Topic: Any tips on animating a dark room?

There's a couple of film ideas I have with a darkened room involved in it and I was wondering what is a good way to get a decent looking darkened room. I was thinking of building a set with either black or dark grey bricks but don't know how I would go about lighting etc.

Back after taking a very long break. I'm going to be making more films and hopefully going to be gradually getting better. Comeback time.

Personally I'd say just mess around with the camera settings until you get it looking how you want. If it's at night and there are windows, you can go with a blue lamp and still fiddle with camera settings, but the blue light would be more exclusive to nighttime outside.

Turn the brightness down on your camera.

Re: Any tips on animating a dark room?

I am currently filming in a dark room and i've used dark grey bricks for the set and dimmed the brightness on the camera, then in post production im going to dim it down slightly more. The reason i'm doing the rest of the dimming in post production is because I still want the quality I get filming in on bright set as I tend to find that if I make it too dark the quality looks.... Dodgy.

Mess around with the aperture and shutter speed. I used that in the first few shots in this:

If at night, add a blue tint by placing a blue gel over a light (Also dims the light mini/bigsmile). If just a dark room then don't do that.

Lower your exposure and gain levels. Keep exposure higher than gain. Adjust focus and tip the contrast up slightly.

You don't need black bricks for it to work: I used white bricks here.

That was a really good effect.

Re: Any tips on animating a dark room?

yesterday i was messing around with lighting for my batman film and i came up with this http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7150/6716255723_87f86fa070_z.jpg

i used a led flash light on a hook at about 3 feet over the set.

Yeah, when I was in elementary school one of my friends used dynamite to blow up another kid. He thought it would be funny, just like in Looney Toons, but it was really tragic and messed up his life forever. People need to be way more careful about the cartoons they show to kids. -Jargon

Re: Any tips on animating a dark room?

Some specific lights are available in market, and those you can got from the any departmental store...
I got from it electric store which is near to my home...

Re: Any tips on animating a dark room?

The Batman effect is a good starting point.

Now you need to get small areas of reflected light catching his eyes and the bat logo. These would need to come from below, as if reflected up of a wet floor.

On the films, you always see Batman eyes, even though they are heavily hooded by his mask - you would not see that if all the light was coming from above.

Movies and tv never rely on a single source of light, no matter how dark they want the image to be...and remember to be subtle!
