Topic: Microphones

What microphone do you use for brickfilming purposes? Do you like it? Any further thoughts on the matter?

I'm currently working with a Blue Yeti Pro. I like the Blue microphones generally because they are USB-based and so the quality of one's sound card isn't what determines the quality of the recording you can get. I bought the pro model because I do some live action work and thought the XLR capability might come in handy. I've had it for two years now and have yet to use the XLR input, perhaps because the microphone is too heavy and clunky and limited in its range for most live action uses.

Re: Microphones

The Zoom H1

A great, portable microphone that records stereo audio. It allows for plugging external microphones into its 3.5mm jack to record with. It also has an output so you may listen to the audio recording live or for better listening to previously recorded audio. It works nicely for voice acting as the quality is crisp or it can be used to record audio for live action work, plugging directly into your camera's audio input or recording seperately and syncing in post-production. Can be connected to your computer with USB or 3.5mm audio cable.

Re: Microphones

I have the standard Blue Yeti and it works a treat. The most annoying about it is the knobs on the back of it are awful. They require far too much effort to turn and feel 10 times cheaper than the rest of the mic.

Re: Microphones

Personally, I use the Blue Snowball Microphone (the model with the switch on the back). I like it, it's the best mic I have used so far. It's USB only though, which isn't helpful for any other recording besides the computer (but that isn't a problem for me). The only thing I dislike about it is that it's hard to make your voice sound right on it, because setting 1 (which is supposed to be for voice) muffles too much, setting 2 is for music and doesn't sound too good, and setting 3 (which is what I use it on) seems to be a bit too sensitive, picking up a lot of background noise.

Re: Microphones

So, I might as well just copy/paste everything Rio just said.
Blue Snowball, great mic, and that's about it.

Although Audacity is pretty good about removing the all background noises, so that isn't too big of an issue.

Re: Microphones

I am using an Audio-Technica AT875R Shotgun Mic, I use it with this weird old Alesis ProTrack recorder that records to my old iPod Classic, I need a field recorder because my computer sounds like a whirlwind. However I find even the quietest of desktop computers have a fan whir that microphones pick up, once I nailed my recording environment down I haven't needed to use any post processing to remove background hum, you can hear an example of un-doctored voices here.

Sometimes I borrow a Shure KSM32 from a friend for even better quality.

Re: Microphones

I use a Blue Snowball iCE (the one with only one setting). Got it refurbished for about $40. I've only had it for about a week and a half and haven't really had a chance to use it for anything, but I'm liking it so far. It's leagues better than my MacBook Pro mic, anyway.

Re: Microphones

I use the normal Blue Yeti as well. It's nice to have gain control and different operating modes, though I pretty much only use cathode. I've had some problems with audio quality in the past, but I think that they've been due to poor playback on my laptops' sound cards, since the problem was different on each computer, and other people haven't experienced issues with my videos. I now just leave my headphones plugged into the Yeti and everything I listen too sounds much better; so the sound card in the Yeti is better than the one in my expensive laptop. Basically the Yeti is a great mic and I would recommend it.

Sloth wins for strangest recording setup.

Not in a bad way, of course.

Re: Microphones

Hah, because I don't have a computer on while recording I will have voice actors read from a PDF on my phone, or if I can borrow a tablet from my room mate I will use that, I really should get a printer.

Re: Microphones

I use an Audio Technica ATR2500 USB Cardiod Condenser Microphone. (I bought it for less than $100)
It comes with a USB cord that is long enough that I can have it on a tall microphone stand. I bought a pop filter from best buy for ten bucks. As shown with the blue background.
I use Sony Acid Music Studio for my music editing and audio recording.

Re: Microphones

Hey I have a question I would really like to upgrade my mic (I have just been using the one on my computer mini/eek  ). And Im wondering about if I do live action would it be best to get one that could also plug into my camera, or get separate mic's, and if I get one for all do you guys have any suggestions? Also do you guys think the Blue Yeti is worth the extra money over the snowball? And are there other brands that have better mic's?

Thanks a ton!

Re: Microphones

I use a Toner condenser Microphone. I bought it at the reduced price of $18.72. As some of you have pointed out in the past, my audio quality isn't the best (Lego The Transfiguration, for example), but I am currently working on improving my audio quality without buying a new one. I've been watching tutorials on YouTube about positioning and using condensers, and I am hopeful that my audio quality will improve.

Re: Microphones

I just use my phone and an app called all that recorder (lite). It works okay

I do not brickfilm anymore, but you can see my live action stuff here.

Re: Microphones

Your audio quality is pretty good, Smocktopus. Is that app free?

Re: Microphones

Thanks guys! Right now Im looking at the Zoom H1 because it looks like I can record outside sounds and use it for live action. Is that true does it actually perform good in those situations or is it only really good as a studio mic? Also for you guys that record a lot of audio would you ever go outside to get that nice sound?

Thanks a ton

Re: Microphones

I never have done that and I'm not sure if I will. My mic is only good for close up things. I'm not sure if I would be able to record what I wanted.

Re: Microphones

We have an H1 and it's great, it has a line in, a headphone jack and all the setting and buttons I can think of needing, and it's (relatively) cheep, and can also be used as a USB mic/audio input.
I have used it to record the voiceover on a coming production, plus musical instruments, people talking etc...
there are two things to pay attention to though, it is very sensitive to wind so if your recording anywhere with moving air you will need a 'Dead Cat' for it, and because it's mics are small and light it does not have a very large dynamic range so if you want to go from whispering to shouting wile holding it in font of your face you would need a hand-held mic with a heavier pickup.  but as long as your a reasonable distance (a foot or so) from what your recording it works great.
For what it is and the price I have no complaints.

Hope this helps,
