Topic: Has Anyone Ever Profited From Their Films?

This is a question that has kept me wondering since the early days of this hobby.
Has any filmer on this site or the former site ever profited (no matter how small or large) off of their films.
Intrigue us with your secret formula to success. Dazzle us with tales of your rise to internet fame.
And make us cry with you all the way to the bank of how you blew your profits on supermodels and fast cars.

Okay, okay...I'm sure that last part didn't happen. Maybe you actually spent your fortune on even more Lego.

Anyway...DISCUSS!!!

Please, please, PLEASE...
No troll-ish comments about forrestfire101 or any other controversial brickyfilm/Youtube personality.
AKA: ff101 suckz, Blunty's a sellout, etc.
Just the facts and nothing but the facts. Thanks.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Profited From Their Films?

Based on what I've spent money on and what little I've produced, I'm $2000+ in the red for this hobby (rendering computers, construction paper, stickytack, camera, and utility).

I sold a few DVDs for $5 each.

My YouTube account is monetised, but I haven't seen a penny of the money because I only get paid for every $60 earned. Thus far I have earnt $15.

I still only make films that I want to make. Sometimes they happen to fit in with what's popular, other times they are totally obscure.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Profited From Their Films?

My film 30 Years: The Story of the Minifigure was commissioned by The LEGO Group. I was contacted by a LEGO rep in early 2008 asking if I wanted to make a short film. Eventually this led to a conference call with some LEGO reps, Blunty, and David Pagano. I was paid $500 and sent a huge box of minifigure parts, which ended up being about 80-100 assembled minifigures (most of which are used in the minifig pyramid near the end of The Story of the Minifigure). I was given complete creative freedom, besides the obvious guidelines (family-friendly, use only LEGO, must be about the minifigure). I mostly spent the money on LEGO sets that appear in the film. It was a great experience, and an excellent last hurrah before I went to college and left the hobby for five years.

I'm also earning (very limited) money from Google Adsense, which have gone right back into investing into new equipment and supplies. Back during my peak viewership, I was getting a check from Google every month. Now I'm lucky if it's every 6 months. But maybe things will change now that I've gotten back into the hobby.

I profit in the joy and smiles I bring to other people.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Profited From Their Films?

I'm in the red, just not sure how much. Or at least I hope I am.
Got about $700 worth of Lego from the Superhero and Santa Yoda contests, but that only served to feed the addiction.
Then scored $1000 from Tongal, but still awaiting my first check from Google.
That being said, I've also sunk several hundred in Bricklink. (Yikes! It was over several years time, but still!)
Not sure how much I've spend overall with software, hardware, and Lego. Probably a lot more than I'd care to figure up.

It's worth it in my eyes, and keeps me out of trouble. What more could you ask?
I'm very happy and satisfied and that's what really matters. It's not all about the money....Right? http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/StevieCollins/smiles/camerathing.gif

Re: Has Anyone Ever Profited From Their Films?

It would be cool to at some point monetize my YouTube channel so I could get some extra money for equipment and LEGO and such. So far, the only "profit" I've made from my films was a very awkward breakfast with the assistant principal of my school for being one of the semi-finalists in the PSA competition (which I made a brickfilm for), and $5 one of my friends bet me that I couldn't finish a film for BRAWL. I used the money to buy a minifig pack and a cinnabon if you're curious.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Profited From Their Films?

I wouldn't mind getting a little extra cash from YouTube. I haven't gotten a penny thus far.

Speaking of monetization, I've had a "copyright claim" that's been going on since August. It still hasn't been cleared up, is there anything I can do?

What was the copyright claim for?
Youtube usually sends you an email detailing about how you are in violation of *insert excuse here*.

I had a copyright claim almost two years ago. It was for the "Imagine That" trailer.
Youtube claimed that the drum beats in the trailer are from a Disney film.
Watched the 'copyright class' video and as long as I didn't get into trouble for six months, the claim was dropped.
I really wanted to fight the copyright claim, but if I did and ended up losing the case...I'm banned from Youtube.
Sucks, but they don't give you too much choice in the matter.

I think it was that the music was copyrighted or something - I sent them proof that it was royalty free and purchased, but they never got back to me.

In my video manager it just says the video is being "reviewed." I don't know what I can do, really.

Re: Has Anyone Ever Profited From Their Films?

They didn't give you an option to post the video without music?
Or to take the copyright class?

Only other thing I can suggest is to search for the original composer and contact him/her.
Have them contact Youtube (if possible).
It might be a way to clear things up.

What was the name of the company or composer?

Re: Has Anyone Ever Profited From Their Films?

I've been commissioned 3 times for online LEGO PR campaigns. Interestingly, LEGO has two PR teams - one for their actual products, and one for their brand. I was working with the brand PR folks, who don't know a thing about LEGO! They found me through an article in the local paper after I'd had a film shown at a film festival.

The first two - Movie Moments and 2012: A Year in Bricks were kind of a pain to work on. I was just given the task of recreating existing things, and I had to do it in a pretty short space of time. I cut a lot of corners to finish them for the deadlines, and the whole process felt pretty stifling. These were put on YouTube, then the PR folks sent press releases to every outlet they knew telling people to go watch them.

More recently I was contacted by the same people to make a brickfilm about ice skating, and I'll probably get told off if I go into any more details. I was given much more creative freedom, and overall it's been a much more fun process. I've finished animating it, and am waiting on them to send me a list of comments and additions before I can release it.

I also made a music video for a LEGO employee who makes music in his spare time. I finished it a couple of months ago and don't know when it's going to appear on YouTube...
