Yep, Rsteenoven said it. The Snowball is a great mic. I use it and so do many other brickfilms. I also hear the Snowball iCE is good, but it doesn't have the switches on the back. I'm not sure of quality differences though. I'm pretty sure that Squid uses the iCE and it sounds great.

Eehh ok, I guess it's not terribly cheap. But it's one of the cheapest you can really find that has good quality. At least, as far as I know (I'm not terribly versed in mics to be honest).

I've personally used this mic before, and it's got good sound quality also: https://www.amazon.com/CAD-U37-Condense … B001AIQGUO

You probably won't find a good mic for twenty dollars or anything, you have to invest a bit. iPhone mics aren't terrible, to be honest, so if you're in a squeeze and need a mic and have an iPhone, use it.

I'd recommend the iCE also since I've heard it (but not used it). The only difference between it and the normal snowball (besides the price) is that is records only one mode, the equivalent of Mode 1 on the Snowball, meaning that it picks up vocals decently well but not much else. However, from my use of the Snowball, I don't like the Mode 1 because it seems muffled, which is why I can't completely recommend it.

If you're looking for SUPER cheap, I've heard this Marantz Professional Pod Pack 1 is amazing for the price. Plus, a respectable microphone reviewer on YouTube had great things to say about it. Here is a link to his video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_pnJAH7y_E&t=125s

If you're willing to spend around $70, I'd recommend the Audio-Technica ATR 2100. I'm not quite sure how it would directly compare to the blue snowball, as it is a different type of microphone (it's dynamic, not a condenser).

Fancypants uses a similar mic (a Samson Q1U, I believe) in his videos.

Another option for you would be to go all-in on a Zoom Recorder such as the Zoom H1.
The price might be above your budget at 99 USD, but as it does not need to be plugged in to a computer to work, you can use it in the field for recording sound effects as well.
I have not personally used a Zoom Recorder as a desktop mic, but I have used it to record sound on multiple semi-professional live-action shorts. It is quite easy to use and the quality is of professional standards, but of couse the price is as well mini/smile

Re: What's a good but cheap USB mic?

I've got the Samson Q2U, and it's decent, it's got a fairly neutral sound, and does what I need it to.

If for some freakish reason you already have a USB XLR interface, Andrew Huang did a review of This Mic
and it was surprisingly good. (don't try to use it with the included 3mm cable as the sound will be bad)

I've used (and like) the zoom H1 as well, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend you go out and buy one for brick-filming unless you want to make your own ambient sounds, as the stereo XY pair of mics isn't the best for recording a single voice in a studio (i.e. bedroom), they're better suited to location sound recording.  It has however been indispensable for recording peoples lines or instruments in places where I couldn't/didn't have more complicated/larger equipment.

Thanks Guys!

Re: What's a good but cheap USB mic?

I bought the Snowball iCE, refurbished, and a pop filter for about $50. No regrets. The power cord does have a tendency to come loose, but that's a minor defect for such a great product.

Buying refurbished is a great way to go in my experience, and something I'd suggest looking into, because you generally get the same quality product for less than it would cost brand new.

This is (in my opinion) the most bang for your buck. For just a few dollars you get an amazing quality USB mic.
