Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The Beauty and the Beast

(I'm talking about the new version)

This movie is exactly like what you would expect it to be. The usual Disney remake which makes even more children aware of some of the Disney classics. Generally very good in my opinion, but there were a few problems.

First of all, some scenes felt very stretched out, especially some of the songs, it just felt like as if it was taking forever and about half way through them I just wanted them to end. Okay, I'm not a huge fan for musicals, but still, they could have probably done without most of the first song about Belle. Luckily the film did manage to keep me interested throughout, which is good.

In addition to this, the script wasn't great, as it was very predictable since you could often tell exactly what the characters were about to say next, word for word, even if you have never seen this film before (although I have seen the original). The only other problem (albeit fairly small) is the continuity. For the most part, it's fine, but one part which stands out like a sore thumb is:

Spoiler (click to read)

One time when she is riding she starts off in her normal clothes yet by the time she is in the forest she suddenly has a coat on as well. It also never really explains where she gets the horse from because even though Belle and Beast are seen with a horse on the grounds of the castle, the fact that there are not other horses around seems a bit weird.

As I said at the beginning, it is generally a fairly good film, and it does get a lot better throughout, but there were just a few parts which I didn't like, perhaps partly due to taste, but I guess if anyone else has seen it then they can share their thoughts as well.

P.S. If you do go and see this, you might want to stick around to see who all the actors in the main roles were, as you may be surprised.

I mean, who could have guessed that it was Ewan McGregor who was playing the candlestick?!

Sing

Not the funniest movie, but delightfully entertaining watching the animal kingdom sing human hits.  The big nearly 1/2 hour climax was non-stop fun.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Battleship

This is a movie that I have always kind of wanted to see. While it did not reach my full expectations, it did come very very close. It is basically another action movie of aliens invading Earth, humans using their courage and wit to defeat them etc. etc.

While there were a few moments that I felt were quite poor, and the storyline wasn't great due to random moments which were entirely unnecessary and added nothing to the movie being thrown in all over the place, I have to say that it probably has the most (and best) one liners that I have seen all packed into one movie, and with some being very relatable in the recent past, I had a good time watching it. Also, as far as using human knowledge to overcome an alien invasion, this film probably takes the biscuit.

While I wouldn't say it is a must watch by any means, if you have absolutely nothing to do (although with all of us being animators I hope that's not the case mini/shifty) then I would recommend it, largely for the laughs mini/yes

Maybe it's just me but, I just don't get the appeal of this movie. (Thus why I haven't watched it) It's even filmed in a different aspect ratio from the other Star Wars films (which, is SUCH a big pet peeve of mine - when films in a series have different ratios. I'd prefer if each series stuck to one ratio - like how an artist might stick to one canvas type for multiple paintings in the same series)

Also, it isn't part of the overall story arc - That dramatic story arc of the two trilogies and 7th film (as of posting this) are really the only thing that I like about Star Wars over, say, Star Trek or Doctor Who. I used to be pretty interested in the expanded universe but was really put off of it after Disney threw it all away and rebranded it as Star Wars "legends."

Besides, the film just seems like they're trying to overreach and cash in on the franchise when, in a case like this, it's unnecessary.

TBH, I don't even know if Rogue One is part of legends, a new expanded universe, or if it's like some Star Wars VII/II.

It made over a billion dollars though, so, obviously they've tapped into something that appeals to other Star Wars fans... So I guess it is just me.

Rogue One is the different shaped one in the middle, only less interesting.

Seriously though (or rather, humorously though...) Smeagol's above post had me laughing for about 15 minutes straight. The promptness of his response made it that much funnier too. mini/lol

I got a really good laugh out of that, Smeagol.

Personally, I was really hyped for Rogue One, and I really enjoyed it when I got to see it.  But maybe that's just because I'm really into Star Wars.
Maybe you should give it a watch sometime so you can actually see it for yourself.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I saw rogue one and the reason I liked it better than the last one they made was that every one had an important part to play unlike force awakens ray seemed to to be able to do everything on her own and finn just seemed to get in the way I mean he didn't even have any useful information about the first order

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Rogue One's biggest flaw is that it's cast of characters aren't as interesting or as fleshed out as the characters of the original trilogy and the Force Awakens. None of them were largely fleshed out, but K2-SO and Chirrut Imwe really stole the show for me. Also, the fight sequences are spectacular.

