Topic: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

Hey guys, recently I've been learning and adapting some new effects one in particular is ''glowing''.

Now what I would like to know is, how can I track a glow effect I put on say a character or an object?

So when the camera moves instead of the glow effect to move to whatever its moved to while the camera makes motion, how do I keep it moving on an object I want it to stay on?

E.G; if it was on a minifig like pic below, how do I track it so it continues to stay on him while he moves?

Please help me out.

Sincerely,
Divine.

What I'd like to know is how you even get a glowing effect. Does it come with most stop motion softwares?

Re: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

I assume you could just track it with Mocha, as I believe Mocha does come with After Effects. If not, I suggest attempting to find another tracking software for free or doing it manually. Next time, I suggest you add two dots to the minifigures torso so that you can track two points in After Effects' built in motion tracker.

Re: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

@Sean, You can't rotoscope in my version, thats for AE5 +, if you know any alternatives for rotoscoping please share.

@William, Yes AE includes a glow effect. And no not with most.

LMD, When I attempting to track the glow effect and it did track successfully, however for some reason the actual glow effect doesn't show up even tho the glow effect has been chosen? Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? heres a photo.

You're thinking of the Rotobrush tool. And whilst it is a very handy tool to have, it only automates the rotoscoping process.

You'll get the best results by doing this the old fashioned way - by drawing a mask in the shape of the glowing area you want in each and every frame.

Re: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

Hi Sean, thank you for the response and yes I was referring to that!

Do you mean explaining to me very briefly how I am able to draw a mask in every frame? Do I need to keyframe every frame? It's not a bother its just a matter of understanding.

I only ask as when I mask the particular part I want to glow, when I go to the next frame it still stays in that spot, how do I move it from that spot to the next frame in order to continue the mask is what I'm wondering?

Please if you can help me out, I'd appreciate it a ton.
Just the basic concept of masking every frame, how to do it with above situation ^

Sincerely,
Divine.

1 minute of google searching later...

Re: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

Hi Sean, I appreciate the link to the youtube video, but alas it doesn't really help me the vid is 42 minutes based on a whole bunch of things in AE, I'm after 1 single thing. I'm more of descriptive person myself and understand better visually in this case a brief description would be more of assistance to me for my case.

Just a simple brief instruction break down would mean a lot.

E.g,

1. Open up a new composition,
2. Add in glow effect
3. Use the pen tool to mask the part you want to glow,
4. ?
5. ?
6. ?
7. ?
8. ?

Would really appreciate it.. Again if I knew what to search I'd search it up myself I've looked to youtube for some answers but don't know what to write specifically for this. Please just a simple break down would be very helpful.

EDIT:
I've attempted to keyframe it through the mask path but it doesn't follow it as I track it with the keyframes, I really am confused.

Re: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

How about a 10 minute video? I can't help with step by step instructions because I always rotoscope manually when I do things like this.

Edit: First problem I see is that you seem to be applying the glow to your footage. I think it needs to be on a separate layer - adjustment or solid.

Thanks OldScratch just been watching it and it seems to be good for this! I'll try it out tomorrow, and if theres any issues I'll post back here mini/smile

Is Rotoscoping a easy alternative than to mask each frame?

Divine.

Re: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

Rotoscoping is masking each frame. Motion tracking is easier if your footage is designed for it. If it isn't, you can end up with a lot of weird wobble that you have to fix frame by frame anyway.

Re: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

0ldscratch to the rescue once again.

"Masking each frame" sound to me like just about exactly what Rotoscoping is.

Re: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

@Oldscratch/Sean,

I have tried to follow the video through, tho I don't have the option to choose mocha from AE? Which means I can't really do anything from the video, is there an alternative for After Effects CS4?

As in whats another to mask without the use of rotoscraping?

Divine.

Re: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

Don't use Mocha. Just use an adjustment layer with the effect you want applied to it (or even a solid set to screen/add, however you want to handle that part) and use the pen tool, keyframing the path each frame and moving the points t match the shape you're following.

Re: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

Ah, again I have misunderstood.

Re: How do you track a glow effect on AE? Please help!

@Sean Thank you! That makes a lot more sense, and I understand exactly what you are referring to now. When I get a chance I will attempt it as you've said, if theres any issues I'll report back. The main issue was trying to do all of it with mocha. Thank you for your post!

@LMD do not fray my friend, you have helped quite a bit along the way I think Seans answer is exactly what I am looking for when I get a chance I will attempt it.

Sincerely,
Divine.
