Topic: The Squire and the Scroll

http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/BuilderBrothers/tSatS/tsatslogo.png

This is the update thread for our upcoming film "The Squire and the Scroll."  Our movie is an adaptation of the story by Jennie Bishop (more info on the book can be found here).  Here we will be regularly posting pictures and short clips from our progress.  We have been in the pre-production stage of this film for over a year now, but we finally started animating this week.

This will be our best work in every aspect, from script to VFX and from cinematography to lighting.  We are filming the movie with a Cannon Rebel T2i, and the final film will be available in 1080p.  The estimated length of the film is 30 minutes.  There will be an original score, and we are going to make most (if not all) of the sound effects ourselves.

Production Facts:
2.39:1 aspect ratio
15 FPS
Fully Original Score
275 lbs. (approx.) of LEGO
30 Minutes (approx.)

Equipment:
Canon Rebel T2i
Sigma 24mm f/2.8 Super Wide II Macro lens (with Nikon mount) – used for wide angle shots
Nikon Micro-Nikkor 55 mm f/3.5 lens – used for close-up shots
Ordinary household lamps (with diffused lighting)

Software:
Frame Capture: Canon EOS Utilities (comes with the camera)
CGI: Cinema 4d
Effects: After Effects
Audio: Audacity
Modeling: LEOCad

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

This looks cool. Quality does look nice.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Good work you two, the atmospheres are almost pristine, I would just make the lighting in the first shot a bit warmer. Remember, when dealing with color, the mood should reflect the lighting, cold lighting like in the second shot for dark and dreary scenes, warm lighting for surreal and happy/grand shots.

Thanks RealBrick. mini/smile  The reason that the first screen-shot seems a bit cold is that it is not a happy scene, since the king is trying to motivate his troops after a desperate battle (which they lost).  The shot also occurs first thing in the morning.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

I'm excited about this. Love the pictures and can't wait for more! About how many seconds have you animated?

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

!!!!!!!!
THIS LOOKS SO AMAZING!!! mini/bigsmile
I've longed for an epic medieval brickfilm for a very long time. So much that I've planned one out myself, but won't be able to make it for a really long time due to "I Am The Night" mini/tongue

So, I'm glad you're making one. mini/smile

The lighting and set design looks phenomenal. Very nice quality. I'd say the same with the lighting.

This definitely looks like it really could be your best work ever. As your animation is getting quite nice, and it may even improve during the production of this, and the fact that you've spent a year in pre-production sounds promising for being well executed.
I'm a little bit skeptical of how this is going to turn out being 30 minutes long, as many long brickfilms turn out a bit slow at times, and lack in many aspects of quality, but, it looks as if that won't be slow. mini/smile Just make sure to keep up the interest, and make sure to keep the punches rolling (literal punches, fighting, punch lines, interesting plot twists, and all that jazz).

I like that you're doing an original score, brickfilms need more of those, but what even more impresses me is doing all the sound effects.
mini/delirium
More brickfilms should be done that way. And I'm not sure anyone has besides me. I hope you record all of them, That makes it more original. Also, if you'd like any suggestions for sound design and editing, I hope you consult me, I having years of experience making all of my sound effects. And once you see How to Not Rob a Bank, I think you shall be quite impressed with how far I've come.

Last thing, what's your rough estimate on how long this will take?
I'd really like to know, I'm really exited about this now. xD But I know brickfilms never seem to come out when you want them to. He he

Good luck. mini/smile

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Oh my gosh this looks epic! mini/bigsmile I'm sure it will be a Brickfilm classic.

I'm working on getting my studio back up and running, so stay posted...

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Looks really nice guys!

It's awesome to see how much you two have improved in your brickfilm quality over only about a year.

Can't wait to see this.

Might I ask, since I'm thinking of purchasing a Rebel t2i myself, I was wondering if it works fine with monkeyjam.
Does it have remote capture or do you take the pictures manually and import them to your stop-motion software?

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

I'm very pleased to see some many good projects emerging from brickfilmers both new & old(ish), and this one is no exception. Dazzling shots - especially the second one in particular, the T2i's depth of field is as wonderful as usual.

By a matter of fact, actually, what lenses do you have for your camera?

I'll be back animating soon! Exams and computer faults are keeping me away </3

Great looks! I can't wait. I've always loved your guys' films. Good luck!

So yeah, I'm back from my mind.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

This sounds pretty fantastic. The world needs more Brickfilms like this. I know most people don't have the time or motivation to make longer Brickfilms, and most of the ones that do get made seem to be lacking in quality, so it's cool to see someone who's actually pretty good making a longer film. Those shots look great, also.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

very nice guys, i'm excited to see this! i love the smoke or fog effect in the 2nd picture mini/bigsmile

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys!

We have animated very little (around 12 seconds), but that is only because we just started and are just getting used to using a digital camera instead of a webcam.

As VanderFlame said, we hope to release it by March 2012.

MadBrick wrote:

There is a free program that comes with it (called EOS Utility) that allows you to take pictures through the computer and save them there as well.  Though not meant to be an animation software and not as good as Monkey Jam, it works for our needs.

We are actually just using the standard "EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens" that comes with the camera.

Once again, thanks for all the positive feedback guys, and we hope to continue posting screenshots every week or so.

*Weekly Update*

In the past week, we have animated about another 20 seconds of footage as well as gotten together with a very talented composer that is writing the music for this film.  Since we don't want to post another screenshot quite yet, here are some behind-the-scenes pics:

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

What can I say, amazing, just amazing.  The set looks great, the Rebel t2i makes me jealous/drool.

This will definitely shape up to be a great brickfilm.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

This looks like it's going to be really really good. I can't wait for this, looks seriously awesome.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

What purpose do those green boards serve?
I'm curious.

Re: The Squire and the Scroll

I think it's to prevent outside light to enter the set. I do that a lot with baseplates and cardboard.
