Re: Isolation - Production Thread

Really happy to see this project moving forward. Can’t wait to see it once it’s done! mini/bigsmile

Wow! Thank you! I'm glad to hear it! I do really prefer actual camera movement (even though it's a bit of a pain to animate), but I also find that complementing the real camera movement with a digital one is sometimes even better. Especially if it's two separate types of movements. So a real pan with the camera can be combined with a slight digital push in, sort of like what I'm going for with this one! Makes it easier to animate as well if you just focus on one movement mini/tongue

Thanks! And yeah, I'm a bit surprised my self. I'm animating more now per day than I think I've ever done before!

Update time! I've finished shooting all the scenes in the kitchen (except for the climax, but I'll shoot that last as I mentioned). I've now moved on to the scenes in the lounge, and I've come about halfways through them. I've now shot almost 75% of all the shots, I'm just a couple of shots short. This also means that I only have about 15 shots left before I start shooting the climax mini/eek

The lights are out for most of the film to get that spoooooky feeling, but two scenes are shot with the lights on (both of them set in the lounge), so I changed my lighting set up a bit to get that juicy look of several lights reflecting in the windows etc. I only used a cheap light strand for this (I think it's just from IKEA, but it works great!).

Some shots (without re-framing) with the lights on:

And another shot from the past week in darkness for comparison:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49707364016_da28ecd1cd_k.jpg

I've also just started editing, and I'd say I have a reaaaaally rough cut of like half the film. I do this mostly to get a feel for the flow, and to see if I need to do any pick ups or reshoots. So far, I've added two more shots to the shot list. One shot needs to be re done completely, and another one needs to be added to cover up some flaws in another shot. I'm editing with Da vinci resolve, which I've never used before, but oh my I LOVE IT! Super easy to use, very professional, and completely free, which is insane.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49706824898_4d8b46892c_b.jpg

So coming up, I'll finish the last 15 shots and then move on to shooting the climax.

Cheers!

Re: Isolation - Production Thread

Mini-Update ohoy!

Things are still moving along really smoothly, and I've now actually started shooting the climax. I don't want to spoil it all for you though, so I probably won't show many stills for the coming updates.

I will show you this one though! Sort of a teaser for the climax if you will. A look at the main "monster"/"adversary" of the film. POSSIBLY a big part of the climax, but who knows...

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49740439711_d352484161_k.jpg

Can't really make out that shape, shadow thing in the background? Good. That's the plan.

The idea is for the monster to be a "Mara", which is a creature from nordic/swedish folklore. A creature that allegedly sits on your chest and strangles you in your sleep. Hence the name Mara, derived from Mardröm (Nightmare in swedish). I did do my own interpretation of the folklore though, so in case you're a swedish-folklore-purist you have been warned =P

But anyway, that's it for now!

Cheers!

Thank you! I did spend quite a while building the set. I figured since the entire film takes place in the same location I should but some effort into making sure it looks nice!

Haha yeah, well hopefully the end product can deliver =P

Update time! I'm still shooting the climax of the film, but things are also still moving along quite smoothly, so half the climax has already been shot. This means that roughly 90% of the film is shot, depending on how you count. So if all goes according to plan, I'll be completely done with the shooting by next update.

I will show you some frames as usual, but I don't want to spoil anything, like I mentioned in the previous post. So I'll just give you this one frame for now, to keep the mystery going =P

Re: Isolation - Production Thread

IT'S A WRAP!!!

Yes, shooting is COMPLETELY done! I also had to shoot a couple of pick ups, but they're all finished now as well. My shotlist is all checked off (a very satisfying sight indeed).

Some (hopefully not too spoilery) shots:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49884017953_1274c0b958_k.jpg

And finally, the last frame i shot for this project, this being one of those pick ups I mentioned earlier:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49884852572_2d33a67ce2_k.jpg

So what now? Well updates will probably be a lot different from now on, but I'll try and find some interesting stuff to show anyway. I do plan on being qutie thorough with my post production and sound editing, so I'll give you some insight in to that process.

First off though, I'll have to finish a rough cut for the entire film before I can start writing music and recording sound effects etc. Right now, the film sits at about 14 minutes and 13 seconds, but that is without the last scene which I haven't edited yet. But the finished cut should hit the 15 minute mark pretty spot on (excluding credits).

Cheers!

These frames look great! I especially like the roof shot with the clouds and the moon. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for the finished film.

is that stuffing you used for the clouds?

Glad to hear it! And yes, I used colored wool for clouds, and just held them up with a lego contraption just off screen. Really cheap and easy!

Thank you! I spent forever framing that specific shot. The printed background I used for the sky was a bit small, so I had to frame it very carefully to make the most out of it =/ I'll probably try and print out a bigger one for future projects!

Hey this is my first time seeing this thread (yeah I know I’m a zoomer lol), but wow this is an impressive effort.
Consider me interested.