Spoiler (click to read)

And I did care about Tthe characters just enough to feel sad for them that they didn't make it alive. However, their death was something I liked about Rogue One. It helped give it that darker, more realistic tone that it was looking for. It also shows the sacrifice that was made in order to give Princess Leia the Death Star plans. Also, really glad they explained the Death Star flaw the way they did!

So, overall I really enjoyed Rogue One!

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

What I liked about it:

1) It showed divisions within the Rebellion.
2) The final scene had some of the best ship-to-ship combat in any Star Wars film, complete with NOrmandy overtones on the ground front
3) It was grittier, and the rebellion seemed to have a lot more at stake.
4) It showed the last remnants of Force Users after Jedi were hunted.
5)  K-2SO, of course

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

On a sidenote, Rogue One does have the same aspect ratio as the other Star Wars films. 2:39:1 (sometimes misstated as 2.35:1 or 2.4:1 but all the Star Wars films are 2.39:1) They shot on Panavision 70 lenses but cropped to 2.39 in the final film.

While it isn't officially a part of the main trilogy, it does fit in very nicely with the rest of the main story which is why I feel that I will like it more than some of the other anthology films coming out like the Han Solo movie, as I have a bad feeling that the latter will just get mixed up in a time period between several movies (it is supposed to span across 6 years during the movie after all).

Rogue One is completely canon, and takes place just before episode IV mini/smile

P.S. It's been confirmed that after filming Star Wars episode IX, there will be a few years with no new Star Wars movies followed by 15 years of annual Star Wars movies! As a Star Wars nerd, I'm really excited mini/delirium

There's a certain son of God's name that comes to mind here... most likely followed by an exclamation, or a deep sigh & facepalm Definitely not watching a cash cow for 15 years straight, that's for certain.

I used to be really into Star Wars (and still am) however, almost every decision that's been made since George Lucas sold the franchise & company has fallen short of my (admittedly low post-prequels) expectations. The hype just wasn't there for me like it was for VII, but, I'm sure I'll break down and watch Rogue One sometime soon...

That's it, though. If I don't like it, Rogue One will turn me off from any future Star Wars movies not featuring the main cast. (And there's already something I absolutely despise from VII that'll be continuing on in VIII, so not much motivation there either)

I just don't want to watch a film that's nothing more than popcorn fluff, meant to sell tickets and create minor enjoyment for hardcore fans, while everyone else'll forget about the movie less than 5 minutes after leaving the theater. I just don't think Rogue One will be as memorable as say, Episode II. (Perhaps it won't be memorable for the wrong reasons... but still - there are much better movies I'd rather waste time with)

That's another reason I wasn't really looking forward to it. I've not been a fan of the creative direction Disney's been taking their content in the past few years (ever since Guardians of the Galaxy, although, it definitely started before that). Besides, I think that Star Wars holds up well enough on its own to not need a dark and gritty reboot. (I'm looking at you, Bond franchise...)

Well that pet peeve can be put to rest for now. (I'm still looking at you, Bond franchise...)

Speaking of which...

Casino Royale (2006)

I wasn't a fan of the Daniel Craig recasting, and don't really care for the Bourne film franchise, so when this film came out - even a big 007 fan like myself couldn't get into it. I appreciated the black & white opening (especially since it's a flashback), and the score was top-notch. But something about the production, be it Craig's performance, the rest of the cast (aside from the character of Felix Leiter - Jeffrey Wright is probably my second favorite interpretation of the character aside from David Hedison), or the unnecessary gritty-ness just annoyed me.

Spoiler (click to read)

I'm looking at you, torture scene. My balls still cringe at that scene...

However, upon second viewing (I've been re-watching the Craig movies in order since I just got the James Bond collection on Blu Ray) I not only really enjoyed it, but it may be one of my overall favorite Bond films!

Perhaps I didn't follow the story very closely the first time around, but upon this viewing, I loved it. The action sequences were fantastic (specifically that near-opening one which is part a Looney Tunes construction site chase, and other part over-the-top James Bond goodness).

