Topic: How should I export my videos?

I'm using Sony Vegas to edit my films, and I'm wondering - what would be the best way to export my videos? Right now I usually do .wmv, which looks just fine. A friend suggested that I try MP4 for good compression, but when I do that it darkens the video (I read about this in another thread). What would you guys suggest? Right now I'm happy exporting wmv files, but I'm mostly wondering if there is a better option.

Thanks!

mp4 in most cases is better than wmv. I almost always use MP4, but occasionally will do avi (which for me is uncompressed, im using Media Encoder).

Re: How should I export my videos?

I don't know why I have issues with MP4 but I do, I export using wmv's with a dual pass at a bit rate of 10-15mb/sec, it makes insanely large files but they seem to work well when I upload them to YouTube and Vimeo.

Re: How should I export my videos?

I like mp4, myself.  A lot of times, I render for wmv for posting to video sites.  Try a few tests; loop about 30 seconds of your film and render various formats, with different settings within each format. Like any stage of brickfioming, the final render is one that takes some practice, and the skill is acquired by doing.

Re: How should I export my videos?

144p 3GPs are the way to go.

I use mainly use MOVs, yet that leads to big file sizes. I'd use either that or an MP4. WMVs aren't such a good option as they aren't accepted everywhere and I believe the file is generally larger.

Re: How should I export my videos?

LASF, while not my preferred format, WMV, like mp3 audio, has variable compression rates, but surprisingly, the file size can be rather small for fairly low compression.

I have never had issues with mp4, so I use it. I render from Sony Movie Studio in the Sony mp4 codec. It works wonderfully.
