So, in my upcoming film, there's a scene where the main characters are in the crater of a volcano. Now, I'm not sure what to use for the lava as I have quite a few, yet not enough flat red pieces to cover the whole thing, so I tried flat red pieces with normal sized ones, but it just doesn't look right. I also though about maybe using clay or even clay combined with red bricks. Any thoughts?
I don't think you should use clay. I hate seeing clay in brickfilms. If you don't have enough plates, you could make a wall of red and put it sideways to make a flat plain of red. Then you could put some stuff on top like some small black plates and trans orange stuff, and give it some sort of animation.
Hmm, not quite sure I like the idea of putting a red wall sideways, seems a bit strange to me... anything else?
Use CGI.
Any kind of transparent yellow, orange or red bricks mixed with smaller black bricks all loose in a pit, with back lighting.
If you can't do back lighting, I'd suggest doing the same but with opaque (normal) bricks.
Believe it or not, they look far brighter than non-lit transparent ones.
But do not fear, I may return to it one day.You mean just a mix of red, yellow, orange and small black pieces?

That's just your opinion. Just because you don't like clay in brickfilms, that does not mean that it won't work.
Well, if I had to give my advise, I'd do what Bricky said (And it seems like you're taking his advise). Just to add to it, though, I'd create a brownish sort of background, because even though the inside of a volcano is dark, it's still colored brown, so you should try to create one that way (If you want to, of course).

It doesn't look like lava to me. Well, that's just what I think. I think studs just doesn't look like liquid. Studs are more solid-looking to me.
I think Squirlz Water reflections has an option where you can change the color of the water. Make it orange or red and light the scene with an orange-ish tinge. (Orange tissue paper over a lamp works surprisingly well).
Thanks. I know what I'm going to do for the lighting (a few days ago I ordered some lighting gels off amazon), and as for squirlz, for this film I want the lava to be as "real" as possible,.
Okay, maybe, you could make something like a rocky ditch, and put some red and trans oranges bricks in there, and maybe a few black pieces, not attached or anything, then just push it along to make it flow like a river.

You can just make lava in GIMP or Photoshop.I use GIMP.I'll show you some pictures of (fake) lava when i'm done.
Google lava,download any picture,and then edit the volcano picture.There,you have lava.
Well, I actually want to make the lava with bricks or maybe clay or cloth, basically I want the lava effect to be in-shot, not added in post-production. Thanks anyway.
I'd find a peace of green material, cut it into whatever shape you're going for, and chroma key it with a picture of lava.
If you DON'T have the resources though, then I think that the clay would look best. Although I'd use that as a last resort. To me, at least, that stuffs impossible to clean off of the bricks.
