Film Scoring

In my opinion, a soundtrack is not just music to lie beneath the "main" feature, or to accompany and emphasise certain parts of the film; a soundtrack should be used to tell a story, show emotion, set a mood and, most of all be an essential piece of the puzzle to making a good film.

A well made film without music is a well made film, but a well made film with well made music is a well made piece of art; to me a film would rarely be complete without music, and that is why composers like us our so essential in the film industry.

This thread is for anyone who like to post their own music, updates on their compositions and to become known as a film scorer on this site.

I hope this thread will be helpful and I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Re: Film Scoring thread

I really like having this thread! As, it gives composers their own thread, away from the Royalty Free Music section, which, has gone a bit off topic before.

However, for anyone looking for composers, or, who want to be "featured" composers themselves, I'd suggest you look to this thread, as, it currently has a list of active composers on Bricks in Motion. (I being one of them) Scroll to the Composers section

I'd also recommend that you should look to join that list as well, Megagill74.

I'll go ahead and kickstart the thread as well. mini/smile

I'm am a Brickfilm composer, having done such in one way or another since 2011. In 2012, I scored my first project for another animator, Pritchard Studios, who's film can be seen here If Rooftops Could Talk. Coincidentally, some of my unused music from that score session was also used in the film's sequel.

My latest composition was a synth-heavy piece for Funmi's Hollow Earth 2.

I totally agree. Though film was originally only a visual medium, and, a director's job should be to style and presentation first - I think that music, if used correctly, can enhance a film's emotional response in a way that could never be achieved by a silent picture!

Re: Film Scoring thread

I listened to some of compositions and they were really good! I did music GCSE too and it was great fun (so much that I'm doing music A level...). I think it would be nice if more brickfilms could have original scores rather than the works of Kevin Macleod...

I think there have been a couple of music sharing threads before, but I like the idea of one purely for film compositions. Perhaps as well as taking requests this thread could be where people's film scores get feedback too.

Re: Film Scoring thread

Awesome! The title really fits the genre as well. I can imagine my favourite heroes doing a pose while the song is being played in the background.

I had my doubts when you said you get A's in music because in my school, music isn't really a thing and my teacher gives out A's to every student (including me). One of my peers composes her own music, she only has one good song and all the others were a bit lame. Anyways, you have lots of talent. Keep up the good work. I am not a music fanatic, but I'll follow your work.

Re: Film Scoring thread

Here's a perfect example of what mixing can do to a song!

This is my original test for my upcoming "Sliders: The Animated Series" theme song:
Original

This is a "remaster" using the exact same recordings, just, different placement and treble/bass effects:
New

The mastering of a song, especially with orchestra and film score pieces, is very important. The original mix sounded way too much like a MIDI, and was a bit too muddy, making it seem "flat." The second mix, on the other hand, is a bit more authentic, and, has much better stereo width.

Also, a little fun fact; the first one had a lot of heavy compression, giving in to the so called 'loudness wars,' whereas the second mix was originally about -23 db at it's loudest. - I tried to get the mix "right" the second time, and then worried about making sure it wouldn't be too quiet.

I think a lot of amateur and 'in-training' film composers could make their music sound much more professional just by spending a bit more time on mixing and mastering their tracks.

Re: Film Scoring thread

I don't really score well, but I do love writing original music for my series!  The 4th episode will include 3 new original songs, (and my character will be singing one that someone else wrote!)

Dyland, I've been mastering for years and I still need practice!

Re: Film Scoring thread

I decided to dust off of an old composition and give it some new spice!

Here is the original piece of music I created for an Adventurers brickfilm I was making.

Personally, I felt that the original was too slow. (I wanted something really upbeat and jumping. Something you'd snap your fingers too, yet, not too fast to understand) Also, my experience with composing for "an orchestra" was little. I didn't really know what I wanted as far as chord structures and mood. I just stumbled my way across the keyboard for the lead, and then did pretty much the same for the accompanying flutes, horns, strings, and drums.

So, for the Redo I decided to change the bass line, and add in little accents with the accompanying instruments. (Specifically the flutes, like at 0:16) It's not perfect, but, it's much better than the original. The sound isn't as "warped" and, would be much more usable for an opening credits sequence.

Re: Film Scoring thread

@If I Were A Minifig Your compositions are really good! I looked at your Soundcloud page, and I really liked your style of composing; sort of a John Williams theme style. I have been attempting to compose with more Orchestral colour like JW, but I've always gone back to the Hans Zimmer chordal style. Do you have any advice and composition techniques? Did you take music for GCSE/Alevel, or is it just a hobby?

Re: Film Scoring thread

Megagill74,
Thanks! I was alternately impressed the quality of your tracks. You have a nice style, a solid ear, and stinking AWESOME synths! In truth, I tend to gravitate to a more Zimmer-esque style as well. He is probably my favorite film composer. Not to underplay the masterful work of JW; the man is a genius. But Zimmer is able to capture emotion and power without making the music unattainable for the average ear. I always feel a little exhausted after listening to a Williams score.

So, advice? I can't say that I have anything to add. Your tracks, particularly the Thirty Year War, were probably more solid than anything I've ever written.

I've had musical training for some time. Private lessons for most of my life. But I much prefer playing by ear, as apposed to playing off of sheet music. So at this point it's really just a hobby. How about you?

Traditional film scoring is one thing I can't do.  I envy your talent, but in  good way.  This is extremely riveting music!

Re: Film Scoring thread

I really like this thread and the samples and pieces that people have posted. But I don't see any discussion about what software everyone uses (if it is done digitally).

I'm really curious because I have yet to find an affordable software that is easy-to-learn-and-start-using that doesn't have hollow sounding VST's (strings in particular).

I have the program acid which allows for use of VSTs but its pretty cumbersome. If you have any suggestions I'm all ears!

Re: Film Scoring thread

For Mac, logic pro or garageband would be your best option. GB is free and Logic is in the £100-150 price range. They are easy to use and work particularly well on the mac os interface. The upgrade from GB to logic will be easy because of their similar features.

For PC, I use Cubase elements, hoping to upgrade to the full version. I do not have the luck of owning a mac 'powerhouse', so I decide to stick with PC because of their much cheaper price range. Other software's would be ableton live, reaper and pro tools; which I have all had a limited amount of experience with. I suggest you learn how to use the software you've got already, and once you have developed your knowledge of computer music, switch over to a more advanced software. It doesn't really matter which software or hardware you use, it depends on how good of a composer you are or could become.

This is very true.
I personally use a Korg synth-keyboard, coupled with the use of a Blue Snowball microphone. While this leaves a ton of room for error, it also provides room for artistic flare. You aren't bound by the computer's need for rhythmic precision. It allows for musical freedom which you would not otherwise be afforded. I take the various parts and layer them together i Audacity.
