Topic: Thumbs Up Suggestion

Hey,
Before I get into details, I just want all of you to know that this is a suggestion I am throwing out into the blue. It's an idea I had not that long ago.

After many occurrences, I have agreed with many posts made on this site, but I just feel that posting a reply with a simple agreement seems a bit pointless. So what if there was a simple rating system (unlike the one we had)? The difference is that this rating system rates the post, not the user's reputation. Also, you can only dislike if you've already liked. There can't be negatives. Here is a quick representation:

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

So make the discussion board like a comment stream on Youtube and Facebook?

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

I like it.

EDIT: I would thumbs up your post right now if I could...

In a way, yes. It seems to be the most common rating system to work effectively, since major websites use it as well. The difference would be that you cannot dislike something, unlike youtube. (Unless you have already liked the post)

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

By that you mean if you dislike it it will go back to normal right?

Well to be honest I do not think it is needed. They have tried it in the past and it just doesn't work as intended in my opinion moderators should be able to give you something like a award for writhing a good post. Like a trophy sort of thing at the end of the post symbolizing a job well done.

Personally, I think it's a fantastic idea!

This is different. mini/tongue

Personally, I like the idea. The reason I didn't like the old system was reputation points, I felt bad for everypony who was so negative.
I've kinda thought something of this sort would be nice, so long as you don't get the whole "my lega vidias r teh best THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE!!!" type business.

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

I agree. Thumbs upping helpful posts would not give a rep, but would indicate the members who are more helpful.

Yes, this is what happened. Not eager to revisit it, the people of this community proved that by and large, they weren't mature enough to handle it. I guess what you're proposing is slightly different, more like a facebook like, but I'm not sure I see what purpose it serves with the features removed.

(And honestly such a thing might be beyond my ability to create, anyway)

Was the formal version the one with the reputation meter, or was there a previous attempt I didn't catch up on?

Anyways, this was just a small idea. I'm not entirely sure if suggestions for a rating system were still being allowed in, or even if the thought of a system was even still standing.

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

It was the reputation meter one. It allowed people to up or downvote posts individually, which did accumulate to create a reputation rating for the user overall. The problem was there wasn't a way to disable the overall reputation meter, so people abused the system out of a desire to get reputations up or down. I could reinstate it without the down-rating option, but I dunno if that's worthwhile or not.

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

Oh lord. Looks like BiM is turning into the brickfilming Facebook.
Plus, with me being a n00b when the rep meter was around, I had the lowest rep on the site. -70 something.
I actually like this rating system though.

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

Yeah, it seems like the site is fine without a rating system, and it has been. I guess there really was no purpose for me to bring this sort of thing back up.

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

Of course, if there's a need to stay relevant with current trends (like 50-something-year-old news anchors bumping their twitter accounts), then social media is the way to go, such as the Like system.

But isn't a discussion board social by itself?  Should it evolve to something more?

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

The problem with things like these is that it can quickly get out of hand. People like/dislike without thinking and the entire thing goes up in smoke. Not to say it wasn't a good idea, but it just didn't work out or suit our needs.

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

I think that we simply need to set some norms. This system was in effect when NXT's Viva la Vida video was released, and he got like fifty likes on each post of his after that. I also know it to be true that Trodoon, even though he did make some mistakes, was getting constant dislikes because some people found him annoying. A friend of mine also joined this website around that time and got some dislikes because he was lazy with grammer. Should you get likes for a helpful criticism or solution, or for a question that you were wondering about too? Should the topic for a really great video get a whole lot of likes? I feel that the big reason why your rating system didn't work out was because you didn't set guidelines early on.

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

I'm echoing others here, but while I like the idea, the last implementation showed that it simply caused more drama and pathos among the community.

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

I Think that this is a good improvement from the last system we experimented with. The two flaws I found with the old system was the existence of a downvote and the fact that anyone could use the system. As Smeagol has pointed out, not all of the users are mature enough to use a system like this. That's why I think that if another upvote/downvote system gets implemented, we should have an age/maturity/experience restriction on the system.

Re: Thumbs Up Suggestion

Or alternatively there is the threat of removing your ability to upvote if you misuse it.
