Topic: A Beginner's Guide To Brickfilming

I had this idea earlier today about making a Brickfilming guide for beginners since one has never been made. Yes there are tutorials for Brickfilming like Fancy Pants's which are quite good, but don't cover everything. I am thinking of an all in one guide: From lighting, set building, filming, and everything in between. One of the best guides: The LEGO Animation Book (Which I have read) By David Pagano and Pickett is quite informative, however, I am thinking of something more in depth, since the book didn't cover thing's like what movements to use for what FPS, nuisances beginners might come across, and so on. I believe a video would be best for the guide. It's most practical. If anyone is interested in this idea, please let me know so we can make this a reality.

Re: A Beginner's Guide To Brickfilming

For what it's worth, Pagano and Pickett's book was the work of professionals working for years to create a highly polished and relatively thorough guide. I think you'd have a hard time matching that and then expanding on it even further with a few hobbyists crowdsourcing a guide online. But that doesn't mean there isn't a place for smaller guides and tutorials about areas people are interested in improving in.

Re: A Beginner's Guide To Brickfilming

I think the scope and audience of the guide is important to figure out for a project like this. Pagano and Pickett's book is an excellent primer for the beginning brickfilmer. You mentioned wanting to go a little more in depth on things, so maybe it's not really a beginner's guide you have in mind. In which case, coming up with the advanced guide to all aspects of brickfilming could be a daunting tassk. Maybe focus on a single topic and go way in depth on it. And eventually make a series of guides.

Or how about a brickfilmer magazine, I'm sure there are a few members here who wouldn't mind writing a regular column on a particular topic. And there could be interviews of different brickfilmers, picking their brains on their techniques and inspiration, maybe a comics page?

Both very good ideas that I agree with. I have also actually been thinking that it would be cool to do one myself, but I have not done one yet nor mentioned the idea because I do not feel that I personally am experienced/good enough to be able to make one, but if you do want to make a brickfilm tutorial, then like thistof said it would probably be best to focus on one single topic, perhaps the topic you are interested in the most or the area that you feel you you do the best.

I have a free guide also, as I had no experience when I began and learned so much from others that I wrote the guide to give back to the BiM community. https://app.box.com/s/lovv0zlxhe2z10stsjsm  The more the merrier I say... I'd like to see your guide out there.  And the magazine!

I was just reading an article last night about improving your animation, although it can be applied to any life skill. It said the thing you need to focus on is the thing you're worst at. So maybe figure out what you totally don't know how to do, research it, do a lot of practice, and then come up with a guide. They say the best way to learn something is to teach it.

Thisof, about the accordion music...

I've been posting my catalog of music on the Tinnitis Bandcamp page a little at a time.  Sadly, the accordion songs on the "Rock & Polka" album are all covers of other artists, and it violates Bandcamp rules to post them without permission, which is why only "Ferris Wheel" is the only cover on bandcamp.  But all is not lost.  The year I had the accordian, I also recorded this pre-Tinnitis song playing it, and it's a total original.  It's called "The Big Toenail Polka":

I thought I had one of my "Rock & Polka" songs, "Foxy Lady", by Jimi Hendrix, stored on my Box account.  I was wrong.  But there are a few Tinnitis covers there without accordian, you may or may not be interested in them.

The Elements, but Tom Lherer.  Yes, it's from memory.

A Circuit Like me, by The Metronomes (the Australian 80s new wave band, not the 60s Jazz band).  Guest vocalist is BiM's own Mary Charles (Brick7):

The model, by Kraftwerk.  I recorded this several times, including for string quartet, and once at a piano recital in college:

Haha, thanks for indulging. Was that elements song from Animaniacs?
I wonder what other obscure hobbies our fellow brickfilmers indulge in....

A true and interesting statement, ssomething I had not considered. That may be a better idea!

That's a good guess.  The Elements is from Tom Lehrer, a math professor from Harvard, who wrote songs for PBS' Electric Company, and did a short run of performing his own music.  It wasn't long before he realized that wasn't the life for him and he returned to a more private existence.  I wasn't as successful memorizing "Yakko's World" from Animaniacs, though I'm pretty good at singing verse 1.

Also, see the "Drawings and other art" thread for a look into other brickfilmers' creative hobbies. As for me, I always liked making stuff, be it music, art, or anything creative.  I also like toy history, Transformers (I collect), playing and designing board games, 1980s pop culture, classic video games, ham radio, sci-fi, and assorted other areas of obscuriana.  And inventing new words, like "obscuriana".  What do you like, Thistof?

Re: A Beginner's Guide To Brickfilming

Ham radio! That's about as arcane as it gets! I'm into music, writing music, teaching piano part time, and programming synthesizer patches, as well as dabbling with programming games and arduino, 3d Printing, and other DIY projects such as a home built laser etcher/cutter that I need to get back to tinkering into better working condition. Currently working on a MIDI pedal for quick alternate tuning for my Rock Band 3 Fender Mustang Midi Guitar. I started sculpting masks last year, put that on hold after the first couple, it was getting expensive and time consuming, and I got distracted when I started really getting into brickfilming.... I also started an Oral Storytelling meetup group in my local area, we have 4 or 5 people average at our meetings every other week.
