Septemberfest 2020 is upon us! That means it's time for some CONTESTS! Every year, we celebrate Septemberfest in our hearts, as a celebration and appreciation of both the so-called best brickfilm of all time as well as the brickfilming community as a whole. But this year... we have TWO CONTESTS to celebrate with!

Animation Contest

First is the Septemberfest Animation Contest! This is similar to many Bricks in Motion contests in that you are to make a brickfilm related to the contest theme. You can learn more about this on the Contest Announcement Page.

Photography Contest

As a side contest to the main Septemberfest event, we have the Septemberfest Photography Contest! In this, you can take a photo that tells a story related to the theme of the contest, and enter it for the chance to win a cool prize! You can learn more about this on the Contest Announcement Page.

Prizes

The prizes for this year's Septemberfest contest prize pool are generously provided by The LEGO Group via the LEGO® Ambassador Network. A huge thank you goes out to them!

BIM 2020 Summer Contest: Fright and Fear

The theme of the 2020 BricksInMotion.com summer contest is Fright and Fear.

The contest will run from July 6th to August 31th. Once again, we have an exciting collection of prizes thanks to our contest sponsors: Dragonframe, Brickstuff and Minifigs.me.

Theme

For this year’s summer contest, we decided to continue with a concept based theme: Fright and Fear. Which means that you can either make a suspenseful film that builds up tension as the killer slowly approaches his unsuspecting victim, or a more supernatural oriented film that shows monsters, beasts, telepathy killers, possessed werewolves or anything that's “paranormal”. We also want to clarify that we're not looking for films based on real life tragedies and events, as the goal of the theme is to celebrate fantasy and suspense in fiction.

BRAWL 2020 Has STARTED!

BRAWL 2020 has Begun!

Brickfilm Rapidly All Week Long or BRAWL, is a contest in which you have ONE WEEK to write, build sets, voice, animate, edit, sound mix, and submit a brickfilm from scratch. Beginning right now, you have one week to do all of that. Any entries not received by June 27, 2020 7:00PM EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) will be disqualified. It’s tough to do, but that’s what makes it fun!

Theme & MOD Elements

The theme for BRAWL 2020 is Preservation. There’s a lot of ways you could take this theme: preserving something literally or figuratively! Get creative! Theme interpretation and story is a big part of the judging criteria, so don’t skimp out on putting thought into this part.

Mods:

The color MOD element is: a GREEN piece connected to or directly touching a BLUE piece. The letter MOD element is the letter 'H'.

All entries must clearly show the BRAWL 2020 logo for three uninterrupted seconds. The logos may be inserted digitally. Several high-quality resolution versions of the BRAWL 2020 logo can be found here.

What is BRAWL?

Brickfilm Rapidly All Week Long or BRAWL is a contest in which you have exactly one week to write, animate, edit, and submit a brickfilm. You can watch a quick overview video of the contest HERE.

Last year we tied the record for amount of entries, and with everyone stuck inside, there’s no reason we can get even more this year!

When Does BRAWL Start?

The contest will start June 21th, 2020 (00:00) BST (British Standard Time) (AKA June 20th at 7:00PM EDT), and will end June 28th, 2020 (00:00) BST (British Standard Time) (AKA June 27th 7:00PM EDT). You will have exactly one week to finish and submit a film. Any entries not received by the end of one week time period will be disqualified.

A thread titled "BRAWL 2020 Starts NOW!" will be posted in the Contest & Festivals forum. The thread will contain the theme, MOD elements, and submission information.

The Rules

The entry must be entirely made and submitted in one week’s time. To prove this, one or both of the MOD elements must be present in every shot (with the exception of fifteen seconds, more information about that below) of your entry.

Your entry must consist primarily of LEGO (or similar building-block toy) stop-motion animation. Live-action, CGI, hand-drawn, or other forms of film or animation may be used to supplement your entry, but stop-motion animation must be the primary focus.

Your entry must consist of at least 30 seconds of stop-motion animation. There is no maximum time limit.

No mature/explicit content is allowed. This includes, but is not limited to: swearing, excessive/gory violence, overt sexual content, and blatant drug references.

You must not make your entry public until the deadline has passed.

The entry you submit to the judges must be the entry made publicly available to everyone else. You cannot create a version of your film that includes the mod element to send to the judges, and then publicly release a second version of your film that has the mod element removed.

Use of copyrighted material (including music) is allowed. Use of copyrighted material will not affect the judging of your entry.

Entries based off of previous copyrighted material (Star Wars, Marvel, Batman, etc.) are allowed, but discouraged. It could affect the judging of your film due to unoriginality.

