The Dark Knight - Chance

Youtube (HD)
Quicktime (9 MB)

This is a clip from the climax of The Dark Knight, when Two-Face is talking to Batman and Gordon. I’ve wanted to recreate something from TDK for a while, and this scene seemed like a good one, given that there isn’t much of a set and it has Two-Face.

Update: Here is a making-of article about the clip.

w00t, love it.  Yet, despite having watched the movie more times than I have Star Wars, I can't remember if those shots match shot for shot.

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

I think the general editing layout is matched, though the digital camera wiggle might have been a bit overdone.

Other than that, fantastic stuff. How'd you manage to get the burnt half of Two-Face's face to match up with the fig head?

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

Ya, I pretty much have no idea how you did 80% of what I just saw but it looked dang good mini/yes

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

As a huge The Dark Knight-fan, I absolutely loved it. You captured the style and the colours very well, the animation was extremely smooth and the mouth animations were great as well. Stunning work, man!

EDIT: Oh, and I would love to see some making-of stuff on this. Any chance?

Animation and lighting are great, nice job.

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

I would love to second the motion of a "making-of" film.

Well done, Nick. Nice montage clip.

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

Damn, I can't see this very smoothly at all on my computer, when I get to another computer that can handle HD I'll watch it again. From what I can see I love how you lit the shot, though I think we should have been able to see Batman a bit better, and have him not so in the shadows. Great FX!

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

Just compared it to the actual Dark Knight scene and it is very good, matching shot for shot.

And I believe the scarred face was a darkening mask (because I can see some flickering near the top stud of the head).

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

Thanks for the feedback everyone. mini/smile

You would be correct in that assessment, Lech. I put a mask on an adjustment layer, then painfully matched it to his head movement in every frame. Fortunately this made moving the face quite easy, since there was a line I could use to position it.

I'm currently working on some making-of stuff, though it could be some time before it's out since I'm redesigning my site.

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

Nice.  The facial animation was quite impressive, this was very dark but I can't remember if the real thing had more detail in the shadows or not.

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

This is my favorite scene from the Dark Knight. Great job. The mouth animation and effects were pulled off really well. The set seemed a bit too dark. I couldn't really see much. And the animation was very impressive. Well done. mini/smile

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

i'm just impressed by the quality of facial animation. It looks like sth done with computer, but does perfectly fits the head movements. I just wonder how you did that. It's very impressive.

That was good. Not that im being picky, but dents hair couldve been wavey instead of long.

Don't be fooled, my avatar is a facade of conformity.

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

The FX were great aswell as matching the shots. Amazing clip!

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

I've written a short article about the making of the clip, which should hopefully answer all the questions I've been getting.

Re: The Dark Knight - Chance (Updated!)

Nice, those kinds of articles are fun to read.  The thought of cutting a LEGO piece in half is discomforting but then I did paint probably a hundred pieces or more for my current project.
