I asked the same question some weeks ago. I'm a big Windows Movie Maker fan because of it's simplicity. Like yourself, mine all of a sudden stopped importing media files - which is obviously a problem.
I found an old version of Sony Vegas and it is the closest thing to WMM I can find with extra power. This means the learning curve for me is minimal.
I spent a whole evening downloading and trialing free non-linear software and I honestly wouldn't go near them. The time I waste on convoluted methods of doing simple edits well surpasses the money I would spend on Vegas. Vegas edit is $399 in my country. I'd use that for a number of years (not joking) so for me it works. You'd have to assess your own position of course.
Edit: Movie Studio 13 is $50 so that might be an option as well.
