Re: Careers in Film Making

Just got an offer to work on a local documentary like show about teenagers who have bright future in sports (basketball/soccer/football/baseball and etc.) mostly it would include interviews and I might possibly be the director of the show/series. I'm sooooo excited!

It's purpose is more like a program filler you know but still that's a start mini/bigsmile

A huge congratulations to you Rsteenoven. I hope you continue on with your recent success in this tough industry.

Re: Careers in Film Making

I just recently I got a freelancing job as a Video Editor for a small gaming company and I'm working part time as the VFX and Graphic Designer for a Freelancing videographer company that creates promotoional videos for small companies that are starting up.

It's not the "Filmmakers Dream," but we all start somewhere mini/smile

A Life? Cool! Where can I download one of those from?

Re: Careers in Film Making

I'm currently doing the editing and filming for a series of short films that me and some friends make with our spare time. Expect to see some in the hopefully near future.

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

Re: Careers in Film Making

I'm currently doing nothing for anyone...because I'm just that cool.
No, actually because I live in a city (30,000 pop.) in Alaska that has no way of going anywhere except by plane or boat...it's a peninsula, but is may as well be an island.  There's not exactly many opportunities here for anything relating to film  mini/blankexpression  mini/sad

I might be editing the video from my piano teacher's piano recital (I don't play in 'em, I'm a wimp in front of people) in April when she has it, but all I'd do is cut out the changes in who's playing and add names.  That's my big news.

Re: Careers in Film Making

I guess it would be script writer, as writing my series has gotten me interested more in the writing aspects of producing a film than anything else.  I would otherwise do soundtrack, but I prefer to make music for my own happiness.  If I do it for someone else, it would feel like "work".  Maybe I can write original songs for characters to sing during episodes.  I love such songs and am compiling them into a collection.  A famous example is "Open Up Your Heart And Let The Sunshine In", sung by Pebbles & Bamm Bamm in season 5 of The Flintstones.  Believe it or not, if you listen to the lyrics, the song is about the Devil.

I'm not sure if there's a particular job just devoted to masking. I would believe thst masking would go under being a visual effects artist.

The position would be better known as a Roto Artist.

Re: Careers in Film Making

I am a Roto and Paint artist by trade, I have worked for Framestore, and Cinesite. I did roto work on the new 47 Ronin (2013) film, and also the upcoming 300 Rise of an Empire (2014) film.

A roto artist is an entry level job that progresses into digital compositing etc (green screen, 3d integration, projection mapping, colour correction etc.

Let me know if you have any questions on getting into the job.

Oh and now I am working for a Marketing company as a video editor/motion graphics artist/cameraman, shooting corporate and 3rd sector movies. mini/bigsmile

Re: Careers in Film Making

Very impressive, Rsteevoven.

I suppose if I had one question to ask it would be, how, indeed, did you get into the job?

I am teaching myself on how to draw for this very reason. I have a number of interests, but they all lead me to different schools (Which drive my parents berserk).

Let me know if you have any questions on getting into the job.

I am also interested on how you were hired. Do you have to go to college, take preliminary classes, etc?
