Topic: BFCU Superhero Season Challenge

What’s that, up in the sky? Is it a bird? A plane? No, it’s the next big superhero phenomenon! With so many superhero movies coming out over the summer, it seems like there's never been a better time to wear your underwear on the outside.

From May 22nd to June 27th, your task is to create a 2 to 5 minute superhero short, introducing an entirely new hero to the world! It can be an origin story, a paranormal investigation, or even a final battle where your hero's mettle is well and truly tested. What does it mean to be a superhero? That's for you to decide!

As per my usual, this challenge is part of the BrickFilm Cinematic Universe, an integrated continuity for brickfilms, but you don't need to worry about that when making your entry. What it means is that all entries will be put into a BFCU playlist, and in the future there may be a chance for BiM to form its own JLA/Avengers/[insert team name here]...

Requirements
First off, you have to design a costume, and then post your minifig to this thread. You may choose your superhero's powers but they cannot be reality warping or omnipotence. Be sensible, people. Don't make a Beyonder or a Martian Manhunter.

Here is a list to inspire you. Please note that you do not have to choose a power set from this list, this is just meant to be inspiration. Your character could teleport, make energy constructs, be able to shrink or grow, or even just explode and reform somewhere else - it's up to you.

  • Super strength, invulnerability and a battering-ram head

  • Super speed, intangibility (moving through objects) and x-ray vision

  • Flight and fireballs

  • Laser vision and force-fields

  • Super tunneling, rock skin and super strength

  • Animal shapeshifting (this includes dinosaurs - don't laugh)

  • Cyborg body, laser arm and computer interfacing

  • Freezing/ice manipulation

Need more inspiration? Take a peek at this.

Every superhero needs a villain too - make your villain and post them to the thread, but you are free to give them any powers you like as long as it is not the same as the hero, and does not involve controlling space, time or reality. Be creative, and wow your audience - after all, superhero movies are foremost about spectacle.

Moderate violence is allowed - this is a superhero challenge, after all - but gore and bad language are strongly discouraged. Keep it PG-13 please, although this is not a firm rule.

Somewhere in your entry - at the beginning, the end, it doesn't matter - please put the words 'Made for the BFCU Superhero Season Challenge. There is no official logo, so you can add the text in any way you like.

Winners
Yeeeeeaaaaah about that. This is a Challenge rather than a Contest, and as such there are no prizes (unless someone wishes to donate something). 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will all be chosen from the entries, and I am discussing finding a way to 'display' the 1st prize winner somewhere in recognition of the accolade.

Really, this is just for fun. Loads of us love making superhero brickfilms, what with the rise of the LEGO Super Heroes line, and this seems like a great opportunity for us to take what we know of superhero cinema's stereotypes and tropes and forge something with our own individual stamps on them.

If you have any questions please comment below, and I look forward to seeing what superheroes people come up with!

Re: BFCU Superhero Season Challenge

If this isn't a LEGIT contest then I'd recommend this be moved to "General Film Discussion" as that is the place where challenge threads are.

Contests usually have some sort of sponsor, prize and list of judges on the board.

As for the theme...I think there are more than enough super hero Brickfilm's. Why not do something, maybe, original?

A Life? Cool! Where can I download one of those from?

Re: BFCU Superhero Season Challenge

Well, there's already the 2015 contest which is pretty cool... and most lego superhero films feature trademarked characters, this offers some creativity.

To answer those questions, I've been discussing this and other short challenges with the other mods for some time now, but if one of them asks me to move it then I shall defer to them. There are plenty of non-'legit' contests in this forum, however.

As for 'originality', this is about inventing a superhero of your own. If you'd like to discuss originality any further, please visit the appropriate thread.

Re: BFCU Superhero Season Challenge

Is there any particular reason for the pre-defined power sets? I agree that suggestions are handy to get ideas flowing but picking from a list feels limiting and a little surprising if creativity and invention is what this challenge is about.

Well the intention with that was twofold: the powers being second to the superhero's identity would encourage character-building, and it was also meant to ensure that people don't just pick the same powers or go for a power set that's incredible over-powered (like Martian Manhunter, or the Beyonder).

However, if there are enough complaints, I will change it.

Re: BFCU Superhero Season Challenge

I like them because they force you to think within bounds, but still in a way that is creative and perhaps more outside of the box. Like the Ten Lines contest did. (Anybody else remember that? I thought the idea was pretty sweet.) It's not like you have to use all of the powers in each set either. I'd so go with the unconventional rock-tunneling just to see what I could do with it.

Plus there's that bit Jampot said about concentrating on the character perhaps a bit more than simply the powers. Since so many heroes are just defined by their power set, this gives you a chance to shake things up a bit.

Were it not for other projects, I'd consider entering somebody to expand Captain Obvious' universe. Then I could officially link my Ax/CO films into the BFCU, have a bigger world, and still have fun making a superhero film that's somewhat original.

Plus, something like this can provide much needed motivation in a fun and friendly competition.
What's not to love?

Re: BFCU Superhero Season Challenge

Seems like a great concept, it's always nice to have a BiM summer contest. Although, I'm siding with, jay, here on the list. I feel that the items on the list should not be requirements, but rather suggestions.

Het, my printer sucks so I can't print out the decal for my superhero. Can I upload the image of my superhero and her decal separately? I don't know what I'm gonna do in the video though, maybe I'll add it digitally or maybe my dad will fix the printer or something. mini/blankexpression

If it's the decal you're definitely going to use, then of course! For the video itself, if worst comes to worst and you can't print it on, don't try to add it digitally. Just use a plain torso and we'll imagine that the decal is on. Hope your printer gets fixed!

Alright, thanks. Maybe for the video I will try to not show the torso as much as possible.

Re: BFCU Superhero Season Challenge

I feel this guy might be stretching the "regular human with no powers, but has some skill that sets them apart" but this is Medieval Man.

Medieval Man's power is that he has a magic sword that he an use to summon a small group of medieval soldiers, plus a set of medieval armor for himself.

Hope this is allowable.

I feel this is more urban fantasy than superhero, but is totally acceptable. Please play up the supervillain a bit though.

This looks very intriguing. We might just work something out for this.

Re: BFCU Superhero Season Challenge

Does it really have to be a requirement to pick a power from the list? I think it would be much better creativity-wise if you let entrants pick their own power(s).  I've got an idea that would be cool to for this, but I think it would turn out much better if I can make up my own power.

Re: BFCU Superhero Season Challenge

Due to participant feedback, I've updated the rules. The power list is no longer compulsory - just a list to give you inspiration.

Re: BFCU Superhero Season Challenge

Can I have a co-writer?

Re: BFCU Superhero Season Challenge

You may indeed. Also, Mighty Wanderer made some valid questions about the BFCU, so I came up with this:

In the BFCU, the universe is made of bricks, though not all made of plastic. For instance, the bricks used to make the side of a cliff-face are made of rock, while pieces of a car are metal bricks. Nobody really questions how or why the universe is made this way, but some scholars believe it was constructed by an ancient race known as the Celestial Builders.

A minifigure’s life-force is known as the Creation Spark, like in the LEGO Universe game.

Minifigures see themselves as all one piece, so in order to put on clothes, they are just seen to go on top of the minifigures body (even though when animating, you would exchange the plain yellow torso for the clothed torso). This avoids any weirdness of a minifigure disassembling him/herself. The same goes for headwear - the hair still exists underneath.

Cool! Does this mean you aren't using The Flame? Or are they a duo of crimefighters?
