It's rare that you see a film with an original premise that is also executed as well as this one.
10.) Wakko's Wish
I first watched this when I was four [2000]. Watching it 11 years later, I'm amazed at how well it was written considering the characters they were writing for. It's basically an hour-and-a-half long Animaniacs sketch, which made it kinda difficult for the writers to carry on a plot where a sketch on the show would normally have lasted no longer than 44 minutes. It's kinda confusing to watch, as there are at least five different sub-plots all occurring at about the same time. All in all, it's a great film to watch if you're babysitting kids, as both you and the kids can watch it without rolling your eyes or getting bored.

Re: Your Top Ten?

^Wakko's Wish wasn't a very good film if you're going by the standards of the regular Animaniacs TV show.

It's a good movie, I just feel it should have been better. It's definitely a kids movie, without a doubt, while the Animaniacs TV show felt more for kids and older folks. It didn't really start feeling like Animaniacs until the end, when

Spoiler (click to read)

they start messing with the villain, the tunnel of horrors and etc.

Just sayin'.

Re: Your Top Ten?

1.) The King's Speech - Brilliant Acting and the best ensemble of the decade.
2.) The Social Network - Couldn't of been better directed.
3.) Duma - One of the best plots ever, the story never lagged off.
4.) Goal! - Way better than any Baseball or Hockey movie.  This one literally kicks away all other sports movies.
5.) Toy Story 3 - The perfect ending to a long story that made most people cry there eyes out.
6.) 2001: A Space Odyssey - The story was good and left gaps for you to fill in which makes it one off the best movies ever.
7.) Wall-E - The story and animation was neat and made it a nice little film.
8.) The Star Wars Saga - Yeh.  It had to be in the top 10.
9.) Indian Jones Films - George Lucas and Steven Spielberg never disappoint.
10.) The Cove - For a documentary this is superb.

You're absolutely right about all this stuff, but it's just a film I grew up with, and am amazed it turned out as well as it did. Writing anything longer than 30 minutes with these guys is hard. "Hooray for North Hollywood", which lasted a total of 44 minutes, wasn't one of their best episodes either. I can't imagine how a feature length film would've turned out (Wakko's Wish was straight-to-video).

You are correct, though I'm sure some of them were quite popular at one time (and still are in some circles).

Re: Your Top Ten?

Anyway since people are adding to their top 10s I might as well to do the same:

My Dinner with Andre, Good Will Hunting, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, In Bruges, Most of Sergio Leone's movies, most of Tarantino's movies, Taxi Driver, The Departed, Fargo, No Country for Old Men, Metropolis, Seven Samurai, Memento, One flew over the Cuckoo's nest, Most of Kubrick's films, Psycho (and more Hitchcock films), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Unforgiven, Apocalypse Now, Donnie Darko, Trainspotting, and still a lot more.

Re: Your Top Ten?

1. Contact (1997) - Just an all-time favorite for me. Perhaps not perfect, but a respectful film to the classic novel "Contact" by Carl Sagan.

2. Super 8 (2011) - An overall beautiful film with soul, spirit, and emotional depth to spare. I was literally blown away. Any flaws it has is easily made up for by the pure imagination it brings to the screen.

3. A Beautiful Mind (2001) - I don't know why, but I just really happened to love this film. I found it to be extremely well made and really entertaining.

4. The Thing (Shared With "The Thing From Another World") (1982/1951) - While the original 1951 film is a classic, the 1982 remake brought it's own version to the screen in a beautiful way. Both are really well made, thrilling, and really entertaining. Just something about them that keeps me interested each time I watch them.

5. Psycho (1960) - Ahead of its time and beautifully made, this is just a masterpiece I want to watch over and over again.

6. Inception (2010) - Perhaps a masterpiece-to-be, just a brilliant film that's both intelligent and entertaining. Something that's rare in most summer blockbusters.

7. True Grit (2010) - I'm not very experienced with westerns, nor have I seen the original film, but this is just plain out fantastic! Loved it.

8. Hearts in Atlantis (2001) - Just a beautiful film that I could personally watch over and over again. Beautifully made and mysterious, I'm entertained by it every time.

9. Let the Right One In (Shared with "Let Me In") (2008/2010) - The original is a classic. The remake is passionately made. Both are brilliant, but of course nothing can ever compare to an already fantastically made source. Both are an amazing addiction to the rare list of vampire "romances", only so much more.

10. The Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) - An amazing and visually-striking stop motion animation film. It has a great sense of atmosphere with some brilliant storytelling. A true masterpiece in my book, and a film I could watch over and over again!

Well there's my list. These are just films I never get tired of and could watch several times. I am almost always in the mood for them. mini/XD They aren't really in any order, I'd say they'd all tie. But of course there has to be some kind of list so there it is. Just all of my personal favorites! mini/bigsmile

Perhaps I'll post more later on.
