Topic: Rating

You should make it so you can rerate stuff.

I do not brickfilm anymore, but you can see my live action stuff here.

Re: Rating

Would make sense in light of the occasional accidental ratings that occur.

For what it's worth, we're generally focusing on minor bug fixes at this point. But I am taking down notes on all the feature requests for future use. Once the documentary is finished, I want to focus on rebuilding this site completely.

Rebuilding the site?  Will there be posts describing sneak previews on what kind of changes to expect?

Re: Rating

It's pretty far away at this point, too busy with the documentary right now. The intention is to streamline a lot of things and add some new features, but preserve the general concept (and most of the content) of the current site. We'll probably release some information like that once we're actively working on it, but I don't expect that until late 2015 at the earliest.

I just wanted to let people know because we have admittedly stopped even trying to add new functionality to this site for some time. The documentary has been my main focus for the past year, but we're trying to develop the community as well with increased focus on new contests, front page updates, etc.

I want to go ahead here and raise a minor issue that happens to me a bunch:

Many, many times, when I log on to the main page, I try to type my username into the username bar, however, it does not always delete the word "username" and then I end up typing "usernamesquid" rather than just "squid" and I have to make an attempt to log in again after that.

Besides that one small thing, I'm really happy with this site and I find its design, layout, and look in general to be very pleasing.  Every time I visit any other internet forum, I'm always disappointed that it doesn't look as clean and neat as this one.

I've noticed this, too. I always have to remember to backspace the "username" before I can begin typing mine.

Re: Rating

I'm constantly accidentally rating things too low when I try to do it on my phone. My own clumsiness is to blame, but it would be nice to be able to re-rate things.

Can't say I've had that username issue here, but I have it all the time on DA, so I feel your pain guys.

I, actually, haven't ever noticed this, as, I usually log in from the "forums" link at the top of that page (and all pages within the forum, actually... look, it's up there right now). But, I tried logging out and back in on the main page, and sure enough, it does keep username sometimes.

That may just be a case of the website's speed - as, I've noticed that if I give the homepage a while to load first, I never have this problem. You may just be clicking to log in too quickly, but, if the site will be redesigned, this loading problem could probably be tinkered around with..

When I originally read this, I thought you were talking about how your views on a film can change over time, and you wished you could have re-rated it differently to reflect your changed opinion...

Either way, I think there should be a limit to the number of times you can rerate videos. As it is, some people try to abuse the rating system to downvote competition, and promote their friends. Re-rating would give them a chance to redeem themselves later, but, at the same time, could make this problem worse... Just something to think about.

Re: Rating

The way to do it would be to give 12 hours from the original rating, that would give folks plenty of time to fix a mis-click but shouldn't incur to much abuse, it wouldn't be to hard from a code stand point.

Although if you really mis-rated something badly an administrator can.delete your rating.

Re: Rating

That's a pretty sound and fool-proof idea, Sloth. I'd love to see this implemented in the future.

Re: Rating

I feel like it'd be better to give the people to change their mind at any time...similar to the Netflix rating system. Sometimes one's opinion of a film changes in time.

However, I've considered one caveat: making all your given film ratings publicly viewable on your profile. I feel this is reasonable because you shouldn't really be giving a rating you're not willing to stand by. But I'm certainly not decided on it.

Squid, I have that login bug too. Stuff like that probably won't be terribly relevant as, most likely, the rebuild would involve creating an almost entirely new site (albeit one that functions similarly). So it wouldn't have the same bugs as the current site. It might, perhaps, have some new ones, until they get sorted out.

Re: Rating

With the username issue, my best guess is that it is an error on how your device is reading the webpage. Also, having not seen the coding for this forum, I'm also guessing that the login function is a third party feature that has been put onto the website using HTML. To make and manage complex things like an entire login system would cost a lot of money in server use and maintenance. Money that I suspect the owners of this site dont have the money for.

Re: Rating

The problem is actually that we use Javascript to do the placeholder text because at the time the site was written, HTML5 and the placeholder attribute weren't a thing. I can't be bothered to look over that script but I'm reasonably confident that's where the bug is.
