Topic: Isolation - Production Thread

Hello one and all! And welcome to the Production Thread for "Isolation", a lego horror short. In this thread I'll try and post updates as often as possible.

-

I used to be pretty active on this forum a few years ago (read four), but I haven't had the time to do any brickfilming for the past four years after moving etc. I used to work on a large project called "Vengeance", although I doubt anyone remembers that project. I planned the film to be a huge steampunk-esque epic with an approximated 70mins of runtime. The project ended up being way to big for me though, at least for the time. I wasn't really up to the challenge, and I'm sorry to say I probably won't finish it. At least not in its current state. I'd also like to take the opportunity to thank and apologise to each and every one of you who helped out with the voice acting. I'm sorry I won't be able to finish it, and I'm sorry I never let you know what happened.

ANYHOW. Back to the current project. So what is "Isolation"? Well, It's a horror-thriller short, set in an isolated cabin way out in the woods. Our protagonist currently lives there by himself. One night, the power inexplicably goes out, and strange things start to happen. Something dark lurks in the corners, but is it real or just in his imagination?

Basically, I wanted to try make a lego horror film. I haven't seen many before, so I think it'll be a nice challenge. This project is estimated to end up at around 15 minutes. I'm only dealing with one location though, and mostly only one character, which should speed up animation at least a bit I hope.

Animation has not started yet, but I plan to start shooting within a week. The script and sets are basically done, and I've organised a shot list for the entire scipt, although I'm looking to borrow a better objective for my camera before I start shooting. One with better macro-capabilities. I'll probably set up a casting call soon as well.

Meanwhile, I did some quick mock-up test shots just today to get a rough idea of the finished product. The framing is a bit off, and the lighting isn't optimal, but eh. Good enough for a test. More pictures of the interior of the cabin will follow soon!

Re: Isolation - Production Thread

I loved "Vengeance", yet I must admit that this project looks all the more interesting to me! Great stills. I'm not super into horror (unless you count the old universal horror films & some of the hammer stuff - both of which I'm a fan of), but I'd make an exception for this! Can't wait to hear more. mini/smile

Great stills, the atmosphere and detail has a lot of texture to it. I can feel the humidity and almost smell the place. Looking forward to this!

Here's just a quick update showing some of the interior of the cabin which the entire film takes place in.

Overview of the layout of the cabin. Lounge/livingroom to the bottom left. Bathroom top left. Hallway center. Bedroom top right. Kitchen bottom right. You can also clearly see that I haven't done much detailing on the back yard yet, partly because I'll never film there, and partly because I've run out of foliage bricks mini/confused

It's a bit tricky to get the camera in there, but I'll remove some of the walls and such for most of the shots when I actually start animating. The set will hopefully look a bit better from those angles as well, but these pictures should at least give you a general idea of how it all looks =P

And if anyone's interested, I've set up a casting call:

Cheers!

Re: Isolation - Production Thread

Production has finally started!

I've decided to split up the shooting to focus on one part of the set at a time to minimize the times I'll need to tear out the walls for shots. I'm also starting by animating some of the easier shots, which is why I decided to start with all the exterior shots. So far I've completed three shots out of the 26 total exterior shots (although most of the ones left are way shorter and easier to animate).

I've only done some minor color correction on this one, but only to get a feel for the finished product. I'll do all the actual grading and such when I have all the shots.

And in case you missed it, there's a casting call up if you want to help out with voicing one of the characters! All help and every audition is greatly appreciated mini/smile

Re: Isolation - Production Thread

After a bit of a  hiatus, I'm back on track with this project again. I recently got a new job AND moved to a new apartment, so I haven't really had the time to work on this these past few weeks. I'm not quite as busy now though, so I managed to animate a couple of more shots. I've decided to shoot one location/room at a time, starting with the easier ones and then gradually making my way to the tricky shots at the end of the shoot. Right now, I've finished shooting all of the exterior shots as well as all but one shot of the bathroom. This should amount to roughly 3 minutes of the finished film, so shooting is probably about 20% complete! mini/smile

All of the stills below have been quickly edited to get a feel for the final thing, but it's really all just to test it out. All the real grading will be done during the editing process. My camera can't really get to close to the figs though, so I'll have to frame a lot of the interior and close ups shots during the editing as well =/

Some of the exterior shots:

And some of the bathroom shots (Without re-framing):

This is (roughly) how I plan to frame the two bathroom shots. Unfortunately the resolution does get worse as I zoom in, but hopefully it will still be watchable =P

I have also decided to give the role of Luke to Blandeer! Welcome aboard! mini/bigsmile This does mean that the casting call is pretty much closed, but thank you everyone who auditioned!

Coming up, I'll animate the final shot of the bathroom, and then I'll move on to shooting everything set in the bedroom.

Cheers!

I'm glad you like it! Hopefuly with some proper colour grading it'll be even better looking mini/smile

Thank you! Since everything takes place in this one location, I figured I'd have to put some extra effort in the set. Had this spanned 10+ sets and locations I'm not sure if it would be reasonable to make everything as detailed as this.

Despite what my recent activity might suggest, this project is not dead yet! But I've been really busy the entire winter, so I haven't had any time left for brickfilming. Things are looking up now though, and I've actually managed to shoot some more. The plan is to at least be done with the filming by the end of summer, and then have the fall reserved for post production (but we'll see =P)

I've now moved on to shooting all the shots in the bedroom set. Only two scenes are set in the bedroom though, and I've managed to finish shooting the first (slightly shorter) scene already.

Some of the bedroom shots:

https://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u497/SurfSmurf778/11.1%20Screen%20Shot_zpsvklgmykb.png

https://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u497/SurfSmurf778/11.2%20Screen%20Shot_zpsdyqfrpy9.png

So coming up, I'll start shooting the second scene set in the bedroom, and then shoot some shorter pick up shots also set in the bedroom.

Cheers!
