I have been experimenting with different styles of doing titles and credits.
Here, you can see one such experiment, with hand-animated words.

If you used it for the title card at the end of a intro I think it could work well. Not for credits though.
Not bad. Very smooth. What programs did you use? Also a suggestion for handdrawn titles:

This tutorial explains it pretty well. Basically, if you have a whiteboard you can use it for titles. Even a piece of paper can work. Just take a picture of it and overlay it onto your footage in an editing software. Hope this helps. Just another option in case you want to try it.
Sir Snorlax, I appreciate the suggestion. I agree, I think it will work better just for the titles and not the credits.
Brick Block, thanks for the useful link. I might try some of those techniques.
I did the effect using GIMP. I have this neat tablet-laptop thingy that comes with a pen you can draw on the screen with, which I used to write the words out. Then I imported the picture with the words into GIMP and erased the text bit by bit (using a blank version as a background plate), saving each version separately. Once the words were gone, I played the imported the frames into an editing program and played it backwards.
