Topic: Is it OK to use 2 minutes of audio from a DVD on youtube?

Does anyone know for sure if it is OK to use a couple minutes of audio from a DVD as part of a youtube video if say, it is on a brickflick?

Re: Is it OK to use 2 minutes of audio from a DVD on youtube?

It's okay as long as the video is not being monetized, I believe.

I just wonder if there is an amount of time that is ok to use even if you do monetize - what if you used a 5 second clip?

Doesn't matter how long the clip is. Probably best to just not use the clip.

Get educated.  Unless you're an educator or commentator making a point about a clip, no means no, especially if you're monetizing.

Also, is the clip in the background?  I used audio clips from season 6 of 24 in one for my animations, but chaacters talked over it.

Good question HoldingOurOwn - the thing is everyone seams to bend the rules on this and do it.

Bottom line: Use it, but don't expect it to be qualified for monetization unless you have permission.

Just because everyone does it doesn't mean they got away with it or got monetization for it.  Sooner or later, they'll get caught.

If you use under 30 seconds of it, YouTube won't touch it. I did that with one of my live-action vids, and I monetized it. I didn't get any strikes or warnings of any kind. Hope this helps. mini/smile

uh oh!

An important thing to remember if you choose to use copyrighted material is that just because the copyright owner doesn't take down the video straight away it doesn't mean your safe! They could suddenly decide to enforce their copyrighted material at any time, for example I had a LEGO music video that got taken down after being on YouTube for 4 years!

Nothing gets kept a secret forever - you'll always get caught in the end, ALWAYS.

One other thing... audio clips that are 10 seconds or shorter fall under the FAIR USE laws and may be used.  I actually made a music video with 150+ fair use music clips, called "The Complete History of Recorded Music, Part 1."  This is from my bad's latest album, "Dawkins vs The Monkey Shakespeare Simulator".  You can watch this video, which is completely legal, at the link below:

Oh, and anyone who can name ALL THESE SONGS gets Holding Our Own DVDs and Tinnitis albums for life!