Update time!

The cut is basically done, but I've realised that one shot has a bit too much light flicker, so I'll have to animate a little bit more to cover that up. The entire shot wasn't ruined, so as long as I animate another shot I can cut between them. Shouldn't take too long either!

I've also finished writing most of the music (arguably the part I was most looking forward to =P). I still haven't mastered the music, and I still need to record the solo instruments; some solo vocals and some solo nyckelharpa. But a quick taste of the music can be found here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gtq8vs1 … e=youtu.be

And for those of you not familiar with the swedish folk instrument of nyckelharpa, here's a video of it in action:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3sxNL84gZY

I'm mixing and recording the music in Cubase, using libraries from EastWest Sounds as well as "Orchestral Essentials". Highly recommend all of those libraries for any composers out there! For the "horror" stuff I mostly just layer different sounds to get the effect I want. A lot of the stuff I download from freesounds.org, but I've also recorded some stuff my self.

Not the most interesting pictures perhaps, but hopefully the music demo makes up for it mini/bigsmile So coming up, I'll record those solo instruments, and then start working on the sound mixing properly. So far I've only added a few sounds, but I do plan to record a lot of my own sounds and foley, so that'll take some time as well.

Cheers!

Re: Isolation - Production Thread

Update time!

One of the two solo instruments have been recorded for the soundtrack, and I'll record the other one later this week. Then I'll finish the final mix and master for the soundtrack, which shouldn't take too much time. Most of the heavy lifting has already been done.

I've also just started recording some of the foley for the film. Seeing as sound plays such a huge factor in horror movies, I've opted to do some quite extensive foley-work. So I'll be recording footsteps, clothes, breathing etc whilst playing the rough cut of the film on a laptop and then time the sounds to the movements onscreen (so yeah, basically like regular foley, just slightly more low budget =P). So in a way I'm almost treating the film as a live action one during this project, and recording a lot of sounds that would usually only make sense if it wasn't animated (like the sounds of the clothes for instance). My hope is that it'll make it more immersive, and possibly scarier if I do it correctly. Luckily I'm also getting the generous help of BiMs very own JonnDthunDer, who'll act as sort of a "Sound and Music Supervisor" and listen through all the sound mixing and give me feedback! mini/smile

Don't really have any exciting pictures for you, just this one of my humble low budget foley setup.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50062013047_f545d03aa8_k.jpg

So coming up, I'll keep recording some foley as well as the last solo instrument. I've started working on some short teaser/trailer as well, so hopefully that'll be done in a week or two!

Cheers!

I use a program called cubase for all the recording, mixing and mastering. All of the orchestral stuff is completely digital, so I record all the parts as midi. Cubase doesn’t really have any good digital instruments though, so I use a combination of the sound libraries from East West Studios and Orchestral Essentials. So the sound libraries basically just contain the digital instruments, and then I use Cubase for the recording.

For the horror-stuff I mostly layer different sound effects and audio files, sometimes altering them a bit first (like pitching them down, slow them down, etc). The two solo instruments (solo vocals and nyckelharpa) will be recorded for real, so won’t use a sound library for those.

Hopefully that answers your question! mini/smile

Oh hey, that's me!  Happy to be a part of it.
I love the realistic approach you're taking and the intentionality you're using when doing sound and music.  I look forward to continuing to see this progress!

Cool! I want to start making my own music so this will help!

Update time!

Just a quick update this time to let you know that the teaser trailer is finished a lot sooner than expected! A link to the trailer can be found here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikQFAllrQDM

The solo vocals for the soundtrack have been recorded (a sample can be heard in the trailer), and I've pretty much finished up the music completly now, but I might make a few more tweaks a bit down the line.

This means I only really have three things left to do:
- Record all the sound effects and foley
- Finish the sound mix
- Colourgrade the film

How long will it take? No idea, but I'm planning to have it done by the end of summer at least!

Cheers!

Re: Isolation - Production Thread

Update time!

The sound mix is pretty much finished, which means I've also recorded all of the foley and additional sound effects.

This leaves only the colourgrading left to to (and possibly some minor visual effects and fixes if I feel I have the time).

I've also decided to try my best to finish the film in time for the "Fright and Fear" summer contest. It's the perfect motivation I need to finish it all, and the theme for the contest was too much of a perfect coincidence not to participate (although I feel like quite the cheat for submitting a film I've worked on for 2ish years, but I assume this will be taken in account by the judges). Although I'll be out of town for about a week now during the latter half of august, so fingers crossed I can get it all done in time mini/eek

Once again, I don't really have any exciting pictures or stills. I did sit down to watcha new rough cut of the entire film and take notes just a about an hour ago though, which looked something like this:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50227031287_e38c92fbdd_k.jpg

Basically I wanted to listen to the sound mix with some proper speakers, and not just through the headphones I use while working on the film.

Cheers!
