Topic: NaNoWriMo 2008

Well, it's now September which means that November is just around the corner.

For those not familiar already with NaNoWriMo, it is basically an exercise in getting people writing.

Brief Summary of NaNoWriMo: (skip if you are already familiar with it) In the month of November, one sits down and writes a fifty thousand word novel - in thirty days. It sounds like a lot, but it's not that hard. The most difficult part is usually getting started. It's basically just hammering out 1,612 words a day - or about seven pages. The goal is to go for quantity, not quality. More information available on the site.

So, I'm starting to get ready for this year's contest. Anybody else going to throw their hat in the ring?

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008

Sounds like it could be quite interesting, although I wish it would have happened back in August when I had nothing to do for a month. Now that I'm back at school I think any spare time will go into my films...

Well, there is nothing stopping someone from doing it at any time that they wished. Half the fun of NaNoWriMo is knowing that there are thousands of other people struggling along with you.

Most major population centers have groups of people who get together to do these things.

I've been doing other things, mainly live-action film making. I'm still around, I just haven't posted here in a while.

I'm probably gonna give it a go i have lots of ideas jumbled in my head and it's a good way to get them out.

I'm going to do it. I wasn't aware of it until half-way through last time, so I skipped it. I'm pretty excited for this.

I started a novel last year, but I'm a perfectionist so I naturally go for quality over quantity, leaving me with about 10,000 words at the end. I may try again if I have enough time to organize my thoughts beforehand.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008

Ha, I'm still working on my NaNo 2007 novel! I just now got past 50,000 words in about the last month or so, but this is going to be a really awesome story once I get finished with it. If you're thinking that this is something dumb, keep in mind that even if you don't make the deadline (like me) you can still potentially end up with a good manuscript to show people if you're into that kind of stuff.

As for actually entering, I don't know. I may or may not; most likely I won't be able to finish like last year, seeing as I don't have tons of spare time during the school year to do stuff like this. Heck, I'll probably still be writing this one, which I do intend to finish. I'll be sure to post it here when it's done!

I feel the same way. For some reason I just can't make myself write quickly. Every word has to sound just right.

I've got a idea in my head, but I like quality. So I'm not doing this one.

I didn't quite make it last year. (I missed by 27000 words tongue) I'll be entering this year.

Sorry, I'm a quality guy. Not that big a fan of the quantity, like some. *cough*J.K.Rowling*cough*

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008

J.K Rowling did a fairly good job. Admittedly her writing isn't the best, but the storytelling is pretty awesome IMO.

I definitely won't be doing this, as I have several college essays, a short film, and a full course load already.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008

Keep in mind that you don't necessarily have to keep it strictly quantity-ized forever. Part of the process is going back and editing later to make it into a quality piece of work. A lot of people end up publishing their finished stories with this.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008

On the subject of J.K. Rowling, Orson Scott Card pointed out a while ago how his book, Ender's Game which came out first, and Harry Potter are very similar.

It's like the second or third paragraph. I actually like the Ender series better than Harry Potter, mostly because I like Sci-Fi.

Back on the subject of NaNoWriMo, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to enter. I want to finish my music video, a possible Halloween film, and DC3 before the end of the year, and I just won't have time to write a novel.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008

I don't think I'm going to enter either. I don't have any ideas, and I want to work on a new film. Plus, Rock Band 2 comes out on the 18th, and that will probably suck up the rest of my time until the end of the month. Maybe I'll get something started though.

For those who prefer quality over quantity and want to write - how much have you written recently? big_smile

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008

Well, I'm developing an idea I had. I haven't actually written anything yet, but I have been reading a lot of books on how to write books.

So I guess you could say I'm a semi-active writer.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008

Ooh - only half a month left to go!

I've had a few ideas about what to write but discarded most. I think I might just start typing on November 1st and see what happens. I'm going for more of a free-flow "stream of consciousness" deal this year. Unless I change my mind in the next sixteen days.

Also, I've found out about a few places doing write-ins here in my local city - that should be fun.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2008

I'm having second-thoughts.

I can't really get a concrete idea down. I have a fantasy idea that I'll probably end up using if I do this, but I'm not very interested in it. I'd much rather write some kind of weird/mysterious/strange novel that I enjoy writing. But I can't think of anything like that.

The good thing about the fantasy idea is that I'll be able to write a lot about it.

I also don't really want to waste all of November...
