Topic: Careers in Film Making

On this site, many of us play our own separate role (which for most of us would be a director). Now what if you got a chance to get a job you love, in the film making business? There are many different roles to play, each on being different! If you could chose which one, which one would it be:

  • Script Writer: Writes the story of the film

  • Actor/Actress : The fame, but also the roles of the film

  • Director: The head of the production unit.

  • Musician/Composer: Without any music, a good action film may not be as 'intense' as hoped.

  • Voice Actor: Does the voices for many animated (if not all) films. Though at times, the voice actor is also an actor.

  • Camera Operator: Operates the camera.

  • Animator: Animation for the 'bigs' such as Disney, Pixar, or Dreamworks.

  • Editor: The one who puts it all together.

The are many more jobs, and many have different roles. Let's say the amount of money earned from each one doesn't matter, just choose the one you'd like to be best. Also, one last option for you to choose:

  • Television

  • Movie

For me, I've played many roles in the film making process, and I like each role the best, so it's quite tough for me to decide upon a career. But if I were to choose, I'd chose either:
Musician/Composer for movies
Animator for television
So what would you guys choose?

Re: Careers in Film Making

For me, I would like to be a director, script writer and animator.
I would be a director, script writer and animator for both TV and a director and script writer for Movies. That's my preferred choice.

You can do anything, just have fun while doing it.

Re: Careers in Film Making

I'd love to produce mostly, but if I had some good idea in my mind then I'd step up and write the screenplay then direct the movie. Also I'd like to makes cameos, no lead roles though.

Re: Careers in Film Making

Script writer for movies.
I'd like to direct films too but I'm not sure if I could work well with actors.

Re: Careers in Film Making

I've dabbled in Television production at my college, and it was pretty fun.
I enjoy operating cameras, but mostly VFX and editing.

Re: Careers in Film Making

Well I already work in film, but my favorite job is tied at directing or editing. Being the director is great because you get to paint a picture based on an idea and make it your own. While editing is fun because you get to make everything come together and realize the vision of the director and writer.

My favorite positions to work at are animation, VFX and editing. I like operating the camera, but it's not one of my favorite positions.

Re: Careers in Film Making

Re: Careers in Film Making

I dreamed of being a Director for years, but due to the brickfilms I helped out for, I would also like to be a voice actor, and I would work in movies, not tv.

Re: Careers in Film Making

I'd like to be an editor or camera operator - for movies.

Re: Careers in Film Making

I've been interested in script writing and animating.  But not 3-D computer animating, it seems like you have to use a lot of math to do that.  I'm okay at math, but I wouldn't want to do it very frequently.  Besides, I can't multiply or divide without a calcualtor.  So that means I'd most likely be doing something for a TV show.

Not literally dead, just no longer interested in Lego or animation.

Pretty much the same story here, although I think I'd be OK with actors. Its more of the crew I would have the problem with. See, I've been spoilt by Brickfilming - where you can control every single aspect single-handedly. I'm one of those people who are like "YOU ARE SHEEP - I AM SHEPHERD!!" This is fine if your like Hitchcock or Kubrick in how everyone appreciates your god-given genius and does exactly as you say - but when your just starting out and you have a billion amateurs who want to do it their way and constantly doubt your perception of cinema ("Have you ever watched a film screened at Cannes NOT directed by Tarantino? No? WELL SHUT UP AND HOLD THE MICROPHONE STEADY!!") I begin to doubt my Directing career. Its gotten to a point where I just sit back, let my group go and film their stupid revenge story that a 12 year old could write at the back of their hand with all the professionalism of a drunk/high Ed Wood - and then I try to salvage all I can of this mess in the editing suite.

My dream would be to start out Writing and then maybe get enough credibility to Direct my own movie. I would really like to Direct both a 2D Animated Peanuts feature-length movie (in the style of Snoopy Come Home and Its the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown), and an adaptation of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (based off of Pink Floyd's: The Wall movie). I'm also trying to write a Western, a semi-autobiographical drama, and a stop-motion Christmas Movie with a marionette-style production design - although I'm a painfully slow writer and I give up on projects very quickly...

I know that feel, bro.

I'd love to direct, though I prefer the idea of doing something independent and low-key, with a smaller crew to most films. I'd also love to write for the movies, and direct said screenplays.
If not those two, then definitely editing, which I love. Or doing practical effects or something (if I was actually good at that).

Haha, I have written both such things. I believe you read one of 'em (which is in dire need of a rewrite).
