Re: Show Us Your Behind the Scenes Pictures and Videos!

I got my ordered tripod mount accessory in the post today.

For a while, I've been thinking that having my tripod inverted on the table will make it easier to move the camera around the set than using it the conventional way on the floor next to the table. Trouble is, that mounting a camera directly to the standard tripod mount will make your pictures turn out upside down if you're using a DSLR. This accessory fixes that by mounting the camera via the hot/cold shoe instead of underneath. The seller tells me it will support anywhere up to 2kg in weight, and so far my camera is being supported really well.

It will fit any standard tripod and any camera with a hot/cold shoe (up to 2kg). You can find it for sale here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/171124476075 … 1439.l2649

Here's a behind the scenes photo of my newest Brickfilm. I just began filming today, so my desk is fairly clean. mini/lol

A thread like this would be best suited for the Production thread.

Have you seen a big-chinned boy?

Yeah, probably should be. Can a mod please move it?

My feeling is that this thread could encompass aspects of pre-production and post-production as well and thus is more suited to this forum, though I'll admit the boundaries between forums is often blurry.

Re: Show Us Your Behind the Scenes Pictures and Videos!

Hey Wammy, welcome to BiM, it's always nice to see new people here. Just so you know, we have a thread just dedicated to sets here: http://www.bricksinmotion.com/forums/to … ue-thread/ , where your last post would be more at home, since it's really showing off the set specifically, as opposed to other aspects of behind the scenes. That thread is also a great place to get feedback on sets that you're still working on. Also, if your post is still the most recent one on a thread, and you have something else you want to say, just add it to your last post instead of making a new one. That's just how we do things here, to avoid spamming, I think, and it seems to bother some people. Also, what camera is that that your using to shoot? Does it have full manual control? I noticed you're using it in program mode, which is not ideal for animation. Anyway, welcome to the community. mini/smile

Re: Show Us Your Behind the Scenes Pictures and Videos!

The camera I'm using is a Canon Powershot SX500 IS.  I don't quite understand what you mean by "Full manual control".  mini/confused
Anyway, thanks for the information and thanks for welcoming me to the community! mini/smile

Re: Show Us Your Behind the Scenes Pictures and Videos!

@Wammy Do you use another lamp to fill in dark shadows? Your sets might be dark without a fill light.

Backyardlegos is right, without using Full Manual, the camera will have to adjust the focus, white balance, and exposure on every frame, which can cause for not-so-great looking videos. I'm not sure what kind of camera that is though, so it might not have a manual mode.

Re: Show Us Your Behind the Scenes Pictures and Videos!

Your camera does in fact have manual control, meaning you set the shutter speed and aperture yourself, and they stay constant, as opposed to the camera changing them every frame. It doesn't seem to have manual focus, which is a problem, if you don't know what I'm talking about you should look up how cameras work, it's important stuff to know when making stop motion animations.

Re: Show Us Your Behind the Scenes Pictures and Videos!

Automatic focus is a killer sadly.  mini/sad  Nice forest.  I'm creating a similar scene myself - but more deserty.

backyardlegos - Actually, it does have manual focus.  I had to use it a lot when Wylus McBurpen (the cook) was not in the center of the picture.  It wouldn't focus then.  I normally use the Macro focus feature when making my videos.  Cooking with Wrylus McBurpen is actually the first full video that I made with this camera, so I guess I'm not really used to all of its features.

rioforce - From what I know, this is the only desk lamp I have.  I think there might be another one somewhere.  I always thought one lamp would be enough.

togfox - Thanks!  I might adjust the forest a little before I start filming though.

Re: Show Us Your Behind the Scenes Pictures and Videos!

Actually, it's best to have 3 lamps (See Three-point Lighting), but most people get away with 2.

It would also be good to stress that while 3 point lighting can be helpful in a lot of filming situations, it is by no means an all purpose lighting setup. The whole point of film lighting is to reflect the mood of a scene, and as such you should really try to experiment with different lighting setups to reflect those moods. While the standard 3 point lighting can work great, experimenting with new things, like in all other arts, can really enhance your work and give you a unique flair, as opposed to looking the same/indistinguishable from your contemporaries.

Re: Show Us Your Behind the Scenes Pictures and Videos!

Yeah, 3-point lighting is not simply the best but I guess it could work in some situations.  Personally, I've never even ever used it.

I usually use a setup where my lamps are pointed directly up at the ceiling to make one great big splotch of light.  Sometimes I use only one lamp, but I point it as so the shape of the white spot is more or less around about the same just only half as bright.  I use only one if I want  to make lights on set seem more bright.
Having it all shined at that large patch of ceiling makes all of the light come from basically one place but it goes about very evenly on the sets and makes all of the shadows really, really soft like an overcast day.

That's my basic lighting setup, but it's mot what I use all the time for every shot.

Even though I posted for the first time in years late last year, I'm planning on making a more permanent return to brickfilming now. I got myself some new equipment and a new setup for animating. I have shelves of records where I used to animate, so I just stuck a light on one of the shelves and wheel a table in when I want to make a video. Yes, I only use one light because I'm mad. Also shown here is my really simple Lego camera dolly, something I have never tried before.

I'm glad to see you return. mini/smile The big advantages to webcams is easy camera movement and their small size, and man that is a compact setup, sheesh.

That is a great dolly track. I never thought of using lego train tracks for a dolly, but it makes perfect sense. It could also be scaled up for a dslr I assume.
