Could easily be done, but they are rather large and would require a large set for a decent shot.

I have done before but there was no set involved.
Unfortunately the footage is lost, but I can tell you the results were almost satisfying.
I've made a few forays into the bionicle/Exo Force/mecha robot animation techniques, and I figured out that the greatest trick to animating it successfully is to use lots of sticky tack and use sturdy rigs to support your figures.
Animating isn't the real problem though, the real problem is the background set. It's very hard to make a cool set that's big enough to not run out of room. It's doable, for example, you could make an epic fight on your computer desk or on your kitchen table or maybe even your floor (warning: strong language). It's all really up to how much resources you have.
