By the sounds of things, most people don't realise there is a community around them. Maybe if BiM didn't frown upon discussing where we lived, at least generally speaking like the city we live in, then we could meet up as communities. I myself have always been for starting a brickfilmers club in Perth.

That's not such a great idea when you have younger members. The internet's still a dangerous place.

Yeah, there's probably a work around. Maybe like organised events, even for major cities. That way individual members don't say anything about their location, but they can still go along to the events.

Only trusted members or officials could approve these events maybe.

Re: Brickfilmer's though life

This forum connects us though we were separated by a great distance.  After completing my first film, I emailed the rest of the voice cast and said how I thought it was amazing how this could be accomplished today, compared trying to brickfilm in the 1980s.  We'd almost never find each other and if we did, have to mail cassettes of our voices to each other, and we'd not have the digital film to work with, etc.

I hear what you're saying, but sometimes I think Brickfilming would be a whole lot more fun if I could get to know the people behind the great films beyond the world of LEGO.

Re: Brickfilmer's though life

Talking about brickfilming in our lives, I am doing a speech on Animation in general, and I am using the sub topic of Brickfilming. This is going to be very interesting.

Re: Brickfilmer's though life

Slurping, I am an animation devotee.  I would love to hear your speech on animation if it gets recorded!

Re: Brickfilmer's though life

I hope it doesn't, the last speeches were recorded, many people heard mine, and thought it was funny, but I agree with them.
The whole point of the speech is based upon passtimes, so I decided to use animation. I realised I could make a decent enough speech if I focused on brickfilming and storytelling. It should'nt really matter, as most people know I animate using Lego.
If the speech is recorded, I might be able to put it online.

Re: Brickfilmer's though life

There's nothing wrong with wanting to meet up with other brickfilmers, the problem is publicly advertising "HEY WE'RE GOING TO BE HERE AT THIS TIME" cause not everyone who reads this stuff is a member. There are most likely some creepy people who read our posts (then again, there are some creepy members too mini/tongue ). In addition, it's extremely difficult for some to meet up seeing as that a lot of people live in other countries and not too much money to fork over a flight to X city. I'm not discouraging meeting up with other brickfilmers, I'm just saying that if you do, it should be arranged privately and with people who you really trust and are comfortable with.

Well some one could post their city and set it up via PM.... or just wait till brickflicks comes back (for those on the east coast)

Re: Brickfilmer's though life

I think it's pretty safe to say the majority of us aren't creepy (well, not that sort of creepy, anyway).  Brickfilming is a niche hobby, it's a small community, and making a half-decent brickfilm requires a considerable effort, so anyone with nasty ulterior motives would probably be much more inclined to visit more popular sites which require less effort.  Of course, forums can be read by anyone, so it's entirely possible creepy people still read stuff here but I don't think the likelihood would be especially great.

The main problem is the fact we're scattered across all the world and getting together in one place would be extremely expensive (we don't by any chance happen to have any secret multi-billionaires here who wouldn't mind forking out a couple of thousand for air fares?).  (Although I do think it would be relatively easy to hypothetically speaking organise a get-together for UK brickfilmers, since there quite a few and the UK is quite small in comparison with, say, the USA.)  But yeah, it would most likely have to be organised privately.

That's not really helpful for people who live, y'know, in the rest of the world...

Is Jampot secretly a multi-billionaire vigilante who spends his nights beating the criminal underworld to a pulp with his bare hands?  Does Nathan Wells own a Fortune 500 company?  Is Chris W. really a reclusive CEO of a software company who faked his death and unbeknownst to us all really runs a corporate empire?  Is Kieren Barnett an alias of Bill Gates?

Fine, I'll admit it.
The truth is...I am Iron Man.

Y'all people are lucky that you at least have road access to each other.  Where I live in Alaska we ain't got none of those swanky roads connecting one another.
So far as I'm aware, there's one other member of the forum in Alaska but like I said...roads.  I'm on a peninsula that may as well be an island since there's no roads out.
If any of you ever happen to take a cruise to Alaska you should totally let me know because you will come through my town if you're the cruisin' type.

Re: Brickfilmer's though life

As far as I can tell, the place with the highest density of brickfilmers per square mile is either California or Germany. I think it's strange how disconnected BiM is from the German brickfilm community - I mean, it's so popular there that they have an annual film festival where they show nothing but brickfilms, and it's rarely ever mentioned.

When I went to California I tried to host a brickfilmer gathering, and I got to meet filmyguy and we chatted for a while. It was cool. mini/smile

John D.  I didn't know you lived out in big Alaska.  Are you north of Fairbanks?  Because that's pretty much where the actual "roads" end, isn't it?

I always assumed that brickfilmers were around about the same spread evenly throughout most English-Speaking countries, but America just seemed like it had more, when really it just has a high population, an thus seems like it has more, when America is really just a very big place.  To an East Coast person like me, California is like another country.

I would guess that living in a more populated area would make you closer to more brickfilmers.

Is it really a big thing in Germany?  I had no idea.  If it is, then I'm surprised that not many Germans ever come on here.  Or perhaps they don't because they already have a big enough brickfilming website so they don't feel the need to connect to any English-speaking brickfilmers.  The French still come here sometimes even though they have their own forum, and I'm really glad of that.
Maybe they're too busy running around giving rainbow mushrooms to people.

I would be interested to know exactly how the brickfilmers of the World are spread, however, that would probably be very difficult to find out, perhaps impossible, as many people try to keep exact locations a secret.  I myself only tell people my country and time zone.

Re: Brickfilmer's though life

Well brickfilming is still not that well known in Germany. My cousin from Germany didn't know much about brickfilming until I showed him how to to it on his ipod touch when we were both visiting our grandparents in Washington.

Re: Brickfilmer's though life

I don't think most brickfilmers realize how incredibly niche our hobby is. We're probably one of the most niche hobbies that exist. Think of it this way:

If you're a brickfilmer, you probably started brickfilming because you either liked LEGO, or liked filmmaking.

Only some people are LEGO fans -> only some LEGO fans like filmmaking -> only some LEGO fans who like filmmaking actually make films -> Only some LEGO fans who like filmmaking and who make films use stop-motion -> Only some LEGO fans who make films with stop-motion are into online communities.

We are niche community  (film fans) within a niche community (LEGO film fans) within a niche community (LEGO stop-motion fans) within a niche community (LEGO and film websites).

Honestly, it's a wonder that there are this many of us at all.
