Re: Malheur

I'm not much of a reviewer, but I'll try and write out how good this was:

Everything was really well done, and it was obvious how well they were done. Lighting and music in particular were really really good.
And facial animation was very well done, too. The animation itself was also impressive. For example, during the "20 Years Later" title, you were animating about ten people, plus cars. And all the people seemed to have their own personality (kinda). The two people talking to eachother over the balcony was nice.

The story was top notch too, which would have been hard to accomplish due to the fact that not many words were spoken, as I noticed only the newscaster had lines. When it was revealed that the man was their child] I was like "omg wow". The whole story fitted together, and everything made sense, but the "twist" wasn't obvious or foreseeable.

So basically, wow.

Re: Malheur

That was some of the most eerie music I have ever heard, but it fit in well with the video. The animation was great but I think the real winner was the shoot angles.
The actually story was great as well, I have to say I wasn't expecting the ending.

Re: Malheur

Instant classic
Altough some little technical improvements possible, and I'm just not gonna wine about that.
This film. This film is just briljantly told with almost no words and a great eye for cinematography.
The story had a great twist which I didn't tought of. The french title's made it look very classic for some reason (it looks good).
The music fitted well and made it more atmospheric.

5/5 because I don't care about lightflickers!

''You don't have to tell him how great is coffee is man!''

Re: Malheur

Other than just a few lightflickers, that was amazing. The music and colors (or almost lack there of) really brought out that eerie darker aspect to the film. Having little words also added to the effect. If done right I almost like wordless films better.

Overall: 5/5
Story: 4.5/5 I don't really know how this could be improved specifically, but it just sort of lacked something to it.
Animation: 5/5 I think that's going on my favorite list of best animation
Cinematography: 5/5 great camera movements, a few different angles from what most use
Sound: 5/5 the music was amazingly eerie mini/wink

Re: Malheur

I loved it. This was magic to my eyes. When I first saw the trailer, I thought it was good (I think I even favorited it), but I'm blown away by how awesome this is.

The audio and music fit in well, and had a clear sound with no background noise, and the enormous set designs were great. I also liked the credits at the end and the color grading to make everything look "bleached out." It gave the film a nice look that fit the mood well. The digital faces were also quite amazing.

However, I think that sometimes the animation was a bit rough, and not as smooth as it could have been, and there could have also been muzzle flashes when the man shot the gun instead of just gun sounds.

Apart from that, it was a great film. mini/smile

If you can get vik to capitalise something, it must be good.

I'm back. Possibly.

Re: Malheur

This was truly a fantastic film. Great animation, lighting, set design, and story. The mouth effects, I felt, could of been a bit better however. At times you could really tell they were CG. I liked the music, it worked really well and created the fantastic mood that was there for the whole film. And you just might be one of the few people who can actually make a creepy brickfilm.

Overall, this is for sure going to be known as a brickfilm classic. Wonderful job. 4.8/5

Into the darkness once more. I walk into the unknown. To a far better life than I've ever known.

Re: Malheur

Looks like I'm the first one to chalk up a negative review.

Animation, camera work, sound design - all very good, and though the music might be a bit repetitive to some, I liked it. As a whole the film conjures up a lot of suspense.

However, the story doesn't have a lot of meaning or intrigue. In general the audience sits and waits twice through the while film for the killer to shoot his victim(s). There isn't a lot of personality to any of it, no character change.

Compare it to Cognizance. (which isn't fair, I know, but bear with me) Cognizance's general idea is similar - we're waiting for the killer to shoot his victim. But Cognizance is completely based around a character change, and so in the end when someone does get shot (nearly identical visual ending to your own) it means something personal to the audience, whereas yours was just a bland tragedy. Cognizance contrasts emotional moods (dark story vs. music, emotion) while yours was consistently dark.

I just feel like it needed a lot more complexity to be anything more than a five-and-a-half minute people-get-shot story. I enjoyed it, and it has great technicals, but it's certainly not a "brickfilm classic."

PS: Run your shots through a deflicker plugin to bring down the light flicker.

Re: Malheur

I liked it, even if I didn't love it.  The technical work is great other than the mouth animation at time, but seriously the visual style of this film is pretty cool and probably the highlight for me.  I liked all the lightning montages (I feel like there's a more correct term for those; really fast edits of brief shots) and they gave the film some distinction in style editorially as well.  The story seems a little deliberately ambiguous, I enjoyed that.

Like The River, this doesn't follow a totally conventional narrative structure.  I hate to make that comparison because this isn't much like The River, but it's simpler for the purpose of discussing this kind of approach to storytelling in brickfilms.  I wouldn't want to see lots of brickfilms with this kind of ambiguity to the story and editing, but I like it as an occasional change of pace.

Re: Malheur

*bump*
Wow, I really enjoyed that, the Cinematography in this was amazing, and the animation was almost flawless, but I agree with Leo, the story was not amazing, the ending was weak, the son just getting shot, not much too that.  Until that point I really enjoyed it, but that part was quite bland, it needed something to cause an emotional change in the viewer, but I sat unmoved, blandly staring at the credits.
The music was very fitting, the flashbacks were intriguing, but the ending felt very blah, and i thought it needed something more, like Leo said, character change, maybe in the shooter, maybe some withdraw before he shoots the son, some reason to believe that the son might live, and then he dies, and some reason for us to remorse not sure if that's the right word over his death.

Re: Malheur

That wasn't a bump, you cannot bump film threads.

I found the film to have a surprise ending, as most films of this type end with the hero killing the villain. This film was very depressing, I congratulate you. Keep it up!

Re: Malheur

After reading the review I was expecting a lot. 9 for animation and sound? It's a great little film with style which didn't really meet my expectations. Beauty is in the eye of the reviewer, at least it wasn't Leo (Cyclic).

Re: Malheur

The new reviewers are still learning the ropes.  I agree that the ratings on this one were too high, was going to let it slide this time but perhaps it could be adjusted.

Wow, I think I almost peed my pants. That was crazy amazing. It's one of those films that make you get scared. Congratulations on creating a scary film with a child's toy. mini/bigsmile

And you can, if they are really old, that would be considered a bump, like the oldest release, that would be a bump

Re: Malheur

umm, yeah, that would be a bump, considering it was made forever ago, the creator most likely doesn't want feedback anymore.
But lets stop filling this thread with pointless posts about bumping. mini/wink
