Topic: What video editing software do you recommend?

So, just to make it clear, in case you didn't know, my stop motion software is great. I've been using the same stop motion software since I began animating and don't need to change that. The problem is that I don't have a decent video editing software.

Up until 2015, I used to animate on a windows 7, which came with Windows Live movie maker freely installed on the computer. When that computer died, I started working on a Windows 8, which doesn't have Movie maker installed. I really didn't like movie maker, and didn't think it was worth paying for, so I decided to go without it.

My stop motion software can import video files onto a project, which means from then on, I've been using my stop motion software for editing my videos as well. The trouble is that it isn't capable in doing a lot of the things that a proper video editing software is capable in doing. It gets the job done, but it takes eons.

So, basically, it's a good stop motion software, but I really need to stop using it as a video editing software as well.

Is there any good video editing software you would recommend? preferably cheap, as I'm on a budget? Thanks in advance mini/smile

Re: What video editing software do you recommend?

Blender has a full on editing software built in. It is completely free, and someone has made a whole guide on using it for that purpose.

Re: What video editing software do you recommend?

Hitfilm 4 express is a free editing software. I've never used it but I've heard it's very powerful. You could also get Windows Movie Maker back onto Windows 8 if you really want to, and it's completely free with a download right on Microsoft's website. Other than that, Adobe Premiere Elements 14 is what we used to use, and it is a really good deal for $70 (basically Premiere Pro without the bells and whistles). I hope that helps!

Re: What video editing software do you recommend?

If you want Movie Maker, you can download the old Windows Vista version here:

Or you can find a download of Windows Live Essentials that includes the weird Windows Movie Maker that Windows 7 introduced. You needn't pay for it.

However, if your computer supports it, go for Hitfilm Express or DaVinci Resolve. I've not use Hitfilm, but I hear it's great. Resolve may require more processing power, so I don't know if it's able to be used on average computers, but you can try it.

As for Blender.... it's editor is super basic. Basically all it can do is line up clips and audio and export. I wouldn't use it extensively unless all you want is basic clip arrangement.

If you pay for one, go for Premiere Elements or Vegas Movie Studio (either the newest version or 12 Platinum, which I use).

Re: What video editing software do you recommend?

Sounds like, from what you all are saying, that Hitfilm 4 is a pretty good bet. I've heard good things about (I'm pretty sure Filmriot use it?) but wasn't sure it was free. I'm going to have a while of not animating anything, so I might as well experiment while I have the time.

Re: What video editing software do you recommend?

You should surely try HitFilm 4 Express. It is very powerful.
Film Riot's latest short was made in collaboration with HitFilm. There are thousands of tutorials on Hitfilm's youtube channel.
Definitely take look if you are looking for something powerful but also free

Re: What video editing software do you recommend?

Downloaded Hitfilm last night. Been spending most of today experimenting with what I can do. Very impressed so far. Thank you all for recommending it!

Re: What video editing software do you recommend?

I was playing around with Hitfilm and I realized by right clicking the high lighted area shown in the photo bellow you can change it to display the video frame by frame.

Not sure it works in HitFilm, but it's worth a try (works in Premiere, After Effects, etc). You can write "+17" and it make you jump 17 frames later. (+1:15, etc. should also work).
It can be useful sometimes.

Re: What video editing software do you recommend?

For me, the playback is slow anyway. Most of the time it seems as though it is playing one frame a second mini/lol  Other than that, though, it works really. It was nice spending a free weekend on experimenting on what I could do with this really incredible software. I look forward to using it properly when I animate my next film!
