Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

Yeah man, no copyrighted music, shame on you for thinking that you could use it like IdidinTHACandnooneseemedtonotice.

Anyway, I've with probably my best idea ever for this, and it's freaking packed with symbolism, can't wait to get to work.

If memory serves correctly, I believe there was a little bit of a problem when one of the entries was taken down.

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

Huh. Don't remember that. I also used video game music in my BRAWL 2011 entry and Hazzat knew about that but didn't care. For some reason video game companies seem to care less about their music being used, no idea why.

Anyway, my idea's less comedy-based than usual, trying to go for something pretty deep really.

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

I just got back from vacation yesterday, I'm really looking forward to (hopefully) making an entry for this. mini/bigsmile

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

I may make an entry, but I'm having a hard time on what to do exactly.

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

This looks fantastic, Thanks for finally getting a sweet competition going. I will most likely try to enter this as soon as I am done with my current video. And I agree with Squid, recognition is the best prize. mini/wink

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

Just so you guys know, I made a topic in the production forum or where to post all of your production stills, sets, progress etc for the contest.

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

On the topic of copyright stuff, could using a copyrighted song in a brickfilm fall under "fair use" (whatever that may mean)?

I used video game music in my THAC.  It was an old game, so I hoped nobody would care, and they don't seem to anyway.

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

FlyingMonkey, not really, unless you were directly doing a parody/review of the song.

Yes, I too have used copyrighted music in THAC with no problem before, but this isn't THAC. mini/wink

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

THAC generally allows copyrighted music because the short deadline isn't really conductive to composing or finding a composer. As far as fair use laws go, they're actually much more nuanced than popular opinion would suggest. Regardless, my main reasoning behind restricting the use of copyrighted material is to encourage creativity within the community. Public domain and royalty free music is still an option if anyone isn't able to find a musician or create their own soundtrack.

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

Well, I want to use a particular song that would be perfectly suited for a certain scene in my film--would it be permissible to use it?

Also, just out of curiosity, since you say the main reason you're not allowing copyrighted music is creativity, would using royalty-free/public domain music negatively impact the film when it is judged?  Also, what is defined as "public domain" music?

Not unless you obtain the rights (or it was released with a non-restrictive license).

It would not negatively impact your results in the contest. It could be detrimental for the same reasons any other music would impact the score negatively (fits poorly, distractingly bad quality, etc...) but the judging wouldn't hold use of preexisting music itself against an entrant. What it boils down to is that I would prefer that everyone at least attempt to create/get someone else to create music for their film if they think it requires it, but I'm leaving the creative commons/public domain option open because I realize that not everyone is able to do that. I'm limiting preexisting music to works with non-restrictive licenses because I want to create some incentive toward trying to get your own music made- if everyone was able to use whatever existing high-quality professional music they could find, more people would opt for that to remain competitive than would create their own music. I'm hoping that this will level the playing field a bit in addition to encouraging creation.

The Wikipedia article gives a decent summary, and I believe the second link is accurate. Recorded music has to have been explicitly released with a public domain license. If you can record but aren't a composer and wished to use old compositions, some have passed into public domain so you could use the composition without violating the rules.

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

This is a great contest idea. I think we'll enter this, but since it overlaps with BRAWL it will be difficult to try and do both. Also we'll be starting late because my brother is on a missions trip.

Do peanut butter and jelly count?

There's some degree of contrast between peanut butter and jelly, sure. Personally I would struggle to come up with an interesting plot focusing on PB&J, but if you think you can, go for it.

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

This is a good theme, Squash. I hope people do interesting things with it.

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

I'm glad to hear that people are taking to the theme! I've just made two changes of note to the original post:

1. Site administrator Sméagol has joined the judging panel. I'm currently attempting to contact two other members who I believe would make wonderful judges and will update if anything comes of that.

2. The stakes have been raised! I've updated the 'Prizes' subsection to indicate that in addition to the respect and adoration of your fellow filmmakers, the first place winner will receive a $20 Amazon.com gift certificate code!

Finally, forum member jstudios has opened a separate thread to post production updates for planned entries here. Participation in that thread is completely optional, of course, but it could serve as a nice place to get feedback and/or size up the competition. I've browsed through the posts that have been made so far and I have to say that I'm excited to see the things you folks are coming up with.

Re: Contrast: An Unofficial Long Form Contest

I'm with Squash, obviously I want to win but I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone has to come up with and seeing the process in which the films are being made, to me that's the best part of contests like this and BRAWL.
