Topic: Brickfilm of the Week: VIRUS (July 17, 2015)

This week’s Brickfilm of the Week is VIRUS by Fred Mangan.

VIRUS is a unique brickfilm focusing on brick-built robot characters who live inside a computer. It was made in 2011 and has remained little-known within the brickfilm community.

SPOILERY DISCUSSION BELOW!

I discovered this film recently, although it appears a handful of other people from the community had seen it back in 2011 when it was originally posted online. The use of live action and framing the LEGO-built world within the inside world of a computer was a neat idea to me, and one of those rare instances where the medium suits the story well.

Thoughts on the film? Have you ever tried to make a brickfilm without minifigs?

I remember watching this about a year ago. The scale and not using minifigs were surprising to me, and the colors of this film, for some reason are very appealing to me.

Quite an impressive film.

I find it interesting that the Viruses are the good guys and the computer is the bad guy.

Amazing work!

Set design, character design, character movements - all top notch.

I especially appreciate the departure from the traditional minifig based animations that currently dominate the landscape.

That was awesome, I love seeing the old classics, but it's cool to see these more modern and lesser known videos.  Thanks for keeping this up every week.

Re: Brickfilm of the Week: VIRUS (July 17, 2015)

I didn't realize this was so unknown, I believe I found it when it was still new and I was still digging through YouTube to find every good brickfilm and brickfilmer I could. The idea of a brickfilm without minifigs was pretty new to me, and certainly broadened my ideas about what is possible in the medium. I"m yet to make one, but I still plan on making a brickfilm without minifigs eventually. The animation in VIRUS isn't always perfect, but it's certainly good enough to reinvigorate my desire to try some more creative animation.

I love minimalist stories, I found the characters, the universe and the style in general to be very engaging.

That part where the yellow robot gets dismantled is pretty sad. Which is good! The build up before it made the event work.

The robots earned my sympathy and I was drawn in for the whole thing. Very good short film :-)

At last! A Brickfilm of the week that I've actually seen before! I stumbled upon this one before I even began brickfilming myself and found it to be quite inspiring.

Great film and really an original plot with a surprising point of view to it. mini/eek
