This featured brickfilmer post is part of a series of articles highlighting animators who supported the Bricks in Motion Documentary project on Kickstarter.

Lewis Chen (Lechnology) is an animator whose work in the past few years has focused on computer animation. Since he saw The Phantom Menace as a child, Lewis has had an interest in computer animation and visual effects. In 2002, he got into brickfilming in high school when a friend showed him a class project that was created using stop motion and LEGO.

Lewis says his approach is to focus on the story he wants to tell, rather than letting the medium limit him:

"I want to make brickfilms, I just don't have the space or resources to make them. While CG animation opens the door to creativity, I really wanted to make LEGO-based animation so I committed and specialized in CG brickfilms. Plus it was better than being hunched over a table in my attic with hot lamps during the hot summers that I had time to do stop-motion."

He received his bachelor's degree in computer science and masters in Library and Information science. He works as a librarian and has begun to focus on teaching and creating stop-motion animation with teens and tweens.

He sometimes draws on experiences from his life for his films, such as Noir Jambon, which was inspired by a conversation with coworkers. As his career has picked up steam, he has shifted his focus:

"With a full time job now, I have little time to animate. I'm currently focused on writing stories and scripts in my spare time."

Great to see Lechnology featured this week.
Whether it's his 10 Brick Contest entry, the holiday classic 12 Pains of Christmas or any of his CG brickfilms, Lechnology's films have a way of making you stop and think for a moment about what you're just watched. Even the test films are very inspiring and warrant repeated viewings.

Thanks for all of the great brickfilming years. mini/smile
I hope that sometime in the near future that you'll be able to get back into the animator's chair and blow us away with a new film.

I was more familiar with Lechnology from his work on Bricks in Motion than his films. However, after scoring the Game of Brickfilmers Volume 1, I was introduced to just how nice he really was as a person. I also got a little look into the types of films and animation he mastered.

In the months since, I've been checking out his other films all the time! They not only feature top-notch CGI work, but also, can make me laugh in just the right places. mini/smile His brickfilms Stormtrooper is the New Black and The Dark Knight Wises in particular had me laughing.

Looking through his filmography, I noticed that he did some visual effects work on Mirrored Perspective, which, is one of my favorite brickfilms. I was pleasantly surprised to find that out!

No mention of Repent? For shame!

Lewis was a great help when I was making Driven, and he ultimately is responsible for nearly every visual effect in that film. He was always willing to lend his expertise in effects to other brickfilmers.

Btw, that Repent plot summary sounds a lot better than what I actually made or intended to make mini/lol
