The Zoom H1

A great, portable microphone that records stereo audio. It allows for plugging external microphones into its 3.5mm jack to record with. It also has an output so you may listen to the audio recording live or for better listening to previously recorded audio. It works nicely for voice acting as the quality is crisp or it can be used to record audio for live action work, plugging directly into your camera's audio input or recording seperately and syncing in post-production. Can be connected to your computer with USB or 3.5mm audio cable.

Personally, I use the Blue Snowball Microphone (the model with the switch on the back). I like it, it's the best mic I have used so far. It's USB only though, which isn't helpful for any other recording besides the computer (but that isn't a problem for me). The only thing I dislike about it is that it's hard to make your voice sound right on it, because setting 1 (which is supposed to be for voice) muffles too much, setting 2 is for music and doesn't sound too good, and setting 3 (which is what I use it on) seems to be a bit too sensitive, picking up a lot of background noise.

I am using an Audio-Technica AT875R Shotgun Mic, I use it with this weird old Alesis ProTrack recorder that records to my old iPod Classic, I need a field recorder because my computer sounds like a whirlwind. However I find even the quietest of desktop computers have a fan whir that microphones pick up, once I nailed my recording environment down I haven't needed to use any post processing to remove background hum, you can hear an example of un-doctored voices here.

Sometimes I borrow a Shure KSM32 from a friend for even better quality.

I use the normal Blue Yeti as well. It's nice to have gain control and different operating modes, though I pretty much only use cathode. I've had some problems with audio quality in the past, but I think that they've been due to poor playback on my laptops' sound cards, since the problem was different on each computer, and other people haven't experienced issues with my videos. I now just leave my headphones plugged into the Yeti and everything I listen too sounds much better; so the sound card in the Yeti is better than the one in my expensive laptop. Basically the Yeti is a great mic and I would recommend it.

Hah, because I don't have a computer on while recording I will have voice actors read from a PDF on my phone, or if I can borrow a tablet from my room mate I will use that, I really should get a printer.

Hey I have a question I would really like to upgrade my mic (I have just been using the one on my computer   ). And Im wondering about if I do live action would it be best to get one that could also plug into my camera, or get separate mic's, and if I get one for all do you guys have any suggestions? Also do you guys think the Blue Yeti is worth the extra money over the snowball? And are there other brands that have better mic's?

Thanks guys! Right now Im looking at the Zoom H1 because it looks like I can record outside sounds and use it for live action. Is that true does it actually perform good in those situations or is it only really good as a studio mic? Also for you guys that record a lot of audio would you ever go outside to get that nice sound?

We have an H1 and it's great, it has a line in, a headphone jack and all the setting and buttons I can think of needing, and it's (relatively) cheep, and can also be used as a USB mic/audio input.
I have used it to record the voiceover on a coming production, plus musical instruments, people talking etc...
there are two things to pay attention to though, it is very sensitive to wind so if your recording anywhere with moving air you will need a 'Dead Cat' for it, and because it's mics are small and light it does not have a very large dynamic range so if you want to go from whispering to shouting wile holding it in font of your face you would need a hand-held mic with a heavier pickup.  but as long as your a reasonable distance (a foot or so) from what your recording it works great.
   For what it is and the price I have no complaints.
