Topic: Digital Alarm Clock

Does anyone know how I can create a digital alarm clock effect? I have a digital font installed, but how do I create the glow-ish effect? I've added a glow effect in my image editor, but I can't seem to get it to look just right. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Re: Digital Alarm Clock

Maybe you could include a picture? That may help.

Usually when I want to create a glow effect, I just duplicate the non-glow layer (in this case, the numbers) and add a blur to them and put the blur layer underneath the numbers.

Here's what I got. I guess it's not terrible, but I just think it could look a little more realistic. What does anyone else think?

I think it looks good.

Re: Digital Alarm Clock

I did this in Holding Our Own 1.

I use an older program called Corel PhotoPaint 7, part of CorelDraw 7.
If you can get a copy of this, I use the Drop Shadow effect:

Make a mask of the digits
turn mask to object
Perform four drop shadows, one in each direction, with offset 0 and feather 3 or so, in the same color as the digits
Perform four more, one in each direction, with offset 1 and feather 0, in black, or whatever the background color is

When compositing into the film, make it about 20 to 25% transparent (75 to 80% opaque), to let a bit of the background seep in, so it doesn't look so high-contrast that it's obviously an effect.  This should help you with your concerns that you want it to be more realistic.

Another method is to make a copy of the digits to the clipboard, do a gaussian blur on the original, then superimpose the clipboard copy as a new object.  Still do the black drop shadow, or before pasting the digits from the clipboard, make an object out of the gaussian blurred image underneath and make it 50% transparent so it's a more subtle glow.

Re: Digital Alarm Clock

What I did in my latest THAC Film was a black on white clock with the quad warp effect.

EDIT: Forgot to add that with black on white I didn't have to worry about lighting. It seemed to fit in naturally.

Re: Digital Alarm Clock

Thanks very much for your suggestions and feedback. I'll look into Corel PhotoPaint 7 and tweak what I have.

Re: Digital Alarm Clock

Corel is not on x6 or x7 by now.  I use x6 also but sometimes older is better.