Now I'd give it a 4.5/5 stars. Really worth watching again, even if you didn't exactly enjoy it the first time.

I kinda dread watching Quantum of Solace again, though... Not only does it have the worst James Bond credits song, but I found the story overall boring with action sequences just thrown in all over the place. My hatred for QoS not being on Daniel this time, since I was really starting to warm up to him (and loved him in the role in Skyfall). After QoS and Skyfall (which I most likely won't post a review of on here) I'll check out Spectre for the first time, as I missed it when it was in theaters.

No need to.  He has nothing to do with Star Wars anymore.

I respect all your views, and the understanding that Disney will milk this for all it can get.  That's what they do.  But I went into Rogue One in the theater not knowing what to expect, and was really happy with it.  If the 15 years of Star Wars movies is correct, I'll judge each one individually.  I myself am a hardcore fan, but I won't support what I think is a bad movie just because it's Star Wars.  Like the Clone Wars movie.  I doubt I'll like a lot of them, and am likely to consider many to be lame movies meant to take fans' money. But who knows?  Maybe I'll be proven wrong.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Regardless, Star Wars is in much better hands now than in George Lucas's. I'm not one of those people that absolutely dispises the prequels (but, mind you, I really dislike Episode I and none of them are particularly great), but all the same, I'm sure most people on the planet would prefer the recent slate of Star Wars films than those ones. As a Star Wars fanatic, I hate the thought of the franchise selling out, and there is a definite chance that these anthology movies might decline in quality. I am honestly dreading the idea of them making a 4th trilogy, which they are considering doing, but whatever happens, at least we have the originals that we can still enjoy, without George Lucas ruining them anymore than he already did. If and when they finally release the unaltered blu-ray of the original trilogy, I will be happy, regardless of how the rest of the never ending line up of Star Wars movies turn out!

That's why I'm nervous about any of the anthology movies that are about a characters life. While there are some characters (like yoda) who I would be really interested in seeing a movie about his life, characters like Han Solo less so (although I'm sure there will be some good moments). I think that Rogue One will always remain one of - if not my most - favourite anthology film made, because it fits very well into the main storyline, so when I go to watch the main Star Wars trilogy again, I could easily fit Rogue One between episodes 3 and 4.

Speaking of prequels (and I feel like this thread is going to get very hot with arguments in a second), while I don't necessarily mind them too much (in fact in some ways they were better than the originals - please don't kill me for saying that mini/sweat), I do think that there quite a few big CGI mistakes, and everything about episodes 1 and 2 except the battle scenes at the end has just never really interested me, hence why I've never really watched them too much after I first saw them. Episode 3 on the other hand is actually one of my favourite Star Wars movies (note the 'ONE OF', I never said it was my favourite so please don't get triggered) because:

1. I'm a sucker for the Clone Wars
2. A large part of it was epic battle scenes, one of my favourite parts about Star Wars
3. We get to see a lot of very different environments (some of which at the time were brand new to the Star Wars universe)

T H I S

I guess I'll weigh in on Rogue One, cause why not.

It's fine. A sub-par Star Wars movie but still an enjoyable time. The characters weren't particularly interesting but they were neat. There's a blind Force-sensitive ninja guy. Neat. There's a reprogrammed Imperial droid. Neat. There's a guy who's done some bad things for the Rebellion in the past. Neat. And that's pretty much it in terms of "character." The cast is fun to watch, but never engaging in any meaningful way. They don't feel like real people like the characters of the original trilogy or TFA. That's why Star Wars is so great in the first place. Yeah, the action is cool and it'll entertain you, but that can only take you so far.

My biggest problem with it is that it's a missed opportunity. Despite the third act being completely thrilling and it's hands down the best part of the movie, it could have been so much more.

Spoiler (click to read)

The death of all the characters would have been the most emotional part of any Star Wars movie, but it's just not. I give points to the movie for taking a chance and doing it in the first place, but we never connected with them, so their deaths mean nothing. The first two acts are so focused with talking about the plot and "HEY LOOK IT'S ANOTHER STAR WARS THING THAT YOU RECOGNIZE" that it drops the ball in terms of connecting with the characters.

Ranting aside, it's a perfectly mindless ride that's still passable.
