Actually, half of those After Effects things are exacly from the Video Copilot Tutorials. Try to do your own thing and use those things as extra help.
yeah, video copilot is awesome, I did not just download the project file and put my footage on it, I just followed the tutorial and tried to make it different.

He's not God. He is, however, one of the greatest individuals I know of.
If you need an effect for whatever film/clip you're doing, think of an original idea, and work from techniques that have been used in tutorials on VC. You should probably check out Creative Cow, since they have a lot of great techniques and tricks. Or if you really just wanna try something that has something to do with the tutorial, create something similiar, but original, ie. HUD display tutorial could easily be followed as a hologramatic computer, or something like that.
Originality has a pretty large role in special effects and motion graphic design, I think Leo would be a pretty good example.
