Topic: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

mini/madhead I'm sick of searchin the web for free programs that turn out to be what you expected. I have a dream that a program will be out there for those cheapskates, beginners, and those who do not have a million dollars.
Now, I'm not a programmer, but I know the standards every brickfilmer needed. But I need a team of volunteers who share this dream. As a unit, and as fellow brickfilmers, let's get together and make an EXCELLENT QUALITY, FREE, POWERFUL, and the BEST program  for all brickfilmers to embrace.:D It will be by BiM, for others!  Now, who's with me?

1/16/2013 EDIT: Hmm... a lot of things changed since I wrote this, heheh. That rant sounded a bit harsh to say, and some hobbyist programmers decided to do this for some fun and challenge. I happened to start learning programming, also. (C, of course) So, lets do this.

3/28/13 EDIT: repellingspider has offered his talents to create the splash, icons, etc! Welcome aboard, repellingspider! (Remember me?... mini/bigsmile )

CyberCom- Manager- Graphics
CwStudios- (Lead?) Programmer
Tenny1028- Programmer
Blue Phoenix- Graphics (code supervisor?)
Caveman Inc.- Programmer "
repellingspider- Graphics Artist
I need all who are in the project to email me at [email protected]. Also, any newer members who would like to join (or if beta testing is available) email me there.

1/18/2014 EDIT: The program has been named Biscuit, and the working repositories are located here. Progress has stagnated over the last 10 months; if you are interested in contributing, Tenny1028 is currently working on the Mac version, so contacting him is likely a good place to start.

Re: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

Ummm, what's wrong with all the free ones? Sure, some are a lot better than others, and some have more/different features, but just find the right one for your needs and you're good to go.

I've never had an issue with MonkeyJam, and with the exception of not having onion skinning, it's perfect.

Re: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

If I were to program a stop motion program, that would probably take a LONG time to develop, I would most certainly want to be paid, not volunteer. It is difficult work. I created a webcam program, and had it save the pictures to my hard drive, but that was just 'the basics'. Even if we did try, how would it compare to all of the already free programs? Those are perfectly fine to use, and I don't see what's wrong with them.

mini/blankexpression Oh, no... This was supposed to be a team project, and we're getting bogged...

I have nothing against free programs; (I appreciate them!). I was just implementing, why not create a one stop and shop animation software for free? For the community of brickfilmers? BiM's own software?:|

If BiM has the same number of contributors and programmers that open-source software like Blender does, then it can be done.

Have you tried this?

Well, I've heard of it, and I've seen good things done with it, but the only prob is that I don't have a webcam, as it wont open up without one. But thanks for suggesting. (Speaking of webcams, which Logitech one is the cheapest, anyway?):)

That's what I'm trying to say, man! Although most people probably don't know much programming( I don't, but I wish I did.) mini/smile  Btw, I heard of you from one forum; I just can't remember...

Re: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

I totally support the idea... I only wish there was someone or some company out there who made a hi-spec, fully Mac-compatible and non biased *death stares at Logitech* webcam. mini/smile

Re: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

:)Yes. If we made the program, it would need to be cross platform, so everybody could use it.

Re: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

I like the idea, and if we get some programmers to help us, this may work well.
I am not a programmer myself, though, but I know what the program would need.

Re: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

What it would need is an in built editor, an internal/external image manipulator,(it would load up GIMP or Photoshop), a frame editor where you can extend the pictures to a length(or cut & paste), a special effects editor with tons of filters, import/export common formats, an audio editor and sync tool, etc. Anything else it should have?:/

Re: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

I think you're getting way ahead of yourself. You're asking for a lot, and there is not even an official group for this. Yes, asking for a group to get together and build a program is easy, but actually programming is a nightmare. With so little programmers actually on BiM (a brickfilming website, not developing), the time spent on this would take forever. Without pay, there is no definite guarantee that that everyone is either going to stay or even do their work. Plus, there are many different programming languages out there, so the chance of finding a group that all know the same language is even harder.

Re: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

Hmmmmm. I know (very) basic programming in C#, but this would probably have to be made in C++, at least for a good chunk of it.

Oooh...that burned! Just kiddin.:P  I understand what programming takes, and know that there are thousands of programming languages and codes. The best one would probably be C++ or Javascript.:|
I'm learning Javascript myself and it is complicated. And the teamwork; some people might not want to volunteer their skill. But how do the people who create freeware; if they can accomplish a feat, so could we. I mean, that's the spirit of brickfilming; we're freelancers! (Who might not get paid...)

Re: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

While I do not think you will find to many programmers here on this site, I think a good idea would be to ask around on some programming and software development forums. We brickfilmers have outsourced stuff before. (i.e. Haz getting AcousticBrony to do music for Boom De Ah Dah). I'm sure you will find someone there (though it may take some searching to find a talented enough programmer who is willing to do it for FREE.)

And even before you start outsourcing, I would start charting out exactly what you want in the program (As is done for all professional Software or Video Games). People are more likely to latch on to a project if they know exactly what they need to do from the get go, instead of just making it up as you go along (not saying you cannot change ANYTHING as development goes along, but having an outline will make development go along a lot more smoothly, and save you from a lot of arguments.

Thanks for the tip; I'll see if there are any developers on sourceforge...:)

It prodably is, many well-known programs (like Virtualdub) have s Sourceforge site.

Re: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

If anyone even uses this thread anymore, I support this and know some basic java (still learning) and would be willing to put some effort into this. I don't know anything about how to connect to webcams though. I thought about this myself and drew out a design, never actually tried making it though. If we can get some more help even if its just small things, then I say WHY NOT?

Re: Developers/Programmers Needed! Let's create a stopmotion program!

Pretty small script in python and I had something put together, I think it could work just is it profitable not in money but will it be useful compared to whats out there already.

Proof of concept by cwstudios, on Flickr

though I did this in python I would recommend a different language like java cause it's an oo-programming language Which will be better with algorithms and stuff. If we did this I'd be in.
