Topic: Canon shutter clicking at power on and off and every 15 seconds

I just got a canon 40d on ebay and when I turn it on or off, open or close the battery door, or plug it into the computer via usb, the internal reflex mirror is clicking. Also happens randomly but not regularly about every 10-15 seconds.

I've tested it with the lens off to be sure, and it is in fact the hinged mirror flipping up and back down, very quickly. The shutter count as estimated by EOSInfo.exe doesn't seem to be changing with these clicks, only when I actually shoot a picture.

Other than that, it seems to work ok, but it worries me that this mechanical part is going to wear itself out for no reason. Any ideas what this is, and if I can do anything about it? Or should I rush over to the ebay returns dept?

That's how a DSLR works. The only thing that sounds odd is the every 10-15 seconds part. Can you provide a little more information about that. Does are you connected to USB while it is doing that? Is live view enabled?

Re: Canon shutter clicking at power on and off and every 15 seconds

I contacted the seller henrys.com and said basically what I posted above. I didn't ask for a return, just advice. They were very gracious about it. They immediately replied that it sounded like the camera is no good and offered a complete refund and told me to keep the camera because shipping it back would be too expensive. I'll continue to research the problem, hopefully it's something that can be repaired cheaply/easily enough.

Can you make a video if it happening, and show it from more than one angle? That may help. Sometimes these things are just glitches.

Re: Canon shutter clicking at power on and off and every 15 seconds

I tried to get some footage of the thing happening, as you suggested Ben. I don't know if this really shows much, since it goes by so fast.

The shutter behind the mirror is not opening, just the mirror flipping up and quickly back down again, at random times.

I suppose I could remove the mirror altogether since I only plan on using this camera for stop-motion, although I'd prefer to solve the problem if possible.
