Topic: A Brickfilmer's Guide to Making a Successful Contest

This thread is meant for people who want to make contests

So you want to make a good contest do you? Well I'll be nice enough to guide you through the steps.

What NOT to do

  • Make a short post just mentioning the deadline

  • Not giving ANY prizes/rewards at all (unless you're trying to do something like the animation challenge)

  • Giving subscribers/boxes/mentions for prizes

  • Not mentioning the Deadline

  • Spam mods to put your contest in the Contest Forum

  • Host a contest when a larger one like The Easter Contest is being held

  • Make conditions like you must be subscribed to enter

What TO do

  • Give clear instructions on what to do

  • Have reasonable prizes, like a webcam

  • If you don't have the money for prizes, get sponsored

  • Have people help you as judge/co-administrator

  • Have a solid deadline, that gives the people enough time to make the entry

  • Plan the thing, don't do it just before the holiday, since most people here will have exams

  • Add a logo or title to make it more official and professional

  • Post it into the 'General Film Discussion' sub-forum.

I'll now give a fictional example of a badly planned contest

Hi! This is the _____ contest and the deadline is on the 2nd of June. The prizes are: 1st prize: a box for 2 weeks. 2nd prize: 1 subscriber for 5 days. 3rd prize: 1 subscriber for 2 days. Please enter!!!!

As you can see that was horrible. So first we'll make it look better, and change all the information a bit

The rules:

  • Make an entry about ____

  • No excessive amounts of blood, gore or violence

  • Do not publicly release the video until the contest is over

The judges
Me,___ and ___ will judge this contest.

The deadline
Your entry must be entered before the 2nd of June.

Submissions
You must submit your entry either as a PM via Youtube to ___ or as a PM on BiM. Mediafire and Brickshelf are also allowed but not recommended.

The prizes
1st prize: A LEGO set of your choice worth 40 dollars.
2nd prize: A LEGO set of your choice worth 20 dollars.
3rd prize: A LEGO set of your choice worth 10 dollars

Additional information
If you have any questions please mail me at _____@_____.com

Feel Good Contests
You might want to make a contest in the form of the Animation Challenge (without prizes and just for fun). To do that I'd recommend to at least make a winner's list. Otherwise it's structured the same as a usual contest but without the prizes. However I'd not recommend hosting such contests, mainly because lots of people will find doing this without prizes a waste of their time and many attempts at hosting these contests have been unsuccessful.

As you can see that was much better. I hope this helps lots of people and be sure to give feedback so I can add things if need be.

Re: A Brickfilmer's Guide to Making a Successful Contest

Thank you, we've needed this

Hopefully, a mod will sticky this into the contests section, or perhaps add it to the beginner's guide.

I hope a mod does that too.

Really?! Thanks for the great feedback! Be sure to tell if something is missing!

Re: A Brickfilmer's Guide to Making a Successful Contest

What is the general sentiment about "feel-good" contests? Such as contests you enter for fun but don't have any prize?

Re: A Brickfilmer's Guide to Making a Successful Contest

I've updated the thread!

Re: A Brickfilmer's Guide to Making a Successful Contest

You should say something to the effect of hosting a contest in the middle of another one isn't recommend.
Because, well, it isn't. mini/eh
And maybe something about having a contest logo, as those make the contest look a lot more official. (Even if it's nothing more than a large font with different colors.)

But like the others said, this was long overdue, so thanks for taking the initiative and getting this out!

Thanks for your contribution mini/smile ! I added it to the post.

Re: A Brickfilmer's Guide to Making a Successful Contest

This is a good guide.

Thank you for making this. Hopefully it will make idiots stop posting pointless and awful contests.

Fixed it!

Re: A Brickfilmer's Guide to Making a Successful Contest

This is exactly what we needed.

I believe this deserves a 'sticky', to deter the creation of contests or challenges that have uninteresting prizes, or overlap with official contests.

I might do a good contest in the next few years mini/wink

Re: A Brickfilmer's Guide to Making a Successful Contest

Could a mod sticky this either in this forum or in the Guidelines forum? It is too good a resource to let pass to the depths of the old threads.

Re: A Brickfilmer's Guide to Making a Successful Contest

Yes, this is my question to mods; This thread has quite a few people saying you should sticky this. Is there some reason it's not happening? If so I'd be glad to hear it so I can improve it further.

Re: A Brickfilmer's Guide to Making a Successful Contest

Finally.

I hope we get less newbie contests now.