Because of the limited time frame and because this isn’t a music contest, you are allowed to use music created before the contest, either original music created beforehand or copyrighted music.

Entries must clearly show the BRAWL 2020 logo for three uninterrupted seconds. High quality versions of the logo will be posted by the start of the contest. The logo may be inserted digitally.

The History of Brickfilms: LEGO Studios

Bricks in Motion administrator and longtime community member Penta has released the third part to a series of videos recounting the history of brickfilms. The most recent video LEGO Studios: The major impact of a minor LEGO theme, convers the rich history of brickfilms created with, or inspired by the LEGO Studios line of sets, released in 2000.

The 2000 release of the LEGO Studios Steven Spielberg MovieMaker Set is the clearest turning point in brickfilming history, greatly influencing LEGO animation to become a widely practiced hobby. This video chronicles the history and impact of the LEGO Studios theme, both in regards to brickfilming and in regards to how the theme fits in the overall LEGO canon. It also aims to cover some of the general brickfilming practices and struggles of the era, and features interviews with David Pagano of Paganomation and Kevin Ulrich of BrotherhoodWorkshop, explaining how LEGO Studios helped to influence their hobbies and eventual careers.

Featuring nearly 300 individual brickfilms, this 52 minute documentary is a treat for the eyes and a trip down memory lane for many. Even if you aren't farmiliar with brickfilming, its rich history is enthralling and definitely worth the watch.

Are you ready to Enjoy A Short Transient Event Right-away? Here we go!

I’m excited, and I hope you’re ready for another year of fun, frolicking, and filming.

The deadline for this contest is April 11th, 2020 at 11:59pm (midnight) CST. This means you have a full two weeks to create your entry.

Your entry must be Easter related in some way. They may be sacred or secular, serious or silly. They may be religious if you wish, but must they be Easter related in some way. (They may cover candy, bunnies, flowers, the resurrection, or anything else Easter-y.)

Films must be primarily phyisical stop-motion animation using LEGO bricks or some other LEGO-like construction toy. Films may feature other forms of animation (like Flash, 3D animation, etc), but LEGO stop-motion must to be the main focus.

There is NO TIME LIMIT this year. However, keep in mind that a shorter, more polished film will likely score higher than a rougher, more poorly executed film.

Copyrighted material (music, themes, etc) are allowed, but originality is strongly recommended. Please refer to our Royalty Free Resources Section if you are in need of extra music and sounds.

The film may not contain any mature/explicit content. This includes, but is not limited to: swearing, excessive/gory violence, overt sexual content, and blatant drug references. However, slapstick comedy is allowed.

Only one entry per person will be accepted. If you submit more than one entry, only the last entry will be considered.

Entries must contain the EASTER 2020 image or the text “Made for EASTER 2020” somewhere in the film. You may download the image here. (If you want, you may also include the Bricks in Motion logo but that is not required.)

Also, please mention our sponsor, Minifigure Madness, in the film credits. They have been generous enough to provide the prizes and it is only right that we give them the credit.

THE “NEW TWIST” RULES

This year, instead of being limited to 20 second entries as most EASTER contests have done, we are reaching way back and channeling the awesomeness of an old contest, the “10 Brick Contest.”

Therefore, your films may only make use of up to 10 bricks/elements in the entirety of the film. Not 10 on screen at once, but ten total. Period. (You may use less than 10 if you prefer.) Minifigures are also banned.

You may also use baseplates for your floor, and a non-Lego background if you wish, which will not count towards your 10 brick limit.

Welcome to the EASTER Contest!

Are you ready to Enjoy A Short Transient Event Right-away?

Flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and the sun is shining! It’s springtime; it’s Easter time! Which means another BiM contest is here to keep you holed up in a small, dark room all day. Which, all things considered, is probably a good idea right now.

Once again, I’m privileged to host EASTER, (I did it 7 years ago…how time flies!) which has recently been upgraded to an official Bricks in Motion contest. I’m excited, and I hope you’re ready for another year of fun, frolicking, and filming too.

EASTER 2019 will begin on March 28 and end April 11.

You have two full weeks to complete and submit your film.

THE RULES:

EASTER is a wonderful contest for a wonderful time of year. It’s always a load of fun and the specific quirks of this contests always give rise to unique and creative films. This year, however, things will be a little different, so be prepared for a new twist. This year, EASTER will not be limited by the usual 20-second time limit, but a very different limit. This will allow some new avenues of creativity that create some very unique films.

So stay turned, don't build anything yet, and keep your eye out for the contest announcement thread for the rest of the details.
