I would have guessed Training Day if you didn't say book. Might need another sentence or hint.

Fahrenheit 451! By Ray Bradbury. Fantastic book, haven't read it in ages. The mind altering substances are the books. And his wife loves the dramas (sorry if that's not what they're called, it's been a while since I read it.) But he is beginning to question his role as a "fireman." These firemen are the law enforcement officers in the context of information from books. Is that the book thistof?
