Kieran, I would probity shoot that at f11, f8 would be the bare minimum.

I'm hoping to film with it - maybe. I like the bokeh, so f1.8 is a regular in my photography. I might try focus stacking if I use extension tubes with a low f number.

Re: Photography

Jayem, I like the exo suit lightning. The contrast between light and shadows creates a lot of volume.

Thanks! I really enjoy experimenting with lighting like this. Normally I just use my phone, with a colour screen app or the flash turned on.

@Jayem Very nice photos! I like the one with the Wolverine especially. The color of the background on the Exo-Suit is kind of strange, I guess because it's so dark. It's sort of in the middle, though, it's not completely dark, yet it's not completely lit either.

Cheers.

Also a question regarding Flickr: how do you guys build up followers and interest in your photos? I'm not looking for fame or anything, but it would be nice to upload a picture and get some feedback and stuff.

Re: Photography

In response Jayem on getting followers on flickr, I would join a few groups that have many members on it, groups that are popular usually have a good bit of people viewing the latest additions to that group. Over time I built up a decent amount of followers (140) and I do get a bit of feedback here and there.

Re: Photography

Alright, thanks for the advice. Groups for stuff like Lego photography or more/less specific than that?

Re: Photography

I joined a few photography groups, then I joined groups that were more specific to my photos, such as Star Wars groups, Halo groups etc

Re: Photography

Not sure if this is the most fitting topic, but here goes.  I have recently acquired a DSLR plus extension tubes and a 50mm f/1.8 lens, so I've been shooting quite a few test pictures, pretty much all of which involve ridiculous amounts of over-the-top Bokeh.

Manual focus is just so incredible.  I can already think of hundreds of ways of using this.  I genuinely don't know how I managed to brickfilm without it up until now.

The depth of focus on this thing is ridiculous.

However, it seems I got too much of a good thing, seeing as the F-stop is too low and the depth of focus too shallow to be practical for most shots.  I ended up with shots like this, which just look ludicrous.

The extension tubes I use are the really cheap ones that don't have an electronic connection between the lens and camera body, so the aperture is automatically set to f/1.8 and I can't adjust it.  I didn't think it would be a problem, but it looks as though I'll have to return these and get a pair that allow me to adjust the aperture.

I really enjoy the knees in the L shot

ohhh, you don't have an old 50mm lens you have a cheaper more modern lens that does not have an aperture ring, I thought you had an old Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 which everyone who is in the documentary used to film there talking head segment for the Kickstarter video. If you are using a Canon lens with your camera you will have to expose your shots longer to avoid some flickering so you might have to invest in ND filters (spending money the primary joys of DSLRs)

Re: Photography

Those pictures look super, FlyingMinifig. I enjoy the knees in the last shot as well. Also, I just wanted to mention that you are definitely one of my favorite brickfilmers and I look forward to your future work.

Re: Photography

Thanks!  I'm definitely not the first one to use this leg technique (I'm pretty sure I first saw it years ago on The Brothers Brick, or some such place).  Though as far as I know I'm the first attempt to use it to emulate L's typical sitting position, haha.  (I actually just happened to have him him lying around, and decided to randomly use him as a test subject.)

Hmm, is there any specific reason why you should use a long exposure?  I'm aware that automatic lenses can cause flicker because the aperture is automatically adjusted but I thought this could be switched to manual to avoid that.  Using a long exposure plus filters seems a bit of a complicated solution to me, to be honest.

Thanks! mini/smile  I'm really happy you enjoy my work, I'll try not to disappoint. mini/tongue  I do have some amazing stuff planned (well, it seems amazing in my head, whether it ends up being amazing in reality is another question...)

You should make a brickfilm that looks like those stills, Jayem!

Re: Photography

Thanks. I'd love to film at that high a quality, but annoyingly the camera I use (a Panasonic G3, with a Raynox 150 macro lens) doesn't do live output or remote capture... perhaps I will give filming without a laptop a go.

Re: Photography

It is annoying to me how Sony and Panasonic haven't offered good support for stop motion. I'm still holding on to a Canon 50D because of it, even though I own a Gh4.
